Who do you want as manager of Newcastle United?
By Richard Huggan On Sat 12 Jan 2008 |
Now that Harry Redknapp has said “no” to the job, he has been removed from the poll, so if you were one of the 48 who voted for him (out of over 1,100) then feel free to change your vote. Jurgen Klinsmann has also been removed, having agreed to take over at Bayen Munich from the beginning of next season, so again, if you were one of the 92 that voted for the German, feel free to change as well!

@Elaine
You really need to look into the circumstances under which Keegan left last time. It had nothing to do with leaving us in the lurch & everything to do with the future club launch as a PLC. Keegan was quite happy to serve out his contract at the time, but the chairman was not happy with that. So they agreed to part ways so NUFC had a definite manager in place over the summer. That choice for manager was KD, hardly a strange choice or leaving the club in the lurch.
Want to reconsider what you wrote, now you are more aware of the events at the time?
We’ll all be excited under Keegan, when was the last time you were excited by the footy we played?
Sent in on: January 18th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Keegan left Newcastle in the lurch when he was manager before; what’s to say he won’t do it again?
When the going gets rough, you need someone tough so the the man for the job just has to be no-nonsense ALAN SHEARER. He has the commitment, experience and heart to lead his beloved Newcastle to the top of the league.
Sent in on: January 18th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
why not give shearer a chance, mort says we need a manager with experience???????? then i ask him what experience does he or mike cashley have at running a football club, absolutely none.didnt stop them.
keegan had no experience 1st time round, what about van basten, dagliesh(liverpool days)klinsmann hughes coleman to name but a few
shearer knows the club inside out and is hugely respected in the football world and knows what the fans want
one thing is for sure,110% would be given to turn the fortunes of our club around not like the plonker who has just been sacked.
GIVE SHEARER A CHANCE AND BRING IN KEEGAN IN AN ADVISORY ROLE
the main thing missing from our beloved club is passion and that is a guarantee with those two
Sent in on: January 16th, 2008 at 5:30 am
Houllier would be ok but I wouldnt be too keen on Deschamp who is now in the running, Houllier has pulled out so they say. Mort sounds as if he and Ashley have decided on a foreign coach and thts great news but I just hope he has a proven track record. Does Deschamp have a proven track record?

Stuart Baxter is british and a very good tactiacian and manager.
Sent in on: January 14th, 2008 at 11:02 am
no way is dick advocaat going to become the next newcastle manager he just turned down the socceroos to stay with his club so there is no chance that he is now going to go and join newcastle!!!!
Sent in on: January 13th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
If an appointent isn’t made yet, I guess it’s hard to get any of the big names as Mourinho, Lippi etc. Then Keegan/Shearer turns up to be favourites. But another interesting alternative is previous Olympiacos manager Trond Sollied.
He would bring the entertaining football back to SJP.

What about Mowbray top scoring WBA from the northeast and a superb manager.
Sent in on: January 13th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I have it on good authority that former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat will be appointed early next week, to replace Sam Allardyce as Newcastle United manager.

another bad day at the office for the toon everyone at the moment is down and negative let mike ashley appoint a manager lets back him and lets get on with the job of salvaging some pride we are not down and out yet i am sick to death of so called supporters slagging newcastle off if you are not going to get behind the club then piss off and support someone else people need to forget the keegan days they have gone and will not return even with kk at the helm why supporters at newcastle live in the past we need to get over it and move on let mike ashley get a manager and lets go back to being the best supporters in the country so we got stuffed off man u it wasnt a suprise and was always going to happen if we could get 50000 supporters at home to make as much noise and support the team like the ones who go away then we might just get somewhere and bring some atmosphere back to st james park lets get used to the idea that we are not going to pick the manager mike ashley is and when he does lets stop moaning back him and go for it for the rest of the season les be positive and prove the pundits wrong who think we are down and out because we are not

Well well well. Ashley and Mort put all of their eggs in one basket and ended up with omelette on their faces!
Obviously a billionaire Sportswear man and a solicitor aren’t used to not getting everything they want, when they want it. Did they really think they would be able to wade in and take Redknapp after the way they unserimoniously axed Sam? You see, money can’t buy everything.
As someone in the press said recently .. if Ashley wants to make a success of Newcastle he needs to leave his enormous ego at the gate and realise that his money and reputation outside of the game doesn’t mean shit in the world of football.
I simply cannot believe that they would sack Allardyce after such a short time with no-one lined up to take over. What the hell were they thinking?
Big games coming up, no-one at the helm and transfer window time ticking away. We desperately need to strengthen but any signings a managerless club make is only going to make any potential manager think ‘how much say am i actually going to have?’.
Its a mess, and i’m not sure Ashley and Mort are running things any differently to fat Fred. I certainly won’t be able to believe a single word Mort says after his public backing of Sam Allardyce only a few weeks ago!
Sent in on: January 13th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Jose Mourinho is the man to take the toon back to the top, we need to shell out and get him, will save in the long run with alot less money wasted on unproductive signing, like the 100m spent in the last few years. he wants the return to the English league and no better place that with the toon.
Sent in on: January 12th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
..Face facts the only team that can save the Toon is MR KEVIN KEEGAN with ALAN SHEARER as his assistant. Just finished listening to to match with a tear in my eye. Fuckin sick cos i know it probably won’t happen? ..failing that Van Gaal would get the vote to do the job for me.
Sent in on: January 12th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
doesnt matter to be honest! The next manager will be sack in few months time if keep on booing the players/manager.

