The Newcastle and Bolton saga continued on Monday night, as St James’ Park finally welcomed back second string football when United played the White Men in the first home game of the new season.

After a draw and a loss from the first two games of the season, United went into a match with the men from Eastlands stuck at the wrong end of the table. A 1-1 draw at home to Crewe was followed up by a disappointing 2-1 reverse at Stoke City. Although not considered a ‘must win’ match at such an early stage of the season, United certainly needed at least a point here to get a boost up the table and their season up and running properly.

Big Sam and his troops made the short journey down the A19 to face the Red and White “army” that awaited them at the Riverside stadium. So far unbeaten this season, Allardyce decided to stick with the same men that served him so well at Bolton, but played worse against Villa a week later. The fully fit Owen, Caçapa, Enrique and Ameobi were either left out of the 16 altogether or benched, with the midweek fixture against Barnsley firmly in the back of the mind of our well loved gaffer.

Rumours are circulating on the internet that Newcastle United could be subject to a sensational takeover attempt, merely months after Mike Ashley assumed control at NE1.

After a summer of transition from top to bottom at the club, with everyone but the ever popular Tea Lady seeming to have their position at the club under scrutiny, it was largely the same batch of youngsters who we grew to know the ins and outs of in a topsy turvy past twelve months at Little Benton. United, having a reputation as “Cup specialists” after two consecutive runs to the Youth Cup semi final, took on a gutsy Crewe side in the season opener.

Well, to be fair to the lads, we were always in the game until Team X scored their first goal. We had Y amount of players out injured and my boys gave their all. Sloppy individual errors cost us again. I’m afraid Lady Luck is against us and it’s stitched into the badge of Newcastle United.

Looking at the team sheets:

Nedved, Iaquinta, Trezeguet, Buffon, Zanetti.

Edgar, Troisi, Pattison, Barnett and Lough.

It’s a no contest, isn’t it? As everyone connected with Newcastle United know very well, football isn’t played on paper. Not the force they once were, but still regarded as European giants, the Old Lady came to town expecting to locals to roll over and fold to their superior skills.

A drab, boring affair was predicted by many for this Sky Live match. With Everton playing five across the middle, few expected it to be a riveting game, with a chant from the East Stand more likely than a goalmouth scramble. However, with both sets of backlines clearly off form, this proved to be an open, flowing game, as end to end as any in the modern era at Gallowgate.

A fine autumnal night in the North West brought our annual defeat at Anfield. A nervous, underperforming, Liverpool side were given a stern examination for thirty crucial second half minutes. However, United, despite having two stone wall penalty appeals turned down, could not find that lucky break and, I’m afraid, class shone through in a game that the hosts, in truth, bossed for long periods.

Rock solid defending, fantastic ball winning and distribution in the centre of the park, free flowing down the wings and pure strength, determination and down right quality up front. No, I’m not reporting on Chelsea Vs Liverpool, this was Newcastle United with one of their finest, most professional performances away from St James’ Park since the joys of the Robson era.

Oh my God! No multi million pound superstar, no “huge name” gamble, no 20,000 fan press conferences or “we’re gonna win the league”’s. Newcastle United are going to get relegated. Fact! Nailed On! Tbh!

After a tense but vital 2-1 win over an impressive Wigan side, I ran the rule over the fans, Referee, Glenn Roeder and a Newcastle United team already depleted in numbers.

A lot of uncomplimentary articles have been written in recent months about the so called “state of the game”. Modern football is said to be in decline, with “Russian Revolutions” and “Fat Cat Millionaires” spoiling the game we know and love.
