Our first home game of the 2007/2008 season brings Celtic to St James on Thursday 26th July in a game which will possibly see several of this pre-seasons acquisitions step out on new their home turf. The fixture is likely to be a big affair with Sam and his new boys taking on the Scottish league and cup champions.

Celtic FC were formed in 1888 and have a rich history throughout Scottish national competition 41 league wins and 34 cup wins. European honours come in the form of a single European Champions Cup win in 1967 defeating Inter 2-1 to make history for the Scottish club. Their only consistent challenge to national honours has been Rangers - this has grown into one of the fiercest rivalries in the world.

Celtic are managed by Gordon Strachan who has carried them to glory despite a very disappointing start to his Celtic career with a record breaking 5-0 loss to Artmedia Bratislava denying them of European competition in the 2005/2006 season. The season ended in glory with a league and league cup double, much to the delight of the Celtic faithful.

Last season Celtic were easy winners in the league leaving the impotent Rangers chasing shadows. Hearts - who looked like early season rivals - committed hara-kiri with some extremely strange decisions both on and off the football field. Celtic defeated Manchester United in a shock result at Celtic Park carrying them into the last 16 losing 1-0 to the eventual winners A.C. Milan. Celtic completed their double with a 1-0 win in the Scottish Cup over Dunfermline Athletic with their January signing Perrier Doumbe grabbing an 84th minute tap in.

Looking to the upcoming season Celtic appear to be in a very strong position remaining strong favourites to retain the Scottish Premier League. Celtic have been active in the transfer window with the most interesting signing being Massimo Donati from A.C. Milan who replaces the outgoing Neil Lennon after 7 years of service. Celtic’s main opposition for the title is their ever present rivals Rangers who, under a new boss, pose a new challenge.

A side abreast with players from several nationalities, Celtic play an attacking brand of football based on a 4-4-2 system. They have several key players but their overall game is based on a good team ethic and desire to win. This friendly is likely to be a feisty affair and I can’t see Celtic rolling over and letting Sam’s boys have all the fun on his St James Park debut.

Brown was linked with several premiership clubs including Spurs, Boro and Everton before choosing to sign for Celtic saying Champions League Football was a major factor in his decision. Brown is a skilful midfielder with a high work rate and has shown himself to be a creative attacking presence. Brown has a total of three caps Scotland however he is expected to figure more prominently on the international stage if he continues to impress at the new level Celtic provides for him.

» Celtic’s Fanbase

Celtic have a wide and varied Fan base which provides an intense atmosphere with a loyal following and an ever present sold out ticket allocation. Here are Celtic Fans opinions on their fan base:

According to Aiden_McGeady of the TalkCeltic forum:

Well, 4 years ago we got an award from FIFA for being such great fans

Last year we showed great respect to the late Miklos Feher in our Champions League clash with Benfica, singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in Portuguese. We also raised funds in a great tribute to the man.

That act earned us many fans in his native Hungary, adding to our huge fanbase all over the world.

The atmosphere at Celtic Park, which holds 60,000 fans every week, is said to be the best there is along with Anfield.

I honestly thing the club has fantastic and well-behaved fans.

Although there is often negative press about the nature of Celtic fans I get the impression that is a very small proportion that are involved in such activities and the club promotes itself very much as a club for all the family.

» Celtic on Newcastle

In my correspondence with the Celtic Fans on the TalkCeltic forums I took the time to ask their opinions our club. Here are some responses:

“A good club but underachieving, they might have a good season this year if they can keep their best players out of injury.”

“Huge support but expectations too high. Side full of too many average players who get paid huge amounts for little? A Manager who will be tested now as his at a big club. Let’s see if he continues to play that ugly style of football”

“Newcastle are a big club who will now do well because they have a good manager. They don’t seem to get much luck with injuries”

Looking to the friendly the Celtic fans appear to expect a tight game with a draw or narrow win for either side the most likely result. Celtic will look to play 4-4-2 with their major strengths being their athletic goalkeeper Artur Boruc and the attacking talents likely to be displayed in their starting 11. Newcastle’s best chance for victory will be to look to expose the lack of pace of the Celtic defence so a fast paced direct game may favour the likes of Obafemi Martins or Michael Owen getting in behind the defence. With Sam likely to experiment not only with personnel but formation this is likely to be an interesting and insightful affair.
