While Bahrain is only a fairly small island off the coast of Saudi Arabia they are crazy about their football here. Almost every day for the last 6 weeks, sometime during the day I have found myself discussing the merits of 4-4-2 over 4-5-1 with Mohammed, the office runner. As with many people of a similar age born in the region, Mohammed and education were never introduced to each other, as a result his English is extremely poor.

So the grandest sporting spectacle of all is finally over with the most tainted of footballing nations being crowned as world champions, and attentions can be happily switched back to concerns more close to the heart: that of club football.
New Era, New Leader

With Shearer gone Wor Glenn has opted for Scott Parker to replace the great man as Club Captain with Shay Vice Captain. Speaking to the official site Roeder said:
“I had a decision to make about appointing a new skipper after the retirement of Alan Shearer and it’s one I gave an awful lot of thought and consideration to.
“In Scott and Shay I found myself fortunate to have two outstanding candidates for a difficult role in replacing a Geordie legend like Alan who was such a magnificent skipper for this club.
“I’ve been captain of this club myself in the past and I know what a huge honour it is. Scott and Shay have all the qualities I look for in a leader and there were so many reasons why either man could have been given the job.
“However, Shay’s position as a goalkeeper came into it obviously, while Scott as a central midfielder is more in touch with the whole side.
“But if for any reason we are without Scott then Shay will get the job. He captained the side for the last three games of the season and also kept three clean sheets in that time.”
Meanwhile Parker had this to say:
“Being asked to become the new captain of Newcastle United is without doubt the greatest honour of my career.
“It’s an absolute privilege to take over the skipper’s armband from Alan Shearer and lead out the side. Alan was a fantastic servant for the club and I am thrilled to follow in his footsteps.
“As the manager said, there were outstanding candidates for the job in the dressing room and I am honoured that he has chosen me for the position.
“But it’s also great to have the support of Shay Given as a vice-captain and the rest of the lads in the dressing room.
“I had a few games as captain last season and really enjoyed them. After missing the end of last season with illness I was already looking forward to the new term and getting back out on the pitch anyway, but to be doing so as captain is brilliant.”
