Reserves: NUFC 1-0 Blackburn
By Paul Mosley On Tue 31 Oct 2006 |
Andy Carroll’s goal 20 minutes from time helped United to add another game to their unbeaten home Reserve League run, which now stretches for 18 games, and leaves us 2nd in the table just a point behind leaders Manchester United, as Blackburn were seen off 1-0 at Kingston Park last night.
United were the better side throughout and deserved their victory. Phil Cave hit the crossbar twice in the 1st half, the 1st being a mishit cross from the left on 7 minutes, followed by a more deliberate effort on his right peg from just outside the area on 21. In between Rovers’ keeper Fielding had saved well from Finnigan. Troisi’s deflected effort 10 minutes before the break was also saved by Fielding, ensuring the scores were level at the break.
Albert Luque got a 55 minute run out before being replaced by Carroll, contributing a few neat touches but nothing as spectacular as his heroics at Liverpool last time out. Troisi and Pattison then went close with efforts from around the edge of the box, before a Phil Cave cross was volleyed goalwards by Carroll, and excellently saved by Fielding.
On 71 however, Fielding was powerless to stop Carroll finding the net as he brought the ball down, went through 2 defenders and slotted it beyond the keeper, with one defender just failing to keep the ball out on the line. The goal was no more than United deserved, and it only took a couple of comfortable saves from Fraser Forster thereafter to secure a 3rd victory in 5 games this season.
NUFC: Forster, Bertram, Bernard, Gate, Huntington, Edgar, Troisi, Pattison, Finnigan, Luque (Carroll 55), Cave
Subs (not used): LuaLua, Shanks, Critchlow, Francis
Ref: Dave Richardson (West Yorkshire) - Also handled Newcastle Benfield’s FA Cup devfeat to York on Saturday. Kept a firm grip on the game and, at his age, looks a dead cert for the Premier League.

Kev, I completely agree. At the last game I went to I was constantly kicked and had mongs shouting in my ear throughout the game (which they weren’t even watching).
I cannot for the life of me understand why they’ve shoved us all into the little stand, and I feel sorry for anyone who has to stand in driving rain, sleet or snow over the next few months.

I’d just like to add that the organisation at Kingston Park is awful!! I’ve got a broken leg at present, and was unable to get a seat in the first half so had to stand up. At half time, I grabbed a seat. 5 minutes into the second half I was told to shift by a steward, as I was in a reserved seat. Prick!
Eventually I got a seat in the middle of a horrible bunch of charva twats.
If someone in a wheelchair had turned up, there would have been no way for them to see the match either. Disabled facilities were awful - surely there are laws against this.
I’ve sent an e-mail to the club complaining about the seating and disabled provision on Monday night. It’s now Thursday afternoon, and I’ve still had no response - I’m not surprised…

Well he’s in the 1st team squad for the 1st time for the trip to Italy.

Cheers for that Paul, lets hope he can make the breakthrough then, we could do with more lads coming through the system and into the first-team instead of splashing out all kinds of money on others.

Carroll’s got a lot of height, and his natural strength is his aerial ability (which was used to good efect when we stuck him in defence for an Academy game last season). He’s improving all the time, but we’ll have to see how he turns out. We’re using him as a targetman of sorts.
I reckon Luque was getting some match fitness ahead of the trip to Italy, but maybe it was just some football to keep him happy.

How good is Andy Carroll, Paul? What are his strengths and what kind of forward is he? He’s supposed to be a good prospect like.
Anyway, good win by the sounds of it. Interesting that Luque featured, I wonder if he’ll get on against Palermo…