This is a response to Andy Gray’s story avaiable at
https://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_3038871,00.html
Andy I’m sorry your wrong to say all the Newcastle fans want is Shearer as boss. Where did this assessment come from? A few people on the streets? If your going to make such an assumption why not get a broad sample of opinion like available at
https://nufcblog.com/2008/01/11/newcastle-news/results-of-newcastle-man ager-poll-jose-on-top/
Mourinho is the clear fans choice with nearly 2,000 votes cast in total, followed by Hitzfeld who leaves Munich in the summer, and Keegan polled third, Shearer came 7th with only 55 votes, about 3% hardly a clamour for him to be boss is it?
I was surprised as anyone to see Sam sacked and would have accepted him until the end of the season, however we have played rubbish all season (Arsenal at home apart), tactics were to negative home and away, I’m not saying we are good enough to break into the top 4 but when your squad contains players such as Given, Beye, Cacapa, Enrique, Emre, Duff, Butt, Martins, Viduka, and Owen (all players who have performed admirably in the champions league) is it to much for the fans to expect Newcastle to go to Derby with a bit more ambition than to simply nullify and contain them? This was Sam’s attitude and mentality, which resulted in talented players having no confidence in their ability. His signings haven’t been that bad and I think the squad is stronger than when he took over in the summer. Beye for example was starting to show a bit of form, Enrique at left back was courted by Madrid and Barcelona and was quite a coup when we managed to sign him, but Sam would not play him, although he performed probably better than some of the other players (Geremi, Barton, Rozenhal, Smith). When Evra and Vidic 1st came to Man UTD they struggled but Fergie knew what they were capable of and stuck with them and instilled confidence in them, now they are regarded as two of the best in the league in their respective positions, if Sam showed confidence in Enrique I’m sure the same would happen with him.
The Toon fans will be patient if the manager learns from his mistakes, shows passion and appears to be moving the team forward, Bobby took 3seasons to qualify for Europe but the fans weren’t baying for his blood because he looked to be making progress. The Liverpool game at home was a disgrace and we should have got beat by 5 or 6. All season we have served up terrible performance one after another is it any wonder Ashley sacked him? Behind the scenes I think Sam did a decent job but on the pitch we have went backwards (despite arguably a better squad)
Who would I like as manager?
I would probably agree with the top 3 of the above poll, Mourinho doesn’t play Wenger type football, but he would understand the fans better, and instil passion and BE GIVEN TIME without doubt (we will accept an average style of play as long as the results are above average). Hitzfeld plays attacking football has a great pedigree, commands respect, will be free agent in the summer and has said in the past he would like to manage in the Premiership. Keegan might not want the hassle or to risk his hero status, but he might just see Newcastle as unfinished business and he was talking recently about the passion of toon fans and that you have to buy into their mentality, so why not? Other than these 3 why not Van Gaal? He’s at AZ (hardly a big club) and he will only be able to achieve so much as they are a selling club, sale of Koovermans to PSV in the summer illustrates this, and he did say last yr when Roeder was in charge that with the players we have we should be doing better he obviously thinks he could do better, so why not let him try. The new boss has to be a sign of intent, ambition and someone who will excite the fans, Redknapp a nice bloke but he wouldn’t of done this, but no matter who it is he will be supported, if he performs, so Andy before you churn out chants of Shearer, Shearer, do some research and try to gain some understanding of the issue, background, and facts. Is this not what effective journalism is about? I hope you read this and post a response but I doubt you will. (this has took 3 posts to fit everything in so look above for full argument)

It has to be Jurgen Klinsmann, while he was at Germany he did what we all say and want at our football club ‘attack attack attack’. He is charasmatic and yes he doesn’t have club management experience but hes worth a try. Thank god redknapp turned us down
Is anyone as worried as i am about the prospect of relegation? Wev got one hell of a tough set of fixtures coming up and the teams below us are catching up
Lets hope we can beat Manu this afternoon. If Viduka and Owen are bothered we cud nick a draw but ronaldo et all will surely rip us the shreads unless shay has one of his unbeatable games
Sent in on: January 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
As a Pompey fan (sorry guys) the issue for us is whether Redknapp accepts the Toon job or not. If you do take him, all I am worried about is his effect on some of the present players in our team. Without HR, Pompey could survive with any other decent manager. All you have to convince your sugar Daddy Cashley, is that success is not built overnight, and Redknapp won’t be any better than Sam. Could even be worse.
HR is a good MAN manager. Period. And players from other climes (his African boys) love him because he has a sort of cockney ‘charm’.
Don’t be deluded. His tactics are not always the best, and frankly his philosophy is “buy good players, and then let them play”. We rely on Jordan, Tony Adams, and African flair for our present position in the Prem.
But if you want to throw money away, then take him (HR). But in all fairness, you would be better off with a proven manager in his fifties, who is allowed to develop his own team, over A PERIOD OF TIME. With your money, success will happen, but never if you are going to throw it away every 9 months because of the naive whims of Cashley.
Keegan or Shearer, or both working in tandem might be a much better solution.

