N-O Panel: Pre Match Arsenal (h)
By Jonny Hall On Tue 4 Dec 2007 |
Is this the end? The last-chance saloon? For many tabloids and journalists, Sam Allardyce has got this game to prove his worth. It’s make or break time as Newcastle host Arsenal at St James Park on Wednesday evening, live on Sky Sports 2. We got the panel’s view, as ever, on all things black and white.
Rich
“Arsenal currently sit 3 points clear at the top of the Premiership table (with a game in hand!), they have the best goal difference in the league, they have scored the most goals in the league and they have conceded very few - both home and away. Not exactly the sort of team you want to play when you’ve nearly got the worst recent form in the league, are they?
Thankfully, Derby are still more rubbish than us, while Wigan have the same record over the past five games. Not great reading, eh? Enough negativity, though, it’s time to eject some positive vibes into this piece. Arsenal’s talisman, the absurdly talented Francesc Fabregas misses out, as do the almost equally gifted Robin van Persie, Alex Hleb, Abou Diaby and Mathieu Flamini – all midfielders, bar the lad who has the Craig David remix to his name. I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a club with such a position-specific injury list almost as ridiculous as ours.
As well as that slice of fortune, Steven Taylor could be back to partner David Rozehnal in the centre of our defence, Stephen Carr is injured again (he did alright against Blackburn, actually) and we simply cannot be as bad as we were ten days ago here against Liverpool… can we!? …Nah man! Have some faith! Hopefully the atmosphere and the performance will be miles better than what we witnessed against the Merseysiders, but they seem to go hand-in-hand these days, unfortunately.
The visitors will be clear favourites for this one – something we’re growing more and more used to at St. James’ – but we’ve given them a rough ride here on numerous occasions in recent times with worse teams/managers than we have now, let’s put our hands together and pray that we do more than that come tomorrow night, because we absolutely need to. Optimism is the order of the day, because – and whisper this quietly – if Allardyce loses this game, then he becomes the first manager ever to lose 3 consecutive Premiership home games at this club. So, howay the lads!
Prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 Arsenal”

“So then, Arsenal. Great. Just the team you have to play when you’re looking for a win. I don’t hold out much hope for this. All I can really hope for is that we see some signs of improvement, but that will only come about if Allardyce starts using the correct tactics with players playing where they are comfortable. I can really see us on the end of a thrashing here. This could be painful.
I’ve made my views regarding Allardyce known by now. However, I’m not one for booing. Lets support the club and the players first and formost and get behind them. Booing won’t help them.
My prediction: Newcastle United 0-3 Arsenal”

“So….Arsenal come to St James Park. What’s going to happen? I don’t have the slightest clue. Newcastle are becoming a nightmare for journalists and pundits alike because it is becoming impossible to predict what is going to happen in a game that involves the Magpies.
It seems as though I’m saying this all the time, but we MUST play 4-4-2 and we MUST have Zoggy and Milner on the wings in order to stand a chance. Enough of playing players out of position and enough of the fancy tactics and formations, we really MUST go back to basics.
I think Allardyce knows this, well I hope he knows this and the Arsenal game could be his last chance. If I’m being honest, I don’t think it should be his last chance and if we lose to Arsenal, he should still be in charge for the Birmingham game. However, I do feel alot of the problems this season have been his fault.
Unlike with Roeder and Souness, you can actually see where Allardyce is getting it wrong. Strange substitutions, awkward tactics, strange formations, negative approaches - it’s not right, but if he makes the relevant changes, there’s no reason why he can’t get it right.
We have to go into games now, gunning for the victory; home or away. Hopefully we can start that on Wednesday night, in front of 52,000 supportive fans.
Prediction: Newcastle 3-2 Arsenal. Howay the Lads”
Join us later in the week for the Post-Match Arsenal reaction. Will Allardyce still be in charge? Who knows.

