N-O Panel: Aston Villa 4-1 Newcastle United
By Jonny Hall On Sat 16 Feb 2008 |
Newcastle United took the lead at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, then fell four goals behind in scenes which have been typical of this season. Michael Owen grabbed his second goal in as many games to give United the lead after six minutes, but it all went downhill from there and in a disasterous second half, the Magpies fell apart. We got reaction from the Panel on yet more disappointment….

““One-nil up, four-one down, Stephen Carr’s a f’ing clown…†wouldn’t have been out of place had it been sung towards the death of our lunchtime game with Aston Villa on Saturday as John Carew dispatched his penalty making hat-trick with aplomb down at the Holte End to send us away fans back to their buses with plenty of misery for company. It had all looked so promising to begin with.
The first-half was certainly not a spectacle, but at least our players showed some willingness and ability as we created a couple of decent chances for our forward player (unfortunately, I’m not sure if Alan Smith is worthy of the title yet with 0 goals to his name, so I’m sticking to the singular) and he promptly dispatched one of them with a lovely deft header at the near post. Michael Owen, thankfully, seems to be finding his feet again and it’s imperative that he stays fit and in this mood if we are to pull away from the desperate hands below that are clawing out to drag us into the mire.
While Owen looked sharp and busy, the same could not be said of Alan Smith – although I am at pains to point out that expecting him to beat Martin Laursen in what must have been nigh on fifty direct aerial conflicts was asking a hell of a lot from our supposed “target manâ€. Where the hell was Viduka? For that matter, where the hell was Emre? …Or Enrique? People might put these queries of the Messiah down to foresight, but I asked the same questions before kick-off and persistently during the game… as my travelling buddy will no doubt confirm!
I did not and do not understand playing Stephen Carr at left-back, even though he didn’t get particularly found out until Martin O’Neill waved his magic wand at half-time and set Ashley Young on him – the little winger ran him ragged. The real turning point though was the introduction of Marlon Harewood to batter our shamefully weak centre halves. Steven Taylor and Claudio Cacapa must have proven themselves to be no good together by now, surely! Especially when you have a fit Abdoulaye Faye on the bench…
I stated before the game that I was worried about our ability to deal with the size and power of John Carew and I forwarded the notion that Faye, being our largest and most imposing defender, would be the man to do it. Instead Taylor and Cacapa got battered and bruised – particularly in the second period – and the big Norwegian ended up with 3 goals… not great from Keegan, I’m afraid. Barton and Butt were worringly – but expectedly – inept in the centre of the park, although the latter did win some momentous tackles at times. The fact remains that they are not good enough against teams like Villa away, though, and the sooner Special K realises this the better.
So then, another drubbing on the road has seen ‘Boro creep past us in the table, while Sunderland find themselves a mere 2 points behind. Manchester United at home comes next and again, I’d be delighted with a point. For Villa, though, a surge at the top six looks to be sustainable on the evidence of this second half.
Man of the Match: Michael Owen”
Jonny
“Well. What can you say after that really?
You do all that work in the first half and in typical Newcastle United fashion, you throw it away later on and completely collapse, usually on live television.
Oh how shocked Sky Sports must have been when Michael Owen headed home in the opening minutes to give the Magpies a shock lead; that wasn’t in the script. We then proceded to play some good football, pass it around a bit and frustrate the Villa team and support, and it work for most of the 1st half.
Then it happened.
Good, attacking changes from MON; nothing from Keegan. Instant reaction from the team which came out all guns blazing; nothing from Newcastle. A hattrick of goals for John Carew who look phenominal in the second stages; Viduka was sat on the bench for 90 minutes.
You tell yourself the players aren’t good enough, but at the end of the day they proved in the first half that they can do it, they just don’t know how to finish it. Fact is, Keegan should have changed it around earlier but didn’t. Why was Viduka not brought on at all? Why did Emre only come on at 1-3?
We need a victory and we were in the perfect position to get it at Villa, against the odds. They changed it around and we didn’t. Villa won the game because Villa deserved to win the game, and as usual Newcastle were left scratching their heads.
MOTM: Michael Owen’s best game in a long LONG time.”

cacapa is not bad and an excellent reader of he game. went to both arsenal away games and some of the things were top class and things other defenders at our club wouldn’t have had the quality to do. Taylor get’s overlooked a lot and unfortunately for me it seems that bramble has rubbed off on him. Sometimes he positions himself poorly or just messes up, plain and simple. could be a very good player though. lay off cacapa though because i am telling you now that many of his faults are covering taylor’s mistakes. i remember seeing a ball played by aston villa when taylor left it for another player and cacapa had to go and cover in behind him to clean up his mess (not that in that instance he did it well). I am not saying cacapa has been outstanding, and i fully support the fact he has made mistakes but i still think he is a very good player.
People here are also being too short sighted within play and parts of play things happen which are indirectly caused by other things such as positioning, giving the ball away etc. Our team is not currently a unit and especially in central midfield at this moment is seriously weak. the defence wouldn’t have so many problems if we were structured and our players weren’t always giving the ball away so the opposition could attack us (for the 62nd time in the match).

and i cant agree with you on alan smith either. although he hasnt scored for newcastle he hasnt had the chances created for him in front of goal. he is quality and has been one of our best players this year. i mean hes played for manchester united and england so he cant be that bad. KEEP SMITH!

