Talking Points: Congestive Snippets
By Archie Brand On Sat 4 Nov 2006 |
Glenn Roeder has criticised fixture congestion with the Toon playing 3 games in 6days. During the interview he made the following remarks - “we are competing in 4 competitions this year” and “We don’t have the size of squad required to be successful in those competitions”
After all of the hype at the end of last season and the effort put in by our guys it appears that the UEFA Cup is now an inconvenience.
How could this little problem have been avoided?
1, Not qualifying for Europe would have helped.
or
2, Buying more players would increase the size of the squad.
I kinda get the impression Roeder might have had something to do with both items 1 and 2, so its a bit late for him to start bitching about it.
I consider such competitions to be a natural form of handicap.
If you have qualified for Europe it would suggest that your team is half decent, better than the others in the league, so if you have to play a few more games, suffer a few more injuries and end up with a few more tired legs, then that evens it out a bit for the rest of them.
As a further handicap how about playing all Internationals midweek too, and as a result not interrupting the domestic schedule? Gets rid of all that nasty congestion, and adds a little further hadicapping for all of those mega teams who field nine or ten internationals every week.
Just a thought.

When we made it to the intertoto at the end of last season, I had mixed feelings about it all.
As a positive, being down in Swindon I’d get to see more of Newcastle on the TV (& I went to St James’ for my stag do to watch the 1st match) & it might help attract a few decent players (& hopefully a decent manager).
As a negative, I knew it was a false position & I knew that it would mean Glenn would get the job.
With what has gone on since Glenn stood in as manager, I wish Glenn hadn’t had such a lucky run & we were not in Europe this season with one of the smallest squads in the Premiership. Is it just me of was Sir Bobby saying when he was in charge that the squad was too small & every summer since we’ve sold more then we’ve bought? Add to that the wages going up each year!
I also wonder if we do want to attract the type of player that would choose not to come to us because we’re not in Europe the next season. Does that not set us up with fair weather players?

Dave,
Thanks for your comments, I’m always interested in what people have to say about what I write. Even, as in your case, when the comments may not be positive.
So how would you alleviate the fixture congestion?
I think we would both agree that the 3 or 4 weekends of the season where International fixures cause Premier League scheduling to be messed up seriously contribute to excessing fixture loading.
Is it fair that the FA get to hijack the weekends while pushing the league games to midweek? This effectively boosts the gate for internationals (FA) while reducing it for the league (clubs).
All sounds a bit dodgy to me.
In case you’re interested the “snippets” articles are written more as comments or questions intended to provoke discussion, not serious in-depth articles.
I probably put more thought into chosing which shirt I wear for work.
There again, you should see my shirts.

One slight problem with that suggestion genius. Midweek fixtures don’t draw the crowds as people have these things called ‘jobs’ and find it difficult to buy food if they get sacked for being at the football.
To be honest though, watching England is depressing so screw the internationals.
However I do think your article is poor.
