Shearer: Lay Off Shepherd & Roeder
By N.O On Sat 11 Nov 2006 |
Former number 9 Alan Shearer has pledged his support to underfire duo Freddy Shepherd and Glenn Roeder.
Shearer on the Chairman:
“Under his chairmanship, millions have been ploughed into buying players. He has backed every manager he has had.
“Some of the signings have come off, some haven’t. But he has backed the managers to get it right.
“Now, had he not backed them with hard cash, what would people have said then? He passionately wants to get things right.
“He has appointed top-quality managers with proven track records. I don’t remember anyone complaining about those appointments at the time.
“Kenny Dalglish won titles at Blackburn and Liverpool. Ruud Gullit had won trophies at Chelsea.
“Bobby Robson had won things at every club he had been at around Europe and got us into the Champions League. Graeme Souness had also won trophies at his clubs.”
Shearer on Roeder:
“I worked with Glenn last season and thought he was excellent.
“I think he is the man for this situation and I know he is working the players hard to get things right.
“But you cannot really judge him when the team is short of their three main strikers and cannot score.
“It’s just an impossible situation. He will be trying to find ways round it.
“Glenn is an excellent coach and you will not find him making excuses.
“He also has the support of all the players who do not have a bad word to say against him.
“Just remember he oversaw the club winning six of its last seven games last season to get us into Europe. I don’t remember people questioning him then.
“I know it’s frustrating. Hey, I feel frustrated just thinking about it now.
“The frustration has built up over the years and is spilling out again now. You have had Manchester United, Arsenal and now Chelsea up there taking the honours.
“Newcastle have been crashing on that door and thrown everything at getting through it.
“It just has not happened and that is frustrating, particularly when you have got 52,000 in St James’ every week willing you on. Now we find ourselves on the trap-door at the other end of the league. But this is the time when everyone has to stay together.
“The biggest plus this club has got is its fan-base and they have to stick by the team and manager. They are needed now as much as ever.
Shearer on the lack of goals scored:
“The team has got only two goals in seven league games. But I really do not know how Glenn Roeder can be blamed.
“He has been without his main three strikers and is now asking a 19-year-old lad in Giuseppe Rossi to lead the line.
“I was playing golf with Gianfranco Zola recently and he is involved with the Italian Under-21s of which Rossi is a part.
“He insists Rossi has a great future but it is tough for him to be carrying the load of expectation now. Newcastle could even lose him in January because he is only on loan until then from United.
“The point is Michael Owen, Shola Ameobi and Obafemi Martins are all injured. That is why they cannot score goals. I cannot see how a new manager could change that.
“Things are going to have to be rectified in the transfer window.
“Until then, it is obviously going to be tough to find the goals to get the club clear of the drop zone.
“Glenn had a tremendous run at the end of last season and was a popular choice. But now he hasn’t got an experienced striker.
“I wonder how Alex Ferguson would get on without Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha?”

Mitch, petitions won’t do a thing. No, to oust the current board fans would have to withdraw their money from the club and even then, we would need someone willing to buy the Halls and Shepherd’s out and for them to be willing to sell. While there does seem to be a few interested parties and the Halls at least seem ready to sell, nothing is guaranteed or far from concrete on that front.

I love Big Al as much as any other Geordie does, and always love to hear his point of view, however we could of done without this one. He is just encouraging Shepherd and Roeder to carry on fucking it up. What we need right now from Al is him in charge. Because the useless idiots doing the job at the minute are making a complete mess of it. I reckon we should start a petition to get Shepherd and Roeder out. The talk is there but no action is being taken, so lets start!!
Petition to:
Shepherd and his board, Roeder and his staff out.