hello simon, i see you replied to my question. Obviuosly everybody’s allowed there own opinion, but i’m not sure if he has actually captained any other team. I also disagree with you about him being quality as he finds it hard to keep up with play and i am still waiting to see him take anyone on.
He seems to be spoiling what could potentially be a top quality midfield. With Milner right,Emre left, Butt and Barton central.
hope to hear a reply thankyou Paul.

well done to the lads for a battleing performance against the gooners. i thought it would be a very short sighted fan who thought that we would play good football under big sam, but the least we should ask is for total commitment, 100% fight and just a bit of quality and i think that is just what we recieved last night(at last). i hope that was evident to the boys who played last night, that if you put it in you will recieve back tenfold from the fans, who all to a man, hope and prey for success. thier is still a long way to go, however, that was an excellant nights work against a very good side so well done to all concerned and please carry it on to birmingham on saturday.

geremi is captain because he is a quality player and a great leader!

Why is Geremi captain. Oh and can anyone tell me what abilities he actually possesses to play in the championship never mind the premiership.

Granted boo boys dont help proceedings but ultimately the responsibility lies with the players and the manager, if they were working hard and competing win or lose they wouldnt be getting booed. Why doesnt young Edgar get a sniff, he marked Ronaldo out of the game on Jan 1st in his first home game. I saw him mark Mendieta and Gong Dook on his own a few weeks back and what a player, as good as any in the recent starting lineup and that includes Taylor !!

We’re renowned up and down the country for the support we show in the team and no matter what the outcome of the game is tonight you can guarantee that everyone of us will be backing the team come the weekend.
Lets just show the country that we are the best fans in the land and show our support for Big Sam. He was definately my first choice for the job in the summer and following recent selections i’ve had my doubts but at the end of the day if we’re all booing him come kick off it’s not going to help the lads on the pitch.
The liverpool fans held an organised march for Rafa before the champions league game last week, lets match them and get singing for Big Sam come kick off and be that 12th man and stick up 2 big fingers to the southern press because we all know we’re going to need it.

Well I hope it is not the end For Big Sam and I doubt it very much. Look Newcastle united fans need to get behind big Sam tomorrow, I know I will Show all the support everyone, I urge you all. We have aired our dissatisfaction in previous seasons where Roader and Souness are concerned and having done this and noticed, it did not improve our situation at all. So let us try something different. Huh what do you all say, even if we go down tomorrow to a mighty Arsenal side, we need to not leave the stadium before it is over and we must support our players and cheer them, this is the only way we can get out of this slump, not through boos and abuses.
The season began well and every player wanted to play, now with this low esteem many do not even want to run out for the black and white.
Come on guys lets do our bit!!!

So then once again the Southern Biased Media Hacks are sharpening their knives simply because the words crisis and Newcastle United seem to always go hand in hand with each other regardless of who is at the helm it always seems to be a
player revolt or an unhappy chairman seemingly hoping we lose the next match so he can wield the axe.Whichever way you read it they always seem to make out we are always lurching from disaster to disaster.
We know the truth however the Press will always inflate any crumbs they get from the Magpie Table into a three course meal.
Therefore what perfect way to stick a huge V sign to them will be a truly battling united performace tomorrow night and shoot down the “mighty gooners”
I think that what will happen as Big Sam will finally show his mettle - 2 -1 to the Toon and repeat of the support witnessed at Blackburn.
C’MON!!!

HI Geordie lads
Every season I wish Newcastle would win everything my Gunners dont. So many Ex Londoners are like me and have a affection for Newcastle, its a generation thing as I was weened on Milburn & Mitchell etc.
Well Wednesday you have a real chance to get something from us because as he says above, our whole midfield first & second squads are out injured. Mind you the way Arsene breeds them its just as likely that an unknown will star for us in their place?
Sadly, I think you have made yet another error in manager selection with the Walrus. his only way of stopping Arsenal was to hack and kick us into defeat……and worse still he is proud of it!
I would beg George Graham to take over with Stuart Pearce & Shearer to assist and learn ready to take the reigns. The problem you have always had is desperation to win something to soon after getting a new boss.
Hopefully your season will be a great success after this match.
I still think we will win 1-2