Pay the money tight Ass and get Wenger, the best and only choice. No Wenger = no trophies.
Sent in on: January 12th, 2008 at 4:42 am
I may be in the minority here, but I think Redknapp would do a good job up here. I liked him when he was at West Ham and he’s shown how to win in style at St James Park already hasn’t he?
He’s always had flair players. not old people from the scrap heap but young talent such as Lampard and Cole, both of whom would walk into our team.

I dont want redknapp as manager but reckon it’ll be him we end up with. If he is such a great manager why wasnt he considered for England? Lets face it, HR has had his fair shair of controversy so he would fit in well but i doubt his overall capabilites to manage Newcastle.
He may not even take the job yet but the big wages offered will probably sway the deal. There is only a couple of weeks of the transfer window left so any new manager will have to work fast or there will be the usual panic buys.
With Ashley’s cash he could buy any manager he wanted so why are Laurel and Hardy interested in another average manager? I dont understand the thinking behind the whole debacle but whoever comes in will have to deal with huge amounts of media coverage, high expectations from fans and manage the team.
Whoever does come in lets hope they can atleast give us a team worth watching again!

I really cant believe what most people are saying, Jose Mourinho!! U got to be joking right? He is without doubt one of the most defensive coaches in the world, 1-0 then shut up shop (with top class attacking players in his team). Even the Chelsea fans are enjoying their football now the ’special one’ has departed.
Im afraid the geordie public would run him outta town within 6 months with his lack of style/attacking policy.
Get real people, Harry is gonna be the manager and as far as im concerned he is by far the best man for the job. attacking football is just around the corner again people so for gods sake enjoy it!

what has alan shearer done to be a football manager?? that is the question i would like to ask,Kevin keegan he was useless last time.have you short memories,
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Shortlist:
1. Hiddink
2. Hitzfeld
3. Mourinho
4. Van Gaal
5. O’Neill
Definitely not Redknapp. Where is the Hitzfeld campaign this time around?!!!
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I hear that Harry Redknapp is coming to Tyneside…i would disagree. I have respect for him, with what he did in Portsmouth. But that like the same thing with Sam Allardyce and Bolton. Doing good at smaller clubs but doing not as good in bigger clubs. I think we should get someone like Mourinho or something. For real. Or Vicente Del Bosque? dunno. Luiz Felipe Scolari, someone with European experience, they could get players that have the potential to make us so good. Italian coaches would get good defenders i think…cause italy have really good defenders.
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Alan Shearer as manager and Sir Bobby Robson as his advisor like the thing with Ireland. Even though Ireland didn’t doo too well with Steve Staunton,
Shearer might do better….
if that doesn’t happen…Jose Mourinho would be the best one i guess…but would he come to Tyneside?
I hear Harry Redknapp is coming in…im not too sure about that…
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
The owner of Newcastle is a billionare for fuck sake! Why dosent Ashley just say to Wenger “heres 10 million a year in wages Arsene, and 200 million to sort this shit out” Ulikely, but thats what i would do if i was a fucking billionare!
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 10:45 am
I am wary of appointing Keegan a 2nd time.
Fielding 2+ strikers and 3+ creative midfielders with no defense may have cut it in the prem 10 years ago, but it WILL NOT WORK in the modern age of solid organisation. Any team worth anything will defend and absorb such an onslaught and beat you on the break these days.
We MUST NOT appoint Keegan on a wave of nostalgia. His recent record is poor.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved his team and style of play and I think he’s great.
But in the modern era his appointment WILL SIMPLY NOT WORK.
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 10:14 am
What we want and what we get are two different things idealy Jose head and shoulders above the lot but its not going to happen, i would give Jol or if we can wait sound out Hitzfeld, lots of reports saying Redknapp which leaves me uneasy to say the least.
Wish people would stop saying Keegan thats the past its proven he cannot handle pressure.
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 9:37 am
So it looks like Redknapp could be our next manager. I’m gutted but I suppose it could be worse it could have been Mclaren or Hughes. It also looks like Ashley will break the bank to get him. Many of us would like to have seen a top international coach and in few years his Royal Highness Alan Shearer could stroll in as 2ic. Very disappointed !!
Sent in on: January 11th, 2008 at 9:35 am
We are now hearing on Sky that Harry Rednapp is travelling to Newcastle ‘for discussions’. Whilst I have the utmost respect for Harry I do not think he is the man for the job. My reason for saying this is that he has had health problems in the past and for the job at Newcastle you would need someone in robust health. Second in line, apparently, is Mark Hughes? Not another of my favourites. However, if one of these, indeed anyone, who takes the job I hope above hope that they succeed. Another thing that worries me is all the money that will be spent. First we have the compensation for Sam and his team. Then whoever comes in will want a huge salary and he will bring with him, no doubt, his own backroom team. Then there will be a large sum put on the table for the new manager to bring in his own choice of players (balanced in part by the departure of unwanted ones no doubt). So how much are we talking about? £50 million? £70 million? I only hope that Mr. Ashley knows what he is doing. I can hear people shouting that I’m all for criticising - but who is my choice. Quite honestly I cannot think of anyone of sufficient stature who would want the job - depressing isn’t it!

