Ice Man to buy the Toon?
By NSG On Sun 19 Aug 2007 |
Rumours are circulating on the internet that Newcastle United could be subject to a sensational takeover attempt, merely months after Mike Ashley assumed control at NE1.
A well known source in Iceland posted the following article:
This has been translated by one of our readers, IceMag, as:
According to sources, Icelandic businessmen Pálmi Haraldsson and Jón Ãsgeir Jóhannesson are seriously considering launching a bid to the English football club Newcastle United. Negotiations have been going on for some time without any contracts having been signed.
Pálmi Haraldsson did not want to deny or confirm this story when Visir contacted him. “Newcastle is a great club, with a great manager and I have been a fan for a long time” said Pálmi and laughed.
Mike Ashley is a sports retailer in Britain and he bought the club in June. It isn’t unlikely that Ashley knows of Pálmi and Jón, for they have been very public in retailing in Brittain recently. Ashley bought his majoraty in Newcastle for 134 pounds in the end of May while Eggert Magnusson and Björólfur Guðmundsson bought West Ham United for 85 million pounds.
Last week Ashley paid off 30 million pounds of the 80 million pound debt that Newcastle had. This is considered to be a part in making the club easier to sell in the eyes of investers.
Newcastle is an immensly big club, the 13th biggest in the world today. It’s fans are very loyal to the club, and the club’s stadium, St. James’ Park, is sold out most matches.
Whether Ashley is tempted by a bumper offer remains to be seen, having made Chairman Chris Mort deny rumours in the past that Ashley is in the business for “quick money”. In all honesty, a few million profit on a football club is nowt. I hope nothing comes of this.
More as we get it.

This is exactly what we don’t want at Newcastle - we need stability and sense, rather than yet another tabloid circus story. The new owners seem rational and sensible, and I like the way they’re managing the club so far - reducing the debt, spending a bit on players, getting the money we deserve for the players we sell, and just being careful and sensible rather than trying to make ridiculous headlines all the time, or splashing out big money on average players (a la West Ham). In short, the team of Allardyce and Mort seems to be working - we’ve got a few good signings in (and there may be one or two more to come), now we need time for them to settle without ridiculous amounts of pressure and uncertainty.
A lot of posters seem to think it’s all about the money they spend on players - this is just rubbish. In the Shepherd era we spent a lot of money on players, and look where it got us. It’s not about Hollywood signings and staggering wads of cash, it’s about building slowly and carefully and sensibly, with a long-term plan in mind, rather than constant short-term changes of faces that get us nowhere. Stick with what we’ve got, in short, and stop getting so impatient that you’d welcome some more strangers through the door just because they’d be willing to spend money on players (which is an unknown regardless - no one knows how much they’d be willing to part with).

Now they are saying in the Icelandic media that according to bulletproof sources Jon Asgeir is not in the group to buy Newcastle, but only Palmi Haraldsson. And yes I believe he is a fan of Newcastle and not that interested to buy Manchester City.

To Pete, he (Jón Ãsgeir) was found not guilty of these corruption charges.

Yeah but Freddie Shepherd was a fan of Newcastle United, we have to remember that, but his business mind was crap. Ruined our club from the foundations. Ash and Mort are the best thing for United in that department and so is Sam Allardyce in his respective dept.

I’m not sure if it really makes all that much difference if the board changes but it would be if wholesale changes were made to the team management. Now that we’ve got probably the best English manager going who is building up his technical support staff and systems I’d be incredibly worried if he went because of a boardroom coup. So my take - not too bothered just so long as Sam and his team are retained. If the Icelanders are fans of the Toon then that’s an advantage. I wouldn’t class Mort or Ashley in that category - possibly a good business team but not fans. If the Icelanders fall into both categories then I’d be happy with that.

i hope nothing comes of it, we need stability at the club - not another circus season.

Well if you Google this guy Jon, Asgier, you’ll get his rep but you’ll also see this link:
https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4648259.stm
Its a BBC link saying this guy might be up on corruption charges, so NO CHANCE do we want him buying out beloved TOON!
Also, to answer someone’s question above, if Man City’s onwer gets time for Fraud, Man City will be relegated to the Championship, same as what happened to Juve in Serie A.
C’mon Ashley, please tell us this is NOT true!

I would be disturbed if we lost Chris Mort.

So how much would Ashley accept for the club, if he’s already rumoured to have turned down a deal that would have netted him an instant 20 million profit (which we’d all agree is hardly worth getting out of bed for)?
So, what would be better - an Ice Cool Icelander or invisible Ashley?
MAybe they’d prefer to go for someone like Man City who could be up for sale again very quickly.
If Man City’s new boss, Tahksin Shinawatra is extradited by Thailand on corruption charges and they freeze his assetts, what happens to City?

No they don´t make it into the 500 list as far as I know. The only Icelanders making it into that list are the guy who owns West Ham and his son.
But Jon Asgeir is bloody rich still and pretty powerful in British retail.
He owns Hamleys, Karen Millen, Goldsmiths, Mosiac fashion, House of Frasier, Julian Graves, Iceland, Woodward, Booker, MK one, Jane Norman, All Saints etc and that is only in retail in UK alone. Than he owns huge properties in Scandinavia and UK, flagship of Denmarks retail Magasin du Nord and ILLUM. He owns the second biggest newspaper in Denmark and owns endless properties and retail stores in Iceland.
Pálmi Haraldsson is pretty rich also.
