Would you take Robert back?
By N.O On Sat 28 Oct 2006 |
Laurent Robert has been quoted saying he’d love to come back to Newcastle United, apparently the Frenchman said:
“When I think of my time at Newcastle, I can think of only one word - fantastic.
“I really loved my time there as I enjoyed English football and I’d love to come back if Mr Shepherd would have me.
“There was only one reason why I left Newcastle and that was Graeme Souness.”

But he did not have his chance under Souness! 1st leg against Sporting, sets up Shearer’s goal, 2nd leg, Souness didn’t play him, we lost that game, then he hardly got a chance after that!
I hope he does come back, but I can’t see it, just as long as we get 2 defenders and hopefully another striker or two!

Pants. Rare glimmers of hope should always be overridden by commonsense. He had his chance.

Deffo TAKE HIM back!! Why are there people saying no, he was rubbish and moaned on! Yes ok he did have the odd game where he looked lazy, but I have watched my DVD’s of the guy playing for us and he is brilliant! The amount of goals he set up during the seasons he was here speaks for itself and not forgetting his awesome goals he scored for us too, the free kicks aswell! We need him back and as Shearer has said before, he isn’t one of those guys that will get back all the time, like a Beckham or a Giggs, and you ‘could’ see him trying under Souness even though he hardly played when he was there.
But if he was very good at what he did, then I be happy for him to do that without getting back, as there are defenders and other players to do that on the pitch for him! He did very well for us and I thought he was a good player. It was the papers that got him into trouble printing something he said (and the papers twisted it) then publishing it on night before the UEFA Cup game! He was right with what he had said anyways, we were worse off then than the season before, any idiot could see that, and look where we are today!! WE NEED him and I hope we get him back, he loves the Toon and the fans and the whole area!

Robert does have a fierce shot on him when he wants (something mostly lacking at the Toon so far this season) BUT he would probably only be useful as a squad player/playing cameo roles. I don’t think he’d want or put up with that. When he moaned again, we’d want rid of him (again).
Would ideally like us to sign at least one player for each of defence, midfield and attack. In an ideal world, we’d stump up a big offer for both Rossi and O’Shea (p.s - if Owen had been playing yesterday, I think it’s safe to say we would have won clearly)

I’d defo take him back, fantastic player, he can be quiet all game then pop up with something magical, Robert back!

I thinks Mr Robert has finally cracked.
He has never shown anything but contempt for the club, players and fans.
His skills don’t match his mouth
He is plainly just not good enough.
Having said that I expect to see him back in January.

I know he was frustrating, wouldnt track back etc. But he was one player who could turn a game around if he chose to. I think Zog has more potential but I would have him back on a free.

No way, we do not need another left sided player. Plus Robert had one good game in five, and we need better than that, we need at least a striker and 2 defenders to turn this around

Agree absolutely with Nostradamus - multitude of players that can play there, Robert comes with a plane-load of baggage, moody, looks as though he can’t be bothered half the time. Yes he’s scored a few great goals for us, but wouldn’t take him back.

No thanks - I remember him leaving the pich half naked and we had never sold him to anyone at that time - it showed all us TOON fans that his heart was not in the club - and it wasnt the first time he expressed his fealings in that way - he was too lazy in tracking back - he thought it was not part of his job - Duff and N’Zogbia do more than he ever done - on his day he could have 50,000 chearing him - but more often have 50,000 going crazy because of his lack of commitment. But I do think we miss his set pieces in games - that was his only plus I could credit him with.

No no no no no…………. Our problems are in our defence and finishing. Robert couldn’t defend and hated trying. His finishing was great when he was in the mood, but how often was that?
With all his skill he could have been the best player in the world in his position, but sadly in these parts he will always be remembered as an under-acheiver.

NO WAY!
He’s not the sort of player Newcastle needs. We need to harden up our defense first, there’s too much “squeaky bum time”. How long has it been since a quality defender was signed by this club?

Where is he now? No thanks. He was good in his first 2 seasons if not inconsistent and he was average in his final 2. We now have Duff and N’Zogbia who are both better than the Frenchman.

No thanks, he’s not really all that good to be honest. Plus, N’Zogbia > Robert & Duff > Robert.

On his day, there is rarely better talents in terms of crossing, running at defenders and set pieces than Laurent Robert. Unfortunately we rarely saw this side of Robert.

Not a chance. Even though he did mainly moan about GS he also hit out at the fans every now and again.
And with the Zog and Duff, as well as the rest of our midfield, who needs him?

Definitely take him back. He was frustrating and at times was awful, but on his day he was the best player we had and one of the best in the league. He won us countless matches and as Sir Bobby said “Laurent and Nobby are like a beautifully balanced, two winged bird”. Don’t start him, Duff and N’Zogbia deserve their place, but if we’re losing I can’t think of anyone better to come on and spice things up. He’s the creativity we don’t have at the moment and that’s why we can’t score…

I wouldn’t have him back we’ve got duff, the zog, pattison, o’ brien and milner who can all play there.