Jose Mouriniho, best choice, but I was thinking is the clause in the chelsea departure legal? Im pretty sure there is European laws governing a persons right to work where is best for them, remember the Bosman ruling is that clause not along similar lines after all my employer cant stop me leaving to go to the competition. I say see a good solicitor and get Jose, just some random thoughts.
Otherwise Id be tempted to go with Bobby (at least we got in to europe) with an understudy, but please a winner not another well I got this smallish club quite far man

Jesus Christ - Does anyone want the job?
I would like to see a top coach in but personally will any top calibre coach touch us - I dont think so - so if it was down to me why not consider someone like Gordon Strachan - has managed a big club successfully (ok in Scotland)
but still that may qualify him ahead of Redknapp who hasn’t really done this.
apart from that - God Knows

I am 65 and have been a lifelong supporter. However, I feel that sacking a manager after only 8 months is a blunder. He should have at least been given a couple of years and I was not a fan of his. This manager merry go round is just making a laughing stock of the club - and the fans. We keep hearing that the fans demand an attacking style of football - Keegan style, I presume. Great as it was to watch it didn’t win any trophies. His maxim ‘I dont care if the opposition score 4 as long as we score 5′ is great in theory but proved worthless in practice. After suffering years of frustration, I am now of the mind that I wouldn’t care if we won every game 1 - 0. It might be dull and depressing but if it brings trophies all well and good. When you are winning trophies better and better players are attracted to that success.
Its about time we woke up to the fact that at the moment we are a run of the mill club in the top division and its going to take a lot of time, patience - and money to change that. In the present climate, who in their right mind will want to take on this job? Perhaps anyone who knows that they may get the sack in a few months but have a big pay off for their retirement!
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
If someone comes in now, they’ve really got to hit the ground running and get hold of the situation quickly. There isn’t time to acclimatise to the English game, and that would rule out a lot of the foreign candidates mentioned like Klinsmann and Van Gaal (assuming they’d be remotely interested).
Mourinho would be able to walk into a bigger club on the continent, and I’m pretty sure that’s where he’s heading.
Redknapp would be a good choice in the circumstances. He has the experience and the self-confidence to get to grips with everything quickly, and he’s done well in his previous posts.
Having said that, I think the likes of Redknapp, Hughes etc would be difficult to shift half way through the season, and I think we’ll make do with Pearson for the time being.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I would be happy with Klinsmann, Van Gaal, or Lippi.
But I really think the dream ticket would be Mourinho as manager and Uncle Bobby as director of football.
Hiidink would be ok too, but highly unlikely I think.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
We have to steady the ship at newcastle and we need someone who has done it all and my man for the job hasnt been mentioned yet
id get Mick Quinn and bring in Terry Yorath as his director of football and get Roy Wegerle as quinns asistant because he was a mint player.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Got to be King Kev. I think he needs to finish of the job that he started years ago. No more crap chairman, money to spend ! Keegan is a must. He can motivate the players - as he has proven in the past at nufc, and he loves newcastle.
I’d also vote beardo as Keegan’s assistant but that’s just a pipe dream. I’m excited to see who it will be, but dont wanna see a championship manager fall into the role. With all the managers since keegan (bar Robson) we’ve shot outselves in the foot by employing someone who is clearly unable to motivate and play attacking football !!
…We are the loyalest football supporters, the worlds has ever had !

Firstly there are some definite no’s.
Mcclown
venables
keegan (may work but too risky)
For me we have to go abroad and find someone who is at one with newcastle united, especially the passion, and what it wants to acheive. Not someone who wants to do it ‘their own way’. while obviously much of it will be their own way stubborness and thinking you know best gets you into trouble when results fail.
Here is my shortlist:
Houllier - cant remember his football at liverppol but quite a big name manager and has won things. Also previously stated he was interested in the job.
Klinsmann - some people will be surprised but for me he is a person who likes to attack, as shown with a surprise german performance in the world cup, and could be a gem here.
Van Gaal - a big name manager who likes to attack and is tactically aware. currently at AZ but may be interested in one last big challenge
Mourinho - i think he would love the job but with his status would be hard to persuade him. proven but only a good word from sir bobby might make him realistic
Lippi- never really seen any of his teams but i could see him doing well from what i have heard. also with these really big name managers comes a lot more support from the toon army since we have more expectation they will get it right in the end.

