N-O Panel: Post Match Stoke (a)
By Jonny Hall On Mon 7 Jan 2008 |
Stoke City fought hard and earned a replay against low-edged Newcastle at the Brittania Stadium on Sunday night. In the last tie of the weekend, the Magpies travelled to Stoke on the back of a few poor performances, having collected only one point in twelve. The Stoke City side on the other hand were flying high on an unbeaten run, and that run continued with a 0-0 draw played out infront of the BBC Cameras. We got the panel’s reaction…

“I’m going to use this here pulpit at Newcastle-Online to put out a plea to my fellow supporters: has anybody got a cave for me to live in for a few years, or a massive rock for me to huddle under? When will the mediocrity end? I’m not even an old hand at this, and so my respect for our older generation of die-hard supporters continues to grow. The light at the end of the tunnel that became visible once more in the summer after all of the changes is sharply diminishing, and I can feel the apathy creeping in once more.
I said before that I hate games like this, and I hate the FA Cup, (this is a view which has been further hardened by this afternoons 4th Round Draw – Arsenal away, f****** brilliant!) Someone up there, or down there, or somewhere, does not like us – and I’m not just talking about the media (local and national now it seems). We’re probably spoiled brats these days more than anything, I mean it’s not like we’ve had to suffer lower league football for well over a decade now, but for a club of this potential it still hurts to see us being “delighted†with a draw away at Stoke – who, let’s be honest, are a f****** s**** football team.
Aye, they’re big (Bright and Pearce made us aware of that enough times), but they’ve got no pace, no discernible technical ability and they couldn’t pass the ball for toffee… oh, hang on, that sounds awfully familiar… I know that negativity like this probably isn’t what you want to be reading at the minute, but I’m not sure if I can even act positive at the minute – I mean, have you seen our next 4 away games, for starters? Man Utd, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool… dear me, without Beye and Faye too.
The latter was the best player on the park yet again and we missed the former, although I don’t think Rozehnal was as bad as some are making out. I’m not sure what to say about the game really, we just weren’t very good. Stoke tried to drag us down to their level and beat us with experience, and it nearly worked. I have to say though, I think they were taking the piss by bringing on what was obviously either a rugby or darts player near the end. The appearance of Jon “The Ringer†Parkin was the highlight for me, what a fat b******! Don’t mention that he nearly scored, like…
Man of the Match: Abdoulaye Faye (yet again)”

“The cameras were on us, with the media just itching to see Stoke send us tumbling out of the cup. Well, they haven’t got their wish yet. I felt that the draw was a fair result. It was going to be a battling game, and that’s exactly what both sides produced. Stoke will probably claim the moral victory, which is fair enough given that they held and matched a side that is a division above them, but it was by no means a poor performance from ourselves.
So, we have to do it all again, although we now have home advantage (mind you, remember what happened last year?). I’m confident that we’ll go through to the next round. If we do so, we’re away to Arsenal… oh great.”

“Yet another poor turnout for Newcastle United.
You know there was actually a part of me that thought we could turn them over, show some Premier League class and finally get out of the mess that we seem to be in at the moment; how wrong I was.
Stoke played some decent stuff, granted they were the home side, and despite what Big Sam says, looked the more likely to score. They had two clearances from Steven Taylor and a few more saves from Shay Given to stop them from doing so; how they didn’t score, I really don’t know.
Bar the ball scraping just over Michael Owen’s head, Newcastle had little in the way of goal mouth action apart from a few N’Zogbia chances and shots from Nicky Butt which kept going over the bar - seriously the lad should play rugby.
At the end of the day, with the chances that they had, they should have won the game and a team with more class would have finished us off. But it’s a draw, a clean sheet and we’re still in the cup.
So it’s a replay next week followed by a 4th round tie at Arsenal if we overcome that; oh joy, the FA Cup’s practically in the bag.
MOTM: Steven Taylor.”

I thought my prophecy might be fulfilled, but not on the same bloody day!
Not that it was much of a prophecy. More of predictable.

I said below I was relieved at the result and not disappointed, and this is mainly due to the fact I would have taken a draw before the game in our current situation.
We could have won, and I thought we did look the better team. Stoke did cause a couple of worrying moments, and this was mainly due to a couple of shambolic incidents - A couple of horrific moments of deflections past the post, off-the-line-stuff, etc.
But apart from 2 or 3 heart-in-the-mouth moments caused by our own defence I thought we were the better team. Just.
I strongly fancy us to win the replay, but I do have memories of last seasons Brum match in my mind. Brum were outclassed by us in the 1st game, and we should have beaten them by a couple of goals, and they were certainly less deserving of a replay than Stoke this season. We all know what happened there… So I’m just saying beware!!!
As for Ashley / Allardyce - I think this transfer window will give us a clearer indication of whats going on.
If Allardyce is backed with a stack of cash to buy the players he thinks can get us into Europe then Ashley is in for the long run and thinks Sam is the man to get us up the table. However, if no money or little money is spent then I would cast doubt over if Ashley’s heart is in it or if Sam will be here at the start of next season.
Mourinho and Hitzfeld are available from the summer, and if Ashley is here long term and doubts Sam I bet he’s taken note of that.

