Free public transport for all. I win you.
Err How much we spend in Gulf war guvnah?
The UK faces no enemy that can be dealt with using nuclear weapons. Nor is such an enemy likely to re-emerge.
There is zero justification for spending billions of pounds on a weapon that is only useful against an enemy that no longer exists
. It is argued by those pro-Trident that the UK should retain its nuclear deterrent as an ‘insurance policy’ against future threats that might emerge later this century. This is a nonsense argument, because it assumes that ‘the future’ will not be affected by the replacement of Trident. In reality, the disarming of the UK would greatly improve Britain’s standing with the majority of the world and, combined with greater efforts at multilateral disarmament (as required by law), would greatly reduce the threat of proliferation and of nuclear war.
Agree here. But you're assuming that Iran, North Korea etc. etc. are going to disarm the moment the UK and US does. Every sees nuclear power as a 'get out of jail free' card now. If you have nuclear power, nobody can touch you. Sadly it's becoming some sort of political line, which if you cross it, gives you unimaginable power to f*** about.
I do struggle to see what good behaving like a world superpower does us though. We've got nuclear weapons, an expeditionary army, lots of hardware and we bum the Americans hard. I'd feel a bit better about the whole thing if I understood what all this expenditure was trying to achieve. At the moment I don't see it. Any ideas?
'Preaching to the converted' 'barking at the wrong tree' etc.
I'm with you here. However, to echo a sentiment mentioned in this thread, it's not like we can turn the clock back and realize that the development of nuclear power will f*** the world up quite a bit before we actually developed the darn thing. It's here now, nothing can be done about it. Imagine though, that the UK did actually disarm and NK and Iran develop them. Metaphorically they'd have a gun pointed to our heads and basically can do whatever the f*** they want and tell us to do whatever they want. However, this Trident bs is basically that, bs. No need. Waste of money.

Indeed. I suspect the nuclear weapons thing is also tied up with the desire to remain on the UN Security Council, for all the good it does us. We could save a lot of money bringing troops and hardware home, if we accepted we are no longer the world's policeman, and don't have to back up the Americans in every madcap war they kick off.

you quite clearly have no f****** clue what the UK armed forces actually do around the world, and what the concequences would be if they came home

Is that directed at me, tin head? You may notice I actually asked the question. Getting your rather small virtual cock out doesn't help at all, does it? Why not answer the question instead, it's called having a discussion.

you asked the question, then made this statement:
"We could save a lot of money bringing troops and hardware home, if we accepted we are no longer the world's policeman, and don't have to back up the Americans in every madcap war they kick off"
so why did you ask the question if you already had the answer, i.e. they serve no purpose and could be withdrawn without concequence

It's called putting forward an idea. Plainly you're unfamiliar with the concept.