Jurgen Klinsmann — best man for the job at the Toon
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I don’t think anyone has mentioned him but the only man to lift NUFC out of this gloom is a winner (maybe not yet at club level manager)- His name JURGEN KLINSMANN.
He has the charisma, personality, knowledge (especially of the German football market)and I’m sure the Geordies would really warm to his style of play. He presents himself well and speaks perfect English & there are a lot of things to like about him.I’ve spent some time in Germany and their self discipline and “no grey areas” attitude is something us English (& us Geordies) could learn from. It’s about time we had some discipline in our team and I’m sure JK would play flowing attractive football & with him having a similar charisma to KK would be able to attract some top stars to the Toon with Ashleys £ backing.

1) Mourinho
2) Klinsmann

2) Coppell
3) Mclaren

redknapp - won nowt + bung scandal
hughes - has man u job in his heart
mcclaren - haha no thanks
shearer - no thanks
jol - if all else fails
i dunno who i want, in a dream world mourinho, but whoever he is he needs time. the problem with nufc is that some of the fans are thick and want success now. we have no divine right to success than any other club, yeah we have big crowds but so do other clubs. we see the likes of dyer, bramble, bowyer etc earn mega mega bucks and laugh in the face of the loyal fans and thats what makes us angry. no one would boo a team that gives 100% with a little bit of flair and we dont have that. players like martis, viduka, emre cant be arsed at times and thats not good enough. rozehnal, cacapa, enrique just aren’t good enough. what we need is a back to basics approach with good proven prem talent.
and where the fuck are our scouts, when did we last find a bit of talent that was unheard of, solano is all i can think of

Mourinho, Ancelotti, Lippi or any other top flight International coach who has a proven track record and won something. Definitely NOT Redknapp, Mclaren or any other UK mugs in the game, why do you think England have employed a foreigner? If it has to be Shearer well at least he’s a Geordie but thats about it. I’m glad Allardyce has been sacked, the new word with the fans of late is ‘continuity’, yes thats fine with the RIGHT manager not any old rubbish. What has Sam Allardyce won? NOWT and he never will because he does’nt have the ability. Finallly I’ve never known a club where the fans constantly slag each other off like our club, at the end of the day we all want to see them win !
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 11:34 am
I agree with ‘nufc till i die’.
I think we need a foreign manager with shearer as assistant. I like the sound of Klinsmen, Mourihno and Houllier… what about Lippi?
I do not believe the answer lies within a British manager this time.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I feel so sorry for Big Sam, he was a decent manager but didn’t quite gel with us. I cant believe reports suggesting Redknapp! Is he any better than Big Sam?! For him to be a success it would require a lot of time… time which the board and the fans wouldnt allow.
I would sacrifice all our transfer money to get mourihno as manager. he would give us a hard kick up the backside and get a sense of team cohesion within the toon.
Mourihno for manager!!!!

Again Louis van Gaal, he is in my thinking the only manager with the type of CV that Newcastle need. We need a manager who actually have won something in his career and I am not talking about a Coca-Cola title or a Turkish League Cup. I am talking of Top Division Titles and European Titles. van Gaal have done all that.
Titles:
1 x Champions League: 1994-95 (with Ajax)
1 x Intercontinental Cup: 1994-95 (with Ajax)
1 x UEFA Cup: 1991-92 (with Ajax)
2 x European Supercup: 1995-96 (with Ajax), 1997-98 (with FC Barcelona)
3 x Dutch Eredivisie: 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, (with Ajax) plus in 2003-04 (as Technical Director)
1 x Dutch Cup: 1992-93 (with Ajax)
3 x Johan Cruijff-schaal: 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96 (with Ajax)
2 x Spanish League: 1997-98, 1998-99 (with FC Barcelona)
1 x Spanish Cup: 1997-98 (with FC Barcelona)
1 x Rinus Michels Award (2007)

Redknapp- really the same as big sam. if were going to spend lots of money on sacking manager and hiring another id rather it be a step forward then a step sideways.
Shearer- taking emotion out he needs experience at a lower level first or at least start off as a coach/assistant. needs to prove himself first essentially.
Jol- not a bad choice. did well at spurs but the squad he assembled was unbalanced (no LW but about 100 CM!)
Hughes- would be canny choice. as mentioned in other peoples posts hes spotted great talent others did not. great record with wales and has probably taken blackburn as far as they can go.
Venebales- no thank you!
Mourinho- obiously the ideal choice but realistically he wouldn’t come here.
Houllier- would be good choice. plays a good style and his league positions with liverpool were similar to rafa’s and won domestic cups. dominated french league with lyon but i guess anyone could do that.
Keegan- best manager weve had in a long time but that was 10 years ago and the games changed. record with man City wasn’t so flash
Klinsman- unproven at club level. there are proven club bosses out there before we look to him. also doubtful if he would come to us.
McLaren- God no!!! one good season with boro and thats about it.
basically my choices would be houllier or mark hughes. its just a shame redknapp seems a dead cert at the moment.

