Your Shout: Arsenal 1-1 NUFC - Have Your Say - Write In
By N.O On Sat 18 Nov 2006 |
Newcastle earned a draw at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon against an on-form Arsenal. The 1-1 scoreline allowed the Magpies to climb out of the relegation zone ahead of Sheffield United who lost today. There appears to be more injury woe however with Craig Moore taken off near the end with a suspected hamstring problem. Could our squad get anymore paper thin?
As ever here at N.O we want your views so write in to HAVE YOUR SAY and get your views published.
Tactically did Roeder get it spot on? Was his team selection right? Who was your star man for United? Should we have won? Let us know using the contact form below.
Thanks

With Craig Moore out it looks like the ideal opportunity for Paul Huntington to stake a claim. I agree with the critism of Titus Bramble but I feel he lacks only one thing, a brain. He has good aerial ability, two good feet that can produce a good pass and he is a good tackler. I would also give Luque one last chance to show he deserves to stay but Roeder seems defiant in not involving him. An alternative is give youth a chance with young Andy Carroll performing really well in the reserves. Lastly the Toon will not go down!

We may not have the best Back 4 in the prem but with Shay in Goal & Scotty in front they should not be too disasterous. Pick em & stick with em is my motto & the so far Taylor, Moore, bramble & ramage have looked the best combo.
I thing we should pick 3 out & out attcking midfielders with a licence to play flowing football and create chances for Martins & Owen, OK Luque in place of Owens for the moment. IMHO those 3 should be Dyer, Emre & Zog, although Duff on song would be in there.
However away I think we need to be more defensive, and playing 2 more defensive midfielders eg Butt & Duff alongside Scotty makes sense. The only question then is do we play a big fromt man eg Sib or an extra midfielder, and for me that decision depends on the opposition. Away I’m happy for a clean sheet, or a draw in games like Ars away.
Anyway. That’s my thoughts.

Guys, I think it’s pretty clear why everyone is so negative (look at our position and the way we’ve played) and personally I think the fans have every right to be (ibid). It’s now up to the manager to change this situation round and give the fans what they deserve. He’s the one who got us into this position and if he can get us out of it then respect and we eat humble pie. If not, then he needs to understand that fans will be negative and that he will come under much criticism.

I feel that people can be really negative at times! I think that to battle our way out of London with an away point is excellent. I would be really happy if we can start winning at home, but its a start. Instead of saying things like papering over the cracks, lets get behind the lads for putting in a good shift and double the backing to claim our next three points against Portsmouth. Half full or half empty - you decide!

Well done lads.

I dont think anyone is taking away the achievement of what the lads did on Saturday but we need to be realistic here dont we. We sit 4th bottom of the league having scored hardly any goals and putting in dour performances. All I can say is lets look at what happens in the next 4 or 5 games. Its safe to say Luque isnt going to get anywhere near the first team never mind the starting line up and thats Rodents decision so he will stand or fall by that. What I do want to see is attacking football, slick passing and movement, desire and pace, considering we will have Dyer back and looking impressive, Martins back combined with the so far uninspiring Duff(hopefully he will start to kick on),Nzogbia,Emre,Solano,Milner we should be putting the shits up the opposition defence, yeah we may ship a few but there must be a lot of goals in our team given the names above.
I am willing to give Rodent the benafit of the next five games(including Europe) before I write another negative comment about him or his tactics/selections or Luque.
prove us all wrong Mr Manager

I dont get this negativity. People saying being 4th from bottom is unacceptable and that throwing 9 players behind the ball anyone can get a point. I agree with the first point, but when you’re playing away to Arsenal and come away with a point then what’s there to moan about, we had the oppurtunity to move up a few places and out of the bottom 3, and we have, so stop whinging. Second of all, utter bollocks, you can throw 11 players behind the ball and still lose against arsenal, who really thought we’d draw 1-1? Didn’t think so.

Re some of the comments:
Surely it is not a lucky point, more a well earned one. We’ve won twice at Arsenal since being in the prem, otherwise generally being shown the way home with our tails between our legs…..
I don’t think Luque has ever been rated by Barca. They ditched him at nineteen as they didn’t think he would make the grade. He has hankered after a move back ever since, I suspect to prove a point as much as anything else.
With the line ups Roeder has picked this season, I have rarely been able to fault his tactics. On a different point, I certainly haven’t agreed with some of his line ups !
Maybe Luque should have been given more of a chance; too much patience has definately been shown with some non performers in the team. Some of the substitutions have also seemed to be strange. We all know the squad is very small and notably weak in some areas. Roeder and FS need to carry the can on that one.
The most surprising asepect to selections has been the Taylor - Moore - Bumble - Ramage back line. The two games in which they have played they have put in the most ballsy performances in defence when needed, in diffcult games and away from home.
Ramage will never be a left back and the line contains Bramble who arguably will never make a fooballer, yet it has worked. It probably reflects how bad Carr and Babayaro are. If Moore is out next week, given the injury situation I’d like to see a defense of
Taylor - Ramage - Huntington - Duff or Bramble
I would also consider Bramble at left back. He can’t be any more awkward than Ramage at LB and at least he is left footed.
The underperformers and shirkers just cannot be allowed a way back into the team at this point, irrespective how thin the squad is, even if it appears we are playing people “out of position”. We are going to have to have the stomach for a fight in every game home and away till the end of the season. We’re far from being out of the woods yet.

