Buying From Our Premiership Rivals 2007: Everton
By James Collins On Mon 16 Jul 2007 |
In recent years, Everton have very much been a yo-yo club within the Premier League. One season they’ll be facing the drop, the next, they’ll be challenging for a European position. Their form over recent years belies the fact that the Goodison Park club have half a good team. But is it a team half empty, or a team half full of talent?
On one hand, Everton have a great solid defensive unit, with the excellent Lescott and Yobo in front of a very good goalkeeper in Tim Howard. Alan Stubbs has always provided apt cover, while recent recruit Phil Jagielka will only increase the defensive strength of the Merseyside club. In midfield, Phil Neville and Lee Carsley put in some real workmanlike performances to protect the defence.
However, that is the real problem with Everton right now, they have a solid spine to their team, but year after year they seem to fail to sign a medley of players who can make a real difference in an attacking sense. There are obvious exceptions however. Andy Johnson was an excellent signing who helped to take much of the goalscoring burden away from Tim Cahill. Both of these players are wasted though, as Everton are seriously lacking in players in wide areas whom can really penetrate the opposition with good movement on and off the ball. Such players would create space and opportunities from which Johnson and Cahill would really thrive and score many more goals. Such players would probably propel Everton into Europe.
There is of course, one special player at Everton who has not yet been mentioned - one Mikel Arteta. Although not offerring the penetration that Everton are crying out for, Arteta possesses excellent technique, and is one of the best passers of the ball in the Premier League. The Spaniard is the player Hugo Viana would had been if he had adapted to English football. Naturally, Arteta is largely responsible for the best attacking sequences seen at Everton in recent years. He has not however reached his full potential playing for Everton, for again, the lack of penetrative wingers, and even the lack of a second striker caused by the regular use of a 4-5-1 formation severely restrict the Basque midfielder’s passing options.
It has been regularly reported at Newcastle that the new management are looking to add one big name, special, world class and exceptionally creative player to the club. Delightful names such as Ronaldinho and Deco have been mentioned. If, as the start of the season draws near, we have failed to snare this big name, Arteta could be the best possible alternative. It would take a significant bid, but Everton aren’t the richest club in the world, highlighted by David Moyes’ recent complaints that the club wont buy him a Mercedes despite buying Andy van der Meyde a Ferrari. Arteta could probably be persuaded to sign for Newcastle if Allardyce sells the club well to him, focusing towards the higher quality of attacking players whom Arteta would be playing alongside.
Moves for Johnson and Cahill should be ruled out as we have too many good strikers to make signing Johnson worthwhile, while if we were to switch formations to accomodate a Cahill style player, Kieron Dyer would probably fulfil the attacking midfield role at a similar standard to the Aussie. Lescott can also be ruled out, for although an excellent defender, the former Wolves player has been at the club a relatively small amount of time, so would probably only be receptive to a move to the top four, or to a part in Star Trek. However Joseph Yobo could be a possible consideration, the athletic centre half seems to rotate between happiness and unhappiness at Goodison Park, and he could be tempted into joining the Nigerian contingent that currently resides at Newcastle United.
Who should we be signing from Everton? Could Arteta be the creative player we are looking for? Have Your Say.

“In the short term the only thing that Newcastle could tempt Arteta with is more money, but in getting that he will be setting himself up for a long hard slog just to help get Newcastle up to where Everton are now.”
Spot on.
You are forgetting we also have Andy Van der Meyde at Everton who is (although yet to be proven in a blue shirt) a very talented winger who has played on the world stage to critical acclaim(nice vid on youtube too).
In pre-season so far he has looked like a new signing, might just be the season that makes him a household name on Merseyside for the right reasons.
Also having the very attacking left back Nuno Valente (who was missing most of last season) fit again and getting in to advanced positions (ala Ashley Cole when he was good), will be a huge boost to the strike force and balls played in to the box.
I’m not counting my chickens yet but I feel something big might happen this season for us. The desire and skill level is at the highest I can recall for a long time.

All good people are talking about Arteta here. I’m an Everton fan and agree he’s one of the greatest signings we’ve made in the last 15 years (if not more) but Newcastle always spend a lot, adding in the middle and up front, forgetting that having a strong backline would make their job a lot, lot easier.
We have a great keeper and one of the best defensive pairings around in Yobo and Lescott. Those three playing for Newcastle last season would have made the difference and put you in Europe. To dismiss Lescott because he’s only had one season in the top flight is daft. He’s solid, versatile, young and destined to be a Goodison great (if we don’t get tens of millions for him before that is). If he had the season he had with us but in a United shirt last year, you’d have had him on the top of this wishlist.
Moyes knows what he’s doing. He will only sign the right players for the club and won’t pay over the odds. If second rate players can earn £40-80k a week elsewhere then good luck to them. We haven’t lost any good players this summer yet, instead we’re securing them on longer contracts. A few more additions like Jagielka and I’m very happy.
Up the Toffees.