This was all about money/transfer policy surely? Big Sam publicly wanted more, Mort had already said they didn’t want to give him it until the Summer, presumably so they could judge him over a longer period. I’m guessing Sam pushed them into a corner “Back me or else” and they had little choice but to agree to part ways.
So where do we go from here? I don’t see the point in appointing Redknapp, and I particularly don’t see any point in getting Coppell. Both are good managers but both would want/need “time” to turn things around. Harry took years (over two separate stints, between which he failed badly at Southampton) to make Portsmouth a success of sorts - but no more a success than Sam did at Bolton to my mind. Coppell also doesn’t strike me as the sort of manager the Newcastle fans would exactly warm to. Kind of like Dalglish without the jokes (yeah, exactly). Assuming the fans aren’t prepared to realise we aren’t Barcelona and that we aren’t going to actually win anything for years to come, then the best we can hope for is somebody to come in and play this “Attacking Football” everybody seems to want so we can at least be entertained while we lost at home to the Wigans of this World and sit in mid-table. So where does that leave us?
I’m dead set against Keegan coming back. Keegan wouldn’t do it anyway, but even if he would Ashley isn’t Sir John Hall - he won’t get millions to spend and he wouldn’t have the same impact he did back in 1992 when we languished 1 1/2 divisions lower with a derelict stadium and when you could actually buy decent players without owning a Russian oil field or six. And you can forget about Shearer too. Shearer might be a Geordie, but he’s not blind. He knows he doesn’t need this job at the moment. He’s happy doing Match of the Day and sunning himself and personally I can’t fault him.
BBC 5 commentator last night (I forget his name) made a good point though. Everyone is discounting Mourinho because he wants a Real Madrid or an Inter Milan, etc. Whilst that could be true, Mourinho has made his name at Porto and Chelsea - both (at the time) underachieving, mid-to-large sized clubs. Sound familiar? I’m not sure how well he would do at a huge club like those he seems to be waiting for. Those clubs already have success regularly and the fans will be less impressed with his attitude. It might just be worth pitching the idea to him that IF he could come in and turn it around, he’d be a legend. I think the fans would love his personality and his ego would love the attention. Probably won’t happen, but I think they should at least pitch it to him. “So Jose, think you’re special then? Prove it. Win things here and you’ll be a God, never mind special”. I just think it might appeal to his ego.
So, Mark Hughes it is then….

No a very smart idea to have sack Allardyce without having already secure a proven manager (ie Jose). Hope we will be at the right end of the table when the season ends.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 5:58 am
I hope 2 god shearer doesnt get the job, atleast not yet neway give him a year or 2 at a lower league club then as a assistant 2 jose or jol (hopefully jol) or we should of given sam at least half a chance then we would be in this postion this time next year.

Well he’s gone and I must admit I am not too sad to see it happen but as usual the media and supporters of every other tin pot club want to have their (uneducated) say
The truth is we won 1 game in 3 and played some of the worst football I have witnessed in the last 40 years of following the club, on a par with some of the dross of the late 70’s & 80’s, fortunately we didn’t get shown too often on TV here in NZ
The truth is that SA seemed to have a mindset on his style and would not change despite repeatedly seeing failure on the park - surely if he was as good a manager as he seems to be rated then he would have looked at his squad and adjusted to suit but no….let’s persist, (insanity : doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome)
Many say we should have given him longer but how long would it have taken, for either some form of entertainment or abject failure (and if the tabloids are involved these two states are the exact opposite of what NUFC would define). 24 weeks, $26 mill and we were performing worse than any could have expected (OK the season here in NZ is only 22 weeks long so I may be a bit unfair)
So once again we are at the crossroads, on the field maybe 24-28 points from safety (this year is gone !) and the usual names plus a few more get mentions
Redknap - please God no - more of the same
Coppell - no, done nothing at the top level
McLaren - sh1t, I think I’d top myself
In fact I don’t want an English manager as they’re just not up to it
So Hitzfeld, Lippi, Scolari, Van Gaal, et al all need to be considered but maybe best that we appoint an interim (SBR, KK, AS) until the end of the season and target the best over the next four months
My view on a few of the usual points
Instant Success - media beat up believed by the masses, strangely I do not want instant success rather a team who play to their strengths and succeeds on a game by game basis, gains consistency and moves forward from where we are now
Alan Shearer - maybe (but not convinced), KK had minimal coaching experience and it worked but would lightening strike twice
Mike Ashley - let him do what he wants, if he decides to sit in the stand so be it, he owns the club and is not the Chairman (that’s Mort’s job)
SA - it is the last vestiges of FFS being removed and hurrah for that
Good Managers won’t come - if the cash is there then they will come and with MA in place the cash should be there (what will we pay to dispose of SA)
I will watch the scenario from afar and once again pray we get it right

If it wasn’t so hilarious I’d be feeling sorry for you all!
Keep slagging off the Boro, and we’ll keep laughing…yep, we got battered in the final of the UEFA Cup, but we got there and we won a trophy the year before…when did the Skunks last do that then?
And now, disaster has struck again…the only slight anxiety I now feel is that you might actually appoint somebody who knows what they’re doing. But then again, probably not!
Bask in the glory of tomorrows headlines…its the only way you manage to make em!

