Your Shout: Newcastle 2-1 Celta Vigo - Have Your Say - Write In
By N.O On Fri 24 Nov 2006 |
Goals in either half from Antoine Sibierski and Steven Taylor saw Newcastle recover from a first-half Nestor Cannobio goal to seal safe passage into the knockout stages of the Eufa Cup.
What do you think of Newcastle’s impeccable European record this season? Is Europe an unnecessary distraction given current domestic difficulties? Where should Newcastle’s priorities lie? Have your say.

Very impressed with the effort Luque put into the 90 mins.Decent delivery from the corners but looked as if he was trying too hard at times!Deserves a regular run now that Duff is out in my opinion.
Solano was excellent as a right back,bin Carr and stick Solano in there ’till the end of the season.
Ramage needs to be played as a C.H the guy should be given a medal for playing as a left back for so many games.
Taylor!just see what that goal meant to him,more guys like that needed to play for the shirt.
Decent performance by the toon but still lacking that certain’Zip’.

Writing what I did led me to thinking about what line up I would play on Sunday, bearing in mind our current fixture pile up.
I’d go with a 4-4-2
GK = Given
DL = Bramble
DC = Ramage
DC = Taylor
DR = Solano
ML = N’Zogbia
MC = Dyer
MC = Parker
MR = Milner
FC = Martins
FC = Rossi
If we avoid picking up any injuries, ideally I’d like to see Emre / Luque / Sibierski brought on from the bench at some point between 55-75 mins to replace Dyer / Martins / Rossi.
Most importantly, Dyer/Luque/Martins must play some but not the entire match for a combination of fitness & confidence improvement.
Common Freddy this team stuff is easy, sack Roeder & hire me instead!

Overall:
I was pleased with the win but I was left feeling flat from the lack of…. I’m not sure what the game was lacking, but it was.
The Players:
Shay didn’t have a lot to do, except take goal kicks due to the opposition’s number of long range efforts.
Solano did well at right-back & that could extend his career a year or so maybe. I feel that between Solano & Taylor we’re fine at right-back & can flog Carr in January hopefully (to be replaced with a solid centre-back). I do like Taylor when he plays on the right (but like last night, he does fine in the middle too).
Ramage has to PLAY IN THE CENTRE!!! Ramage would be my 1st name in defence on the team sheet (apart from Shay) & would be the steady rock in the middle. No fancy stuff required from a centre-back thank you very much.
Bramble, again I’d like to see tried at left back. Got away with a couple of ‘Bramble patches’ early on & grew as the game progressed.
Butt didn’t have his best game, I felt he was left with to much to do against Celta Vigo’s more solid midfield & resulted in him not actually doing much as they always had other options, taking him right out of the game. Butt being overrun was partly I thought because N’Zogbia was too lightweight, but as he was playing out of position & I’m not going to hold that against him (he’s doing as he’s told). Thought he should have been on the wing to enable Luque to play up front. The result was both playing quite poorly because they were both out of their natural positions. (Glen that could have been easily avoided).
Emre was at fault for the 1st goal but tried hard for the rest of the match to make up for it, did ok overall.
Milner had a quite start to the game (like most everyone except the defence) & looked like he wasn’t in the right frame of mind. Once they had scored, all that changed & along with Sibierski was a bit of a highlight. I hope we keep him, if we don’t it will hurt NUFC a lot more then it will hurt his career.
Sibierski was my Man of the Match, more for his continued ‘Parker like’ work ethic then his good goal or anything special he might have done. I do feel that he would have enjoyed the company of another striker (Luque on this occasion) up there with him. It must be depressing to put your body up for every ball, work your guts out to get the flick on etc, only for the ball to fall to the opposition defenders time & time again due to lack of support.
Subs Parker/Martins, did well without needing really to do much, losing the match was no longer a realistic result by the time they were introduced.
Summary:
Another 3 points & qualification for the last 32 in the UEFA cup, well done Glen & the boys.
This will no doubt mean a few players being rested next Thursday & maybe a few debuts being handed out. I predict that both Luque/Butt will be “rested” by Roeder on Sunday so they can again play in a less important European match. Not necessarily a bad thing for Butt, but Luque could do with at least a 30 minute appearance against Pompey. I would maybe start with Dyer & swap him for Luque.

Great turn around.
Parker & Martins gave us some much needed thrust in the middle of the park. It had gone stagnant as Vigo were looking to close the game down and settle for a point.
Delighted that Taylor got his first goal, and what timing it was!
I am glad that Antoine “Super Sib”ierski is proving those doubters who questioned his arrival wrong!