As a die hard Evertonian I must admit we have had a diabolical past 15 years (1 FA cup in that time) but I feel a lot more reassured with Davey Moyes at the helm, we have a very good bunch of young players under the age of 25 and feel the future’s very bright. I have seen a lot of very good players pull the blue shirt on, Trevor Steven, Kevin Sheedy, Beardsley, Lineker, Gray, Sharpe, Kanchelskis, to name a few but Mikel Arteta I must say is the best player I’ve seen in a very long time, that man is mustard what a player he can do everything pass, shoot, tackle, creativity, the most complete player in the Prem’ by a mile and only 24. £30mill wouldn’t buy his right leg, so dream on about seeing him play at St. James’ Park.

Credit to Moyes, they do have a club ethos and their players seem committed.
To tempt Arteta, it would take a bid upwards of 15 million pounds…which won’t happen.
Would love to see him here though. Everton wanted Emre two seasons ago…maybe a part exchange?
Nah, just kidding Everton fans, I can just picture you now, spluttering with rage at the very suggestion…

Arteta signed a new contract a few weeks ago, but I would have liked him.

While we may have been “rollercoaster” side over the last 5 years under DM, it can only be a sign of a bright future that Mikel Arteta & Tim Cahill have agreed long term deals with us, as they are key players for us & A J has a tremendous work rate, & with Tim Howard at the back in excellent form behind Joleon Lescott & Joseph Yobo & the recent signing of Phil Jagielka, there is a great spirit & passion at the club. Things are looking good…..!!! COYB!!!

Mr Moyes has got together a squad of good players who play as a team and for each other, not as a bunch of taleted individuals. Everton are not the richest club in the premiership by far and as such cannot pay the big money that the ‘bankrolled’ clubs shell out.
We get players who really want to play for Everton and not those who are only interested in the size of the paypacket. I put Mikel Arteta in that bracket,no doubt Newcastle would be prepared to double his Everton pay but at the end of the day Mikel is happy at Goodison Park.

for the last five years moyes has been slowly but surely season after season been bringing in a better quality of player and a “dressing room” despite tight purse strings everton have arrived at the point where the players we have’ are prepared to sign long term contracts and agents of players touting their players as ex-evertonians wanting to join their boyhood club barton, nugent, jagielka ect, nugent was over priced by at least 2mil. barton and jagielka had get-out clauses (low priced)the choice was obvious jagielka for reasons of “team spirit” big sam has that to build no matter who newcaste try to cherry pick

Arteta outperformed fabregas last season in terms of assists and goals so it shows how good he is.
He’s also not a lightweight like Emre is for us, you mention Viana but the job Arteta does is the one emre should be doing for us.
Arteta is at the right age for a player to be performing week in week out at his peak, and coupled with his new long contract, everton being in europe and us not, along with the current transfer market would mean his value must be near 15m remember that fabregas has been linked with a 20m switch to madrid.
our best bet of signing a player like arteta is too hopefully beat everton to a uefa spot next season and use our new financial levarage to land him along with a big wage packet and hope he doesnt interest a top 4 side. if dyers on 80kpw then arteta is surely woth near that if that what it takes to get him.
Arteta is definatly the one top player i think buying from our rivals would improve our team the most and that we could actually tempt away given the right circumstances.

Arteta has just signed a new 4 year contract, he is at a club in Europe.
He is a classy player and would be a great addition to your squad, but he will be a blue for the forseable future!!

Yes, “Steve Gibson” the opposition fans commenting on these articles range from “ill informed and funny” to “intelligently raised points”. I should stress that “Sack the Juggler” is however the later of my two categories.
I personally can’t wait for the “debate” that “Who shall we buy from Sunderland? - no one” will start. I know a Makem who can use a computer. Honest! Let the games begin!

I do like these articles. It takes only a matter of minutes to wind up the supporters of the clubs mentioned to cry on about why would such and such want to leave our club and go to Newcastle? The fact is we pay good wages and can afford it. Take the article as it should be……a pure suggestion and nothing more.

While I agree with your assessment of the player’s ability, there is a major flaw in your assessment of their availability. Arteta (and Cahill) has just signed a brand new contract and is happy at the club. He has helped bring the club into Europe and will be looking forward to playing there next season, so why would he be interested in moving to Newcastle?
Newcastle are perrenial underacheivers, and while I honestly believe that Allardyce could be the manager to finally take the club forward, I’m not sure that he will be given the time to do so by the current owner (although if Ashely gets in then he might).
In the short term the only thing that Newcastle could tempt Arteta with is more money, but in getting that he will be setting himself up for a long hard slog just to help get Newcastle up to where Everton are now.
Allardyce might get Newcastle back into the top six next season, he’s making the right moves and getting rid of Bramble will automatically improve Newcastle’s league position next season, but I suspect that it will take him a season or two to settle the squad before he starts to build the team that he wants.