I can’t believe we’ve sacked Big Sam. I think after the signings this season they must of thought they are not going to let him spend any more money as I think apart from Faye none of them have played well.
We now have a tough run and hopefully we wont be pulled into the relegation battle with Middlesbrough and Sunderland. Is Harry Bassett free?
Now who would want to come to our team, We are no longer head and shoulders above most teams financially, so we wont be able to recruit any of the competitors managers. We offer high pressure with little chance of success as we have a shit squad and no backups(so said by Ferguson) plus the transfer funds don’t look forthcoming. So we can offer little to spend, a team devoid of creativity, confidence and luck and the pressure of a top 4 team. Who would take that? We deserve it all for replacing Bobby Robson with Souness, we’ve been in freefall ever since
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 2:43 am
No No to Harry Redknapp, McLaren, Martin Jol or any other small fry who got booted like Sam. Is Harry any better than Sam? I dun think so. I wish Jose Mourinho could be the one but its impossible unless they got him the next season. Its no point getting someone who isn’t a big name. Just look at the past casualties, only Sir Bobby did well and he in fact got sacked. The rest, Gullit, Souness, Roeder are all small names with no pedigree and its not surprised they couldn’t delivered at all. Pls dun repeat the same mistake of hiring another manager who is not proven to be better than Big Sam, else the outcome will be the same again and sacking Big Sam will be a wasted decision.

Please newcastle fans get behind coppell for manager. He’ extremely good in the transfer market and will bring top quality attacking players in.arsene wenger rates him very high because he admires the way coppell tries to play.my heart will bleed if coppell is not hired.

Newcastle fans please get behind a campaign to get coppell hired.i swear on my life newcastle will win a shit loads of trophies and the football you’ll see will be beatiful. He’s very good in the transfer market and have a guess who rates him very highly the genius arsene wenger becuse he admires the way coppell trys to play the game.if he doesent get hired my heart will bleed.
Sent in on: January 10th, 2008 at 1:31 am
why is nobody talking about steve coppell.he’s the best manager outside the top four and in my opinion could do a brilliant job at any of those clubs.he won manager of the year last year, and the year before that he got the most points ever in the championship well over 100pts.he’ spent nothing at reading only 2.5m on a replacement for sidwell and he’s in 12th place and easily could get a european place with their current form and january targets.he playes attractive attacking football with hard work and imagine what he could do with 50mill Newcastle would easily be top four if not better. He’s better than any one on that joke of a list besides Mourinho. He came 8th last year thats a better accomplishment than what Keegan did at newcastle.Reading are an extremely small club.

A lot of people are asking ‘Who would want this?’. The answer is: plenty of manangers. Those who want a challenge. Can you imagine how highly regarded a manager would be if they can get Newcastle to a trophy? He would be treated like a God by the Toon Army. He would be regarded as a miracle worker.
Whoever it is, they must have a clear philosophy of how to play. Allardyce seemed confused as to play long ball or short passing. Apart from Viduka, he didnt have the forwards to play long ball but he never seemed to want to go the short passing route either. The new manager must have a clear philosophy and clear expectations.

Well another one bites the dust at St James’s. For once please please please can we get a decent manager in, some1 like Jose Mourinho or Lippi. Its already being speculated that harry redknap is in the running, how will he do any better than allardyce???
The club is at its lowest point in ten years and its gunna take something special to revive it, oh i can already see the yellow bar rolling along the sky sports new page reading “Jose Mourinho has signed as manager for newcastle united”.