I have no problem with Shearer coming out and saying these things, I actually expect him to toe the party line, after all he is still employed by the club in some capacity so he is hardly going to start criticising the management.
He also has many friends in the team who were his team-mates a few short months back so he’s not going to start attacking them either, now is he?
That would actually be quite callous of the man and totally out of character, now I would question his motives if he did do just that.
No, as ever Big Al is a tactile person who won’t rock the boat. I’m sure his comments are more of a “chin up” team-talk than a 100% endorsement of the board, the failures and our depressing season.
Likewise I have no problem with fans having their say but we’re looking to the wrong person to say it how it is. That would be unfair to expect that from Shearer in my opinion.
What we need anyway isn’t yet more words of comfort, but solid action. Words mean nothing.

Firstly will everybody rid themslves of this POOR US attitude, it’s sickeningly pathetic and it’s about time we start to accept some damn responsibility for our problems rather then blaming misfortune or bad luck, ironically if we were to do this then we would actually start getting some good fortune. Firstly you reap what you sow, and we’ve sowed some pretty bad seeds. It’s karma baby, and we’re gonna keep going round this circle until we learn the lessons that we need to be learnt. Those lesson’s are that Shepherd needs to leave or grow an actual business brain allied with strategic nous (never gonna happen) and we need to start again with this club, building upon solid foundations that are the bedrock of any successful club.
But I digress, because here is a list of Shepherds many mistakes…
Lack of Shearer and Woodgate replacements
Obsessed with big name signings (Owen, Luque, Martins, Duff) rather then building for the present and future with hungry intelligent players (Johnsons, Campbells, Nugents, Ashtons etc.)
Ridiculing and patronising the fans
Always hiring managers with the opposite attributes of the previous incumbent (i.e. Robson soft, Souness tough - Keegan flair, Dalglish dour)
Sacking managers at the worst times
Refusal to sign players early in window to save on wages. Then complains about window!
Argues with managers about who to sign
Sells players behind managers’ backs
Refusal to pay top dollar for proven Premiership players but then goes out and pays even more for unproven foreign talent
Myopic introspective view on Geordie nation
Sheikh scandal
Poor financial handling
Has a rather skewered view on PR and marketing
Not accepting any responsibility for his gross mishandling of the club
Declaring that Roeder was the fans choice despite much evidence to the contrary. Based this claim upon his FREAKIN EMAIL INBOX rather then any ground research or fan study!
Lack of respect for the footballing pyramid
Dismissed fan’s who tried to promote Hitzfeld
The fact no self respecting top manager would ever work for him because of the shadow of Shearer and Freddy’s reputation
Is easily impressionable (i.e. agents)
Refused to strengthen when we finished third (fucking crazy!!!)
Finished more times out of the top 6 with him in charge then he would have you believe
Appalling lack of tact shown regarding the Robson affair
No long term strategy ever discussed or promoted
And I suspect there are many many more errors and mistakes made along the way!
PEOPLE WAKE UP, WE WILL NEVER ESCAPE OUR PROBLEMS OR MAKE IT OUT OF THE DOLDRUMS UNTIL FREDDY LEAVES AND WE START LOOKING AT A WIDER PERSECTIVE AND INVESTIGATING THE DEEPER MALAISE!
Comment’s like Shearer’s are welcomed, I always welcome everybody’s opinions but that doesn’t mean we too are not entitled to examine and criticize the content of them. Clearly they show an effort to pull the party line and remain highly superficial, absolving Freddy and Glenn from any blame and they lack any real insight or evidence that backs up his support of both men other then the ONLY apparent positives he can bring up!
There has to be a detailed analysis or inquiry into the running our club, for people need to be exposed to the gross misconduct and ineptitude for which Newcastle United has been handled with. THERE MUST BE ACCOUNTABILITY, OTHERWISE THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY SUCCESS!
SHEPHERD OUT, FOREVER!

Like any supporter of NUFC Shearer’s entitled to his opinion, and I think suggestions his comments about our current plight are anything but his honest and objective views are disrespectful.
I’m inclined to agree with what Shearer said. Losing Owen was a major blow, and combined with the injuries to Shola and Martins has left Roeder with an impossible task - there’s a limit to how many strikers we can have and expecting the club to have enough to cover the absence of three first choice centre forwards is unrealistic.
It’s also a fact that Mr Shepherd had backed all his managers with big money, and that Kenny, Ruud and Bobby were of proven quality. Even Souness had a fair record, and Roeder did a great job last season. They might not have succeeded but it’s easy to be wise after the event.

