It would appear that some things are put on this earth purely to remind us how old we are. As a kid growing up in the sticks of Northumberland, Saturday afternoons consisted of watching the wrestling at 4 o’clock followed by football results on the teleprinter, then at 5:30 it was Dr Who time.

Glenn Roeder has criticised fixture congestion with the Toon playing 3 games in 6days. During the interview he made the following remarks - “we are competing in 4 competitions this year” and “We don’t have the size of squad required to be successful in those competitions”

Steve Bennett of Orpington (Kent) takes charge of our vital clash with Sheffield United at St James Park later today.
Remarkably it is 3 and a half years since we last won a game refereed by Bennett, the derby at Sunderland in April 2003. Since then we have drawn 6 and lost 6 of the following 12 games.
His last trip to St. James’ Park was in September when he presided over our 1-1 draw with Everton, dismissing Titus Bramble and Tony Hibbert to leave both sides with 10 men.
