Having impressively overcome the daunting task of the second round group stages, Newcastle go on to face new foes in their quest for European glory. An unbeaten record so far in Europe, including seven victories and twelve goals, the Toon Army have every right to be feeling confident going into their Last 32 tie with Belgian minnows, Zulte Waregem.

Ahead of our trip to Bolton on Boxing Day, I took the opportunity to have a look at our Boxing Day record to give us an idea of how well our lads do on the day after Christmas. The fixture list has long been unkind to Newcastle, forcing us to play away from home effectively 2 out of every 3 years, 48 out of 79 Boxing Day games being on the road, and this is the case again in 2006, meaning 5 consecutive St Stephen’s Days on the road for United fans.

One of my favourite ever Newcastle players was Scott Sellars who gets in my Toon all-time XI ahead of the Ginola’s and Robert’s not just because he was a very good player in his short spell here at United but also because he was tremendous value for money. Which can’t be said for many Toon players past and present!

Glenn Roeder has criticised fixture congestion with the Toon playing 3 games in 6days. During the interview he made the following remarks - “we are competing in 4 competitions this year” and “We don’t have the size of squad required to be successful in those competitions”