we played an aston villa team without their top goalscorer (agbonglahor) and still got beat 4 - 1. I read comments on this page that the first half performance showed that we had good players. NUFC fans need to get that notion from their heads COMPLETELY. In the starting lineup that played against Villa, five of them can bog off. CARR - inept at best, hes just not a very good player. League two level I would say, and I am being nice and trying so hard not to swear. CACAPA - good player in France, good on the ball etc, However, he is playing in a BAD newcastle team right now, and we cannot afford to be blooding players into the Premiership when we are in a relegation dogfight. He may be a good defender in France, but not in Prem. Barton and Butt -where do I start? OK, Nicky Butt is crap and Joey Barton is crap, there, that wasnt hard. If you watch the game again, you could count on one hand the amount of times the two players passed to another teamate..it was disgusting the amount of times they both gave the ball away. They have no pace or strength or real technical abilty. People rave about barton but he was captain of a team that nearly went down last year. They just are not good enough for NUFC. We want to be challenging top six right? Lets compare with other teams we were meant to be challenging with, Everton..ARTETA & CAHILL. Villa.. BARRY & REO COKER Porstmouth MUNTARI & DIARRA Man City ELANO & HAMANN, we just do not have the same quality. Then on to Alan Smith, God Bless him, he does graft, but thats what sunday leage players also do. Damn, Id pay £200 a week to graft for my beloved NUFC, id still score the amount of goals Smith has…NONE!(maybe i might take a penalty and get one) Smith is not good enough. keegan cannot be blamed at all, he just does not have good players..in fact, he has some very very bad players. I beleive we will stay up, but by heck do we need to rip the team apart and start again. TWO NEW QUALITY CENTRE HALFS. TWO NEW QUALITY CENTER MIDFIELDERS AND TWO NEW QUALITY STRIKERS. Simple as that. Our wide players in Zogy amd Milner i have faith with, Beye and Enrique are coming and will come good. Given is class, Taylor, with hard work will become class, owen needs games, but also competition from other class strikers. Right now NUFC has too many crap players, hence the fact that we are below boro and a couple points above the Scum. When we get better players in we will move up the table and produce better performances. Football is that simple.

Scott agree with you on Taylor, as much as i do rate the lad he is by far the finished article, while Cacacpa reminds me a bit like Bramble can play really well but iam always expecting him to mess up, and cant find any words that describe how bad a player Carr truly is, from what ive seen of Enrique he hasnt done that bad not sure why he hasnt been playing more.

Youre right PaulM, Taylor wasnt responsible in this case but he, Cacapa and Carr have all been guilty of this of late. I just hope as good as Taylor will be in years to come he doesnt think he is beyond criticism. He is after all part of the, statistically, 3rd worst defence in the country at the moment !!

carr, barton and smith have all shown that they don’t have the quality required to be in a good footballing team. The signs were there in the 1st half that we were going to concede and this is where i was disapoointed by keegan. the team are clearly playing better but enrique is 10*>carr, and underrated, viduka needed to replace smith since we clearly needed an outlet to hold the ball up and relieve pressure, and emre needed to replace barton simply because he is better with and on the ball. I didnt see the 2nd half but the signs were there in the 1st that we were going to concede. i remember a really good passing move in the 1st half were there was some one touch stuff being played down the left then it go threaded intot barton, who trying to pass to smith i think, managed to knock it behind for a goal kick with a terrible ball and put us on the back foot. Faye also needed to come on somewhere, possibly midfield, just to add a presence to that area of the pitch since we were clearly lacking there.

Stephen Carr is an awful, awful player who is well passed his best.
Why Keegan played him out of position in preference to the up and coming Jose Enrique is beyond me.

All these comments are correct, however, The one sided nature of the second came about due to the fact Villa started to play football, rather than Newcastle giving it away. In the 1st half Villa were dreadfully inept rather than Newcastle good. Overall, this result shows the gulf between the top 6 and the bottom 6.

Good game, Agree with comments about taylor seemed a little to confident, even after the goals started to go in?
Good luck for the rest of the season, lets all try and get at the big four next season, its about time the also rans such as villa, newcastle, everton, spurs and man city started taking points of em and making the league a better place UTV

Scott from what i remember about the game didnt the ball hit Bartons arm the first half and the second half it was Carr who thought he was playing volley ball, i hold my hands up if iam wrong.
Iam seriously getting worried about our premier league credentials, we are now in the fight of our life for survival, i feel we are no better than any team in the league and looking at our remaining fixtures iam scratching my head at where the wins will come, ive not seen any performances that convince me other wise, the team has no confidence or belief, we struggle to create anything and any sustained pressure on our goal and we just implode.
Just want this season over.

It’s taken so long to get these reports online this time, that I can hardly remember the game! (That could be on purpose
I seem to remember expecting to get nothing from the game & being pleasantly surprised to go ahead early on. Obviously they tore us apart in the 2nd half & we left with egg on our faces for the benefit of the press, again.
Well, I console myself by remembering I expected no points & that we have ManU next… Bugger.
I honestly feel that any points that we pick up between now & when we face Birmingham are all just a bonus. We have about 4 matches left that look winnable, we need 2-3 wins from them & we’ll be ready for next season in the Prem.

Taylor is forever handling the ball in the box, he’s becoming a liability and is far from being the player he thinks he is. I think the U-21 captaincy has went to his head. Every time I pick up the Chronicle he is there having something to say. I think he should keep his mouth shut and focus on developing his game and become the player he already thinks he is !