Well, good game felt abit sorry for luque after he slipped and missed the first shot but well done to him he may fill the gap for Duff and maybe start challenging him. Stick with the formation but a slection dilema with the centres i.e being Zoggy emre. Butt i struggle to see him anything more than a backup but has been showing heart latley. Milner on the right but luques the man for me give him a chance glenn please

I don’t really like 4 5 1 with Sib upfront unless we are are playing away and defensively.
I’d rather see Martins & Luque with 3 attacking midfielders anchored by scotty. My choice at present would be 3 from Dyer, Emre, Zog & Milner.
Away by all means use Sib, & Butt, with one of the above 3,

Luque - definitely lack of confident and matches, so i run of games in the premiership would be the ans(heard duff is injured ..so he going to have his chance)
Zogbia - average last nite, he overplayed sometimes…i think his best position would still be left winger…
milner - world class crosses…definitely our 1st choice for right winger for the season
bramble - done well but still made some mistakes…
sibierski - good player but i think we could score more if we play 4-4-2, with sibierski and martins both playing together up front

Couple of mentions -
Nobby - good at right back, solid in defence (well as solid as carr anyway) and helped build from the back. Other opposition may try to exploit him aerially though
Milner - full of running and his final ball has really improved. Gave Nobby plenty of help too.
Luque - plenty of effort but it wasnt quite happening probably due to lack of match time and confidence, kept looking for the ball and tried to make it happen though. Great corner. Deserves some time against Pompy to find his feet - probably wont get it though
Sib - bargain basement buy of the season
Nice to have a bit of selection problem in attack for sunday though - who to play from Sib, Martins, Dyer & Luque

We all know he’ll be dropped ASAP but I genuinely feel sorry for Luque. He worked hard and supplied a good corner for the second goal. With a bit of confidence I believe Luque could be very good! Solano really impressed at right back. Just the left to sort out now!

great stuff. why aren’t we beating prem teams efficiently. give luque the chance to justify his pricetag, after a bad start to the prem, (having more games played than points!) hopefully the team will build on this, in working hard and perservering in keeping clean sheets and beating team systematically.

A good all-round performance from the lads, great work ethic. It was good to see Emre putting the effort in, Milner was a constant threat, Nobby looked good at right back(maybe there against pompy), Overall the back line did well and looked quite comfortable. I think Zog looked a bit uncomfortable and kept drifting wide, Luque was very nervous, But you cant blame him really, He tracked back well and kept looking for the ball,Quality corner for the second goal. I still dont think he is a winger more a second striker. I would like to see him against pompy but I think Zog will get the nod. Its going to be 4-5-1 with Martins on his todd and Dyer playing an advanced role.
A special mention to Sib who ran his knackers off and played a position which he admits isnt his favaoured one and scored a vital goal.

While we have Butt in the first team,we have got some great result finally.Parker or Emre can be concentrated on attracking,it made the mid-field balance.Luque played so well while he had got his chance at first team.But I do afarid he will be on bench on weekend again.Steven should get a regular first team with Barmble in the future.
go on geordies~!

Fantastic. They dug their heels in and got what they deserved. Should give Luque an extended run in the league. So what if he doesn’t run the length of the field when he scores as long as he does.

We are playing well in Europe but at the moment so is every English club. I can see us beating all these great clubs then going down to blackburn.
We need to get the cooler climate peoples. We keep signing these players from hot climates who love to chill and then we wondering why, when they are running around ands it freezing friggin cold, they injure themselves or cant play. We need an eskimo international and he’ll be friggin fantastic!

3 wins from 3 games. We just need this kind of record in the premiership now.

Good result, reasonable performance. Frustrating at times.
We MUST work out a system that suits Oba. He’s lost up front without the right sort of attacking build-up midfield support. He’s quality, and we all know it, but he’s not from the same mould as Shearer.
I think Luque deserves a proper chance, but can’t help noticing what I see every time he plays…zero effort or determination - so I can’t make up my mind if we should persevere with him or get rid as a lost cause.
Omar … what are you talking about? - Duff is a top drawer player. Are you surprised we aren’t getting the best out of him? We are in a mess and we need stability. He’ll come good and he’ll be a cornerstone of our team if we get things on an even keel. He has pledged committment to NUFC and thats what we need from our team right now.
Jury out on Titus (disaster with fantastic potential), Dyer isn’t worth his massive wages for the few performances we get, Emre is worth his place because he is passionate about his performance and the result. Taylor is a real star and will be a great defender for years to come. Scotty will be a good captain and he is suffering from the same instability as is the club.
Milner and N’Zogbia will develop with the team. Stick with them.
We must accept this season as one of consolidation of all areas. Defense, midfield, attack and management. It’s bloody infuriating, but we must accept it. What’s the alternative? Change everyone again? Oh yes…that’ll work.

Solano for right back is the way to go!
Well done lads! Good goal from Taylor and I hope Luque gets a proper run in the team.

agreed, well done lads
i like the team that played tonight, it looks good and quite balanced except for ramage stuck out on left but he is pretty solid there so no real harm!
give luque a more consistent run in the team and i strongly believe he will show his undoubted class sooner rather then later!
awful 5ive ’save freddy’ propaganda, i wonder how many cookies it took to get john barnes on side?

very nice peformence from the lads,lightend up what was actually a boring game,loved to see luque playing full 90 min,and assisting a goal,also liked to see sibreski and taylor head their way to the score sheet.
overall,it proves that some players will perform nicley once given a chance,and the likes of babayaro,duff,rossi,ameobi,and espcially carr should be dropped from the team
really hope the boosts our confidence for the pompy game,and great the see sibreski,n’zogbia,luque all getting the starts they deserve