I think the result itself was good, on the positive side we didnt end up losing by the 2-0, 3-0 many had predicted prior to the match. Nice to see kieron dyer back firing on all cylinders. In my opinion i feel that luque should be given an extended run in the team, then and only then can we make up our minds that he does not belong at SJP. How about playing him on the left wing - his favoured position, as duff doesnt seem to be turning out the preformances he did at chelsea and even blackburn before that

Undoubtedly a great point, especially against the premiership’s ‘form team’. I do however fear that this performance may just be papering over the cracks, affording Roeder more time to cement our place in the bottom three and allowing him to use his massive name to attract real quality to the club in the January sales. For once though, he seemed to get his tactics right although this could be a fluke; don’t forget, Souness still managed a similar feat last season and we were just as poo until he went. Remember, one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
Two questions: One- Where was Luque again? One can only assume a player rated by Barca’ cannot impress the mighty Roeder.
Two- Why does Roeder insist on refering to himself in the third person? Fair enough if you’re a legend like Mohammed Ali or Stevie Wonder, but a manager who has taken three teams down? I ask you.

Football’s about defending as well as attacking, and today we defended well and did enough going forward to get something from the game. We could have committed more men forward and played right into Arsenal’s hands, but ever the pragmatist Roeder got his tactics right for this fixture.
But for one rash challenge from Taylor we’d probably have come away from the Emirates with all three points, and still the criticism pours in…. unbelievable.
NB - Given’s booking was a scandal.

Just like when we beat Arsenal at our place last year, I don’t think we can afford to be too precious about performances until we start getting points.
Did laugh at a Gunnerblog describing Arsenal as the most frustrating team in the world…..

Lucky point, Dont get carried away. We are 4th bottom which is totaly unacceptable, We beat Arsenal at home under Souness and that didnt make us a good team, neither does this. All this means is Roeder can stay for longer and continue with his lack of tactics, motivation and substandard management of our club. lets see what happens over the next four games, I doubt we will be clear of the bottom 5(hope im wrong). Its ok to raise your game against the big boys but when you cant beat shite teams at SJP something is sadly wrong

I can understand Omar’s feelings, but on the other hand I was prepared to regard anything less than a three-nil thrashing as acceptable, after what they did to Liverpool last week. Any point away from home is good, and at Arsenal it’s a bit of a bonus, particularly in a score draw. Good to see Dyer looking sharp, and we’re out of the bottom three - on goal difference, of all things.
Could have been worse!

1-1 away to a quality side like Arsenal is ALWAYS a good result. Right now we should take any kind of result and worry about the performance later. We are a month from Xmas and we just climbed out of the bottom three. Whether we like it our not, this season is now about survival first, and pretty football second.
Oh and a question to finish. I’m heading back home to Newcastle for Xmas (I live in Bournemouth). Getting tickets for the Watford game, but with Moore now added to the injury list…. should I bring my boots? ;-)

A draw against the odds is not bad at all. If Kieron Dyer stays fit he will help us create much more chances in the future. I believe Glenn Roeder did the best he could and got the formation right. You have to have a strong midfield to cope with Arsenal’s quality. I hope he still plays a 4-4-2 formation with Luque alongside Martins. The pair of them would do a good partnership and could grab the headlines in the next home matches against easier opposition.

Didnt like the peformence that much, anyone can field 9 players in the defence and scarp all the way throw the match for a point
i see no reason for joy (or at least being too happy about the match),we are newcastle united,we used the curse our luck in such games for not getting the full 3 points
arsenal today wasted two dozens of chances (24 shots i guess) we took 2 shots and scored 1,i don’t call that class but alot of luck,or a brilliant move by kieron dyer
otherwise,we just set back and recieved wave after wave of arsenal attacks, just like what souness did last season,we got away with something, but i am not quite sure the result will go along way in helping us,or at least kick-start our season
Hope i am wrong

A good performance reminiscent of the Palermo game, holding onto the ball when we had it, taking our chances and overall defending well. What do the two games have in common…No Stephen Carr, No Babayaro. Ramage struggled down the left a bit but thats not his fault, we all know he’s not a left back. In the midfield, Parker was strong, Butt was ok, Solano was great and then would be a bit slack with the passing. Dyer, very very very well played. Kept the ball supurbly, played into space and opened out our play. Martins was equally as good, I dont understand the commentators saying he looked like he didnt know where he was, his flicks, turns, leaps and passes were excellent today. Given as you would expect was very good aswell. Still think Roeder got lucky though, Arsenal had numerous chances and yet again Duff was clueless. Still no Luque, its obviously the end of his Newcastle career now unless someone gets injured.
