Dermot GallagherDermot Gallagher, the Premiership’s oldest referee, will take charge of our visit to Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.

Gallagher was last seen on Tyneside when we beat Arsenal 1-0 on this same weekend last year, dismissing Gilberto Silva of the visitors. His other United game last season was our goalless draw with West Ham back in August 2005, when he also sent off a visiting player, Paul Konchesky, although that one was rightly overturned, for it was a fine challenge.

Gallagher did however referee our 3-0 win over Blackburn at St James’ in September 2004, on the day of John Carver’s only game in charge of the club, denying us a couple of what appeared to be stone wall penalties.
