N-O Panel: Post Match Blackburn (a)
By Jonny Hall On Sun 2 Dec 2007 |
Despite a 300% improvement on the Liverpool game last week, Newcastle fell to defeat at Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon. Despite being in control for alot of the game, the Magpies fell down to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Blackburn. Oba Martins had given the Toon the lead just after half time. We got the panel’s reaction…
Rich
“After a good response from Sam Allardyce and his charges, we still left an enthralling encounter at Ewood Park empty handed. I, for one, have found it difficult to be too disheartened by the 3-1 loss on Saturday, especially considering the performance we put in against a decent Blackburn side. It was a true blood and thunder affair and anyone could have won it, but the injury problems in our defence during the game made taking anything from proceedings a step too far.
The injury situation would be funny if it wasn’t so sad (and regular), as at 5pm yesterday we stood with one fit centre-half out of five and with our only other option there leaving the field looking somewhat knackered as well – after Carr’s lazyitis had struck again, of course. Habib Beye again looked as good as anybody in black and white, which is a real credit to the attitude and application of our new Senegalese defender.
Aside from that, tactically it was all a much of a muchness. We didn’t seem to be playing with too much nouse or guile and the gameplan was undoubtedly built on effort, effort and more effort. Not a lot of flair and not a lot of end product means nothing new to us pained supporters, but at least the basics had returned. We never ducked out of a tackle, we matched their work-rate and we could have quite easily won the game ourselves.
If we can take the same application into St. James’ Park on Wednesday night we should have enough about us to get amongst Arsenal and we could even cause an upset. Whether we can play in a similar way remains to be seen, but one thing is a given: the lads will be nowhere near as well supported as they were by our traveling hordes this weekend. The fans, as is often the case, were the true stars in this fixture.
Men (and women) of the Match: All of those who sang their hearts out in the Darwen End (not that our players were that bad, mind!).”
Tom
“So there we have it, yet another defeat.
Allardyce has one more chance to salvage his tenure, if press reports are to be relieved. Compared to last week, this week was an improvement, but that doesn’t say a lot really. Keep on going the way we are for much longer and I can see us getting into trouble.
Sloppy tactics were once again to blame for our latest loss. Allardyce, the buck stops with you, because the players are good enough. Milner struggled once again out of position, though Smith was better in his natural role.
Newcastle United and Sam Allardyce are not the right match. Obviously, Allardyce is a good manager - his record with Bolton shows that. While he is well suited to getting the most out of limited resources, he does not suit a club with the attacking ethos, large fanbase and ambition that Newcastle has.”
Jonny Hall
“Can Sam Allardyce do any right these days? It seems like everything is against him at the minute.
Wow! What an improvement on the Liverpool game. The players showed alot of commitment and we went for it, we really did. The attacking football was good, the defending was shady but acceptable and then we took the lead. We looked like we could actually nick it.
Then it happened again. We fell apart. Two goals from Blackburn and suddenly they’re ahead before Tugay finished it off, and United were back to old ways.
What happened? I don’t know. We’re not a team at the moment, we’re not even 11 individuals, they’re just a bunch of people on a pitch together having a kick about. Is it the managers fault? I don’t know but I do know that Allardyce keeps chopping and changing and it isn’t working.
We need 4-4-2, two PROPER wingers in midfield with a flat back four that remains constant and doesn’t change, then we have a chance of succeeding. Until then anything could happen.
MAN OF THE MATCH: The fans. Absolutely amazing! So much better than the Liverpool game, they did the Toon proud and I hope there’s 52,000 of them on Wednesday.”
Join us in the next few days for the build-up to the Arsenal game. Hopefully things can get better…

Frankly speaking, I was quite surprise abt Big Sam getting the chop if Newcastle lose to Arsenal.I’m not a real fan of BS but i really want to give the lad a chance, at least for 2 seasons.I’m truly happy with the team’s performance against Blackburn.Obvious improvements compared to the last 2 games.
We move the ball faster, a lot of off the ball movement, one-twos, but it just seems that we were unlucky to finish off the game. At least big Sam got something right by playing Smith upfront instead of his usual RW. All he needs to realise, is to play Milner on the right and N’Zogbia on the left, and mind you, that’s left wing..All we need now is creativity from the middle, somebody that can provide that killer pass, deft thru ball, no look pass. The person closest to that might be Emre but he’s not playing that often. All we have in middle are “enforcers”, tough tackling players…Butt,JB,Smith…hopefully come January, BS will get someone with flair and vision to complete the puzzle and not another defender as reported.
Hopefully, BS can change the tide for the better soon and if not, give the fella a break and support him thru his darkest hours..instead of calling for his head.

I completely agree with Geordie Steve the club has been rotten for many years and sacking Sam will achieve nothing as painful as it has been to watch we must jump off this merry go round of sacking managers which has proved to achieve nothing, although Sam has done himself no favours with his team selections
We must get behind the team and give them a license not to be scared of playing football cos anyone who plays football knows you play your best when you enjoy it.

Im basically fed up. i want to blame the manager but I cant. I want to blame the players but I cant. is it our fault as newcastle fans for expecting to much? I dont know. since bobby weve dun absolutely nowt, apart from a decent fa and uefa cup run under souness, which was more luck of the draw than anything. our squad has the fourth biggest wage bill in premier league. its bigger than arsenals! duff-60k carr-40k babayaro-40k.WHAT???we are still paying off deals for hugo viana, luque and boumsong. the club in one sense was great, backed managers, spent big, but in another sense it has been rotting for a while. stupid purchases, hiring wrong staff. The club needs a total overhaul, there are serious problems when a club like newcastle hasnt won anything for decades. allardyce? whats the point in sacking him? whose out there? mourinho? hiddink? capello? houllier? none of them would come..thats how sad it has become. we need to give him a season, let him brimg some more players in in january, and take it from there. UNITED TILL I DIE

I don’t understand why everyone has it in for Sam.
We’re not in a relegation fight yet, when it happens then we can panic, but until then give him a chance. He will get it right if he keeps going. With everyone on his back it just gets harder.
If anyone remembers, Bolton went through the same thing with everyone calling for his head back then. He turned them around to a quality finish… People are quick to forget
Do what fans are supposed to do and cheer. At the end of the day we don’t do his job so lets just get up and get behind the team…

Big Sam was the best manager we ever had at Bolton, and in my humble opinion will one day be up with the Fergies and Wengers. Sam is not the problem at Newcastle, it is the long term mess of a club he inherited and the fickle geordie (you don’t know what you’re doing chants) fans who instantly expect it all on a plate without giving the man a half decent chance.
It took time for Sam to work the miracles he achieved at Bolton. Things might not be going too well at Newcastle at the moment but give Sam the support from the stands, get off his back, and I am sure he will turn things around and turn Newcastle into a top four club given time.

A good show from the fans and I didn’t think we were as bad as the 3-1 score line suggets.

i think unless sam allardyce can change his formation, else newcastle may be fighting for relegation. Newcastle is a big team with great fans, he cant expect bolton formation to work for newcastle.Allardyce made the biggest mistake for selling solano and antonie sibieski. he shouldnt have. he have to use a good formation that is gonna suit martins, he should forget abt owen now. if sam can use martins and ameobi, trust me is gonna be great. viduka is pld he cant play 9o mins. viduka shd be use as sub. I dont know aw allardyce use his head. i think he needs PA. someone who is as reasonable like mourinho, not someone like souness. Allardyce is even more worser than roeder. newcastle never lost at home against pompy during roeder’s time. HIS A BIG SHAME.

I think you’ll find David Bentley was Man Of The Match.