Well, at least one of the papers today has Shepherd trying to buy out the Halls.

Shearer will one day be Manager and i think he will fail.

Didn’t see that coming!
Alan, we love you, you are a legend, but when you put your name down with the names of Shepherd and Roeder, you’re just disappointing the fans, because you know they are leading this club straight to the championship.
I never thought Alan Shearer would lose the sense of what is right and what is wrong for the club.
Hopefully we can see more intelligent comments from Ahearer in the future, because this one is unbelievable.

It really saddens me to hear Shearer talking crap.

John
What Shearer talked about was clearly an effort to pull the party line. We are not idiots, just because Shearer’s played for us and is still a legend doesn’t mean we can’t question his public statements and suggest what probably would have been a better move (i.e. to stay quiet). And yes, if there were a takeover (and i pray there will be) I would love to see Alan put in charge, because I separate a person from that of their behaviour or actions. Shearer was a hero on the pitch, and is a very knowledgeable football man.
However surely any detailed analysis on the state of our club goes to disapprove the majority of what Shearer say’s as simply not the case (concerning Shepherd and Roeder) and therefore it is our right and entitlement of us all as Mag’s to discuss and argue the differing points of view on the table. I for one, firmly lay the blame at Freddy’s feet and the vast majority of evidence backs me up, that’s fact. So I take objection no matter who from when I hear comments and statements appearing to back Shepherd with the churned out line ‘He’s backed all his managers’
SHEPHERD OUT!

John, your comments were removed for one reason and one reason only - for abusing the system. This is not a platform for fans to bicker and criticise one another, if you can’t accept others’ opinions without resorting to childish remarks I suggest you discontinue using the site. This isn’t a message board or a forum - it is a platform for fans who simply want to have their say on NUFC without having someone jumping on their views.
Abusing people for their views won’t be accepted on this site.

Now we see Newcastle online’s true colours, don’t we? You didn’t like my comment about ignoring Shearer being rank stupidity, so you removed it!
Shearer is a legend and vastly more experienced and knowledgable than any of us. Just because you don’t agree with what he says does not mean you should dismiss what he says.
You know, it makes me laugh; if there was a takeover and Shearer was appointed manager you’d all be cheering for him! You’d say he was Keegan MK2! But because he’s saying something which you don’t agree with you think he should stay in the background and keep his mouth shut! And you wonder why I call you muppets and morons! You’re ridiculous!

I agree, Shearer would have done best to have just stayed quiet at this point in time. Besides, even if he can see the bigger picture, I doubt he would speak out. Remember he is our manager elect and current ‘ambassador’, he has a duty to pull out the party line.
I believe most Mags can see where the blame truly lies, Mr. Shepherd! Do not be fooled by Shearer’s comments, Freddy is ulimately responsible for this club and he has failed with a gross dereliction of duty. He clearly lacks the basic intelligence, competence and strategic nous to be able to run a successful club, but then again I suspect his motives!
A clear lack of a long term plan and appalling decision making is just symptomatic of the mismanagement of this club ever since the day Sir John handed over the club to this grotesque fraud of a toad.
Ignore Shearer, I’m disappointed but it’s to be expected!
SHEPHERD OUT!

Man Utd lost Saha for the best part of the season, Solskjaer for 2 years, Van Nistelrooy for 3 months, Alan Smith for best part of a year plus Rooney’s injury, but they have the squad and the manager with the know how to deal with these situations. I have huge rspect for Shearer but to hear him supporting Roeder and Shepherd does nothing for me. Wasn’t Shearer the man who backed Souness all the way to the Jobcentre despite the compelling evidence staring him in the face. I understand that he won’t criticise the management but I think he’d be more respected if he said nothing and tried to have an input behind the scenes.
