Steve Bennett, from Orpington in Kent, is 46 years old, and takes charge of his 1st Newcastle match of the 2007/08 season as Wigan Athletic travel to St James’ Park to face us in the Premiership. We have a bit of an unhappy history with Mr Bennett, who has made several controversial (but not necessarily incorrect) decisions against us in the past.

Match: Newcastle vs Wigan
Date: September 1st 2007 | 3pm KO
TV: Highlights on BBC1, MOTD.
Newcastle entertain Wigan at St James Park following their Carling Cup 2nd round victory over Barnsley at the ground on Wednesday night.
The Magpies are hoping to secure a first victory and league goal at home, since the 2-1 victory over Liverpool back in February. Since then, things have been a little sour for the 52,000 fans but since Big Sam came in back in July, there seems to be a new era in force at the club.

Newcastle’s unbeaten run continued last night, as they triumphed over a valiant Barnsley side, 2-0 at Gallowgate. £27m strike pair Michael Owen and Oba Martins were the goalscorers, on a low key night where a tough Barnsley outfit challenged United bravely - for 45 minutes atleast.

Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins scored impressive goals to seal Newcastle’s passage into the next round in what turned out to be a relatively comfortable night on Tyneside. New signings Cacapa and Enrique impressed, and confidence in the team must surely be rising.
What were your thoughts on the game? How will Newcastle do in the tournament? What of the new signings? How did Barnsley do? Who should start up front for the next game? Have Your Say!

Big Sam and his troops made the short journey down the A19 to face the Red and White “army†that awaited them at the Riverside stadium. So far unbeaten this season, Allardyce decided to stick with the same men that served him so well at Bolton, but played worse against Villa a week later. The fully fit Owen, Caçapa, Enrique and Ameobi were either left out of the 16 altogether or benched, with the midweek fixture against Barnsley firmly in the back of the mind of our well loved gaffer.

By James Collins On Tue 28 Aug 2007 | (Have Your Say: 44 Comments)
With the new season starting to take shape, and the current transfer window nearing its close, it is becoming clearer as to what areas of the Newcastle United team need strengthening, and also what players at other clubs are realistically available to us. With that in mind, which Tottenham Hotspur players would be worthwhile targets?