well we did it again showed the rest of the footballing country what real embarrassment is .the only way to cure this is for sam to come up with a cunning plan. play 1 5 5 that’s shay 5 defenders and 5 forwards as he dosen’t seem to use midfielders the defenders could kick long balls up and the forwards can score who needs a midfield

adam - why should stoke have won? cos they managed 40% of the possession, or cos they had a couple of half decent chances but did not convert? the game was well under control by newc but as with stoke, we just could not put the ball in the net. the first 45 was total newc and thats a fact. we should have been 2 up and the tie should have been dead. after the break it was the usual cup story, the longer the game went on the more stoke fancied themselves and they really came into it. i do not think stoke will win the replay for an instant. besides this is a newc blog not a stoke blog.

stoke should have won that game, simple.

I’ve said it before but I agree with the lacking midfield. Solano, Parker and Dyer offered much more steel and creativity, and perhaps these new defenders are better than we think, but come under attack far too much as the ball just goes right past our midfield.

It had all the ingredients of a classic FA cup match. A lower team high on confidence, at home & playing a biggish team from the top flight with zero confidence & nervous fans. Despite the lack of goals from either team, I don’t think we were let down… it was a good game.
In Newcastle’s current climate (built by the press), this was a match that regardless of the result, we could never win:
1) 5-0 win, so what, we’re the higher team & it was to be expected.
2) 1-0 win, we scraped through.
3) 0-0/1-1, should have done better.
4) 1-0 loss, Sam’s not good enough.
I personally am happy with the 4th round draw (assuming we get through), at least if we win that on score… we can actually win.

Well what’s really going on?
Newcastle have not got the depth we use to have last season after selling the likes of Parker, Dyer, and Bowyer, interesting that our midfield seems to be the issue rather than defence this campaign, our midfield is not strong and we seem to give away height compare to other teams, and also we give away possession far to easily which put our back four under pressure.
I put it to you, is our new owner really interested in building a team or is he just a corporate raider waiting to clean up the crap that Newcastle got into and then on sell for a tidy profit.
It’s interesting that if he was interested in building the club why more money has been released, or why they haven’t employed someone like David Dein as a consultant (while he waits for Arsenal to change ownership). The players purchased to me apart from Barton (even now it looks like he’s going away for a period unless he gets lucky),look like a second tier of players when a manager has been told he has no money to spend or a manger waiting to be replaced.
Ashley may be wealthy but really is he looking to build Newcastle in a top four contender or in it for profit

Newcastle are a great club and Big Sam is a class act. From an outsiders perspective he just needs a bit longer to get things on track and bring in a few quality players. As a Stoke fan living in Australia this was the best I have seen Stoke play in the 4 televised games broadcast live down under. You can only imagine then how awful the other games have been and yet we are 4th in the league. It just proves their is a huge divide between the 2 divisions. I would love to see Sam take your team into the top 4 next season and reward the loyal supporters who always turn up win, lose or draw. You have got the best supporters in the country so don’t lose faith.

We’re lucky who get another chance to advance in the cup. No doubt about that Stoke had the biggest chances in the first match.
Now it’s up to Sam and The Lads to show the world what happened at Brittania Stadium was an accident.
Howay The Lads!

After the game I quickly decided that this result was a relief and not a disappointment.
A relief. To draw at Stoke. Excellent. Let the good times role.
I’m really not sure what to think anymore. Is this as shit as we can get? Can we get shiter? Can things get worse???
I’ve re-assessed my hopes for the season, and I’ll just be happy if Newcastle are in the premiership next season.

the game was pretty good really, typical cup stuff! we had the first, they had the second. we had 60% possession though. it would have been nice to finish them off and really we could have killed the game in the first half if we had converted a couple. still, it could have been worse, we could have been out like everton and a few other prem teams. i have to laugh at some of the negative crap we hear from our’so-called’ supporters. i do not hear anyone slagging off moyes or liverpool, so why do we get it? i dont mind so much from all the outsiders but us true toon have to sing the same tune and be united. it;ll come good, we need to use our common sense and also have some bloody patience with the new regime. it is no good just slagging everyone off and sacking everyone constantly. so, on reflection, a draw is fair and i think we will do em on the home leg!