Newcastle United deserve to be managerless for all time! Eight soon to be nine managers in ten years? Its a disgrace. We had the best English manager in the league, and certainly the best of those that were willing to take on the poisoned chalice.
Well, the boo boys got there wish .. this time next year they will be screaming for the head of the next manager half way through the season … If ANYONE is stupid enough to take the job!! I for one am ashamed to call myself a Newcastle United supporter for fear of being tarred with the same brush as those brainless fucking morons.
Yet another season wasted. I assumed, as a self made billionaire, Mike Ashley was brighter than that. Are we ever going to give a manager time to build some foundations and get a little continuity?
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
gotta be the mighty martin jol + robbotheyido there are no intelligent geordies!! we are raving loonies
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
If you want to see more and more of the dross that we got under Sam, then Jose Mourinho would be your choice. I also believe he can’t manage in the Prem for 3 years.
Harry would be ok, Shearer is a good gamble but would anyone with pedigree take the job? Jol showed investment in the future & decent success at a fairly ’similar’ club. Hughes puts out a good team that’s difficult to beat… not really what we’re after.
Venabbles would get the football right in the short term, but surely we want more then that. Houllier likes his teams to keep passing the ball across the defence. Keegan is King, but sadly a dream. Jurgen, I don’t have much of an opinion on.
Who else? I dread to think of some of the possibilities!
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Bring back Bobby Robson on the strict undertstanding that he is A) cancer free and B) will be caretaker along with Pearson until the end of the current season.
In the meantime open up negotiations with either Mourinho or Hitzfield for the future (read summer).
I would throw my cap in the ring, as I feel eminently qulified: Geordie born; played for me school teams and youth club teams for a year or so then emmigrtaed to Canada to take up the game again in my late twenties on an amatuer basis: wouldn’t put up with half of the no talents that pass for footie players today; know most of the verses to “The Blaydon Races”; would avoid whining about the tough schedule; the fact that some of my signiungs are now going to be missing for the African Nations Cup; would avoid cliches like “We’ll play worse than today and win; we deserve a decent rub of the green; football’s a game of two halves; the fans deserve better; schoolboy defending cost us another game today; I’d play Milner & Nzogbia in their proper wing postions; but it seems you have wear these black & white ties with your game suits. Not enough colour for me!!
Howay the lads and damn the torpedoes!!
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Is there an intelligent geordie that can tell me who is most likely to get the job as there is a great oppurtunity to make some money! because it wont be Shearer or Redknapp (in my opinion), so that is two of the favourites out the picture already.
Im thinking Jol..?
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
I’ll take the job. I’m a student and need a short term job. See me through til September, with a pay out at the end.
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
100% José Mourinho!
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
If it was a “anyone you want choice” - Lippi.
Realistically? God knows. I think “Jeff” makes some interesting points that if waterd down contain some truths.
I don’t think anyone is going to want to come and get what Allardyce got. Whos going to want to come here and ruin their reputation?
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Ottmar Hitzfeld, awsome manager, free agent at the end of the season, plays attractive footie, good with discipline, world wide respect from players, decent pedigree winning CL. If not the balls out for a keegan/shearer combo, please please please not Cockney ginger harry rednapp, he is a dick!

etc
A BIG NAMED PROVEN MANAGER WITH A CV OF WINNING !!!!!!!
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Firstly, the likes of Lippi, Benitez, Houllier, Mourinho are VERY unrealistic, no matter great a manager of such calibre would be.
However i have a hunch Houllier would be interested.
If Keegan could repeat his last spell, excellent. But this is also unrealistic.
I only hope some of the names branded around the odds, such as McLaren, Hoddle, Graham and Venables are not going to be considered. They are no better than what Allardyce provided.
And Shearer. Please no. He is inexperienced and yes, sometimes an inexperienced manager comes good, but great players dont always make great managers. He retired a legend, and with the club in this mess, if he fails, he will just be another name in a long list of newcastle managers in the premier league.
Whoever it is, he needs to be a strong character, who takes no crap, can control his dressing room, can inspire a team and bring forward thinking football to this club. Martin O’Neill fits nicely into that category but he is happy at Villa, as is Strachan at Celtic.
I personally would like someone like Louis Van Gaal, or Redknapp.
And finally, as Nufc.com point out, Mort said in appointing a new manager, we will “follow the right channels” So is he currently employed?
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Louis van Gaal
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Paul Ince …plays hard but with skill did wonders at macclesfield and now at MK Dons
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Who’s left who we haven’t tried already ? We are the laughingstock of the league.
I think the only man big enough for the job is Jose. Jol, Houllier, McLaren, etc don’t excite me. Shearer is such an unknown quantity and may be terrible. Redknapp is too savvy to leave Pompey for the graveyard of all managers.
I hope that Ashley and Mort already had Jose lined up, if not I think sacking Big Sad Allardyce could have waited until the end of the season.
Just another day at the Toon !

Gordon Strachan. Experienced, intelligent, proved he can handle a high pressure job, and qick witted enough to deal with our biggest problem - the media.

jose cant manage in england this season - it was in his departure deal with chelski - so you wont be getting him. harry wont want to have to start again, lippi wouldnt want it, now would mark hughes or jurgen klinsmann…or shearer…u” probably end up with mcclown…oh well, your fault for sacking one of the best english managrs there are in the premier league

A big well done to all newcastle fans for getting another manager sacked through your fantastic support.I was up there last week watching the city game and after spending the evening around st james i couldnt believe how you think you even know how to support a team. What you have to realise that when the chips are down the club i.e manager and players look to the fans for a lift, fuck me what chance your club ever has of achieving anything is extremely remote with the most fickle fans on the planet
Sent in on: January 9th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Well i think it’s a no brainer to want to see Jose Mourinho as manager but failing that Slaven Bilic I think would make an excellent manager. I don’t think the great one is quite ready yet!

If not a top top manager (Lippi, Mourinho, Benitez) i would give Shearer a go, speculation will never go away until we do and at least there will be a feel good factor about around NUFC even its just in the short term
