Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins scored impressive goals to seal Newcastle’s passage into the next round in what turned out to be a relatively comfortable night on Tyneside. New signings Cacapa and Enrique impressed, and confidence in the team must surely be rising.

Newcastle entertain Championship side Barnsley in the Carling Cup 2nd Round on Wednesday night as the Magpies look to set off in style in this season’s Domestic Cup competitions. Allardyce knows that this competition is the best chance of silverware for the club this season and will be all out to win this tie at St James.

The referee for tonight’s Carling Cup Second Round tie at St James’ Park will be Graham Salisbury of Lancashire. Salisbury is 44 years old and joined the National List in 2001. So far this season he has refereed 3 Football League games, and also took charge of Hartlepool’s 2-1 victory at Championship side Scunthorpe in Round 1 of this competition. In 4 games he has shown 13 yellow cards and 1 red.
