Tyneside’s early optimism and joyous bewilderment came to a crashing bump back to reality on Monday night, with Newcastle falling to a 1-0 defeat to bottom team Derby County. A thoroughly uninspiring and unorganised performance from the Magpies opposed much of the decent football witnessed this season; as fans in the away allocation and on TV alike, sat stunned at the shocking display that United offered.

Newcastle hope to extend their unbeaten start to the season, a run which has seen them win two and draw two, equating to their best beginning since 2001.

Newcastle’s unbeaten run continued last night, as they triumphed over a valiant Barnsley side, 2-0 at Gallowgate. £27m strike pair Michael Owen and Oba Martins were the goalscorers, on a low key night where a tough Barnsley outfit challenged United bravely - for 45 minutes atleast.

Following the first day of the season, Newcastle supporters were on cloud nine; a fantastic thumping win at the Reebok offered a tasty opening to the new campaign. However, a drab and lifeless long-ball fiasco had soured Geordie hearts, following the 0-0 draw at home to Villa, and all of a sudden Newcastle go into their next game, against an unconvincing Boro, with must-win intentions.

The money’s spent. The signings are in. The season tickets are bought. The fans are draped in replica shirts. The pies are stocked. Andy Gray’s eccentricity levels are rising. Gary Lineker’s ears are trimmed. The balls are about to be kicked.

Happy new season.

You could say that the summer signing of largely unknown Villarreal left-back Jose Enrique, has sparked the most excitement amongst the Geordie nation as far as all our summer signings go. Fortunately, regular forum-goer ‘Arkanoider’ was on the scene for us as Enrique wrapped up his goodbye speech at Villarreal’s stadium this afternoon. Where a perturbing new age of inflation dawns on English football, our domestic league stretches into its 120th year. Things have changed since 1888; Preston North End were the team to beat back then. Dubbed the “invincibles”, Preston won the first two leagues, and won the FA Cup of ’88 without conceding a goal and won the league without losing a game. Their star man, John Goodall, was kidnapped from his previous club, gagged, and blue knickers and a white shirt were forced on him. English footy’s come quite a way since then.

Might this be the final nail in Glenn Roeder’s managerial coffin? Having pitifully lost to Blackburn at home, we clocked up our 17th defeat of the season - a Premier League record for our club. If we do not win at Watford, then we will accomplish our worst ever points tally for a season in the top flight.

In a game where we were utterly outplayed and completely toothless, but for the sparky vengeance of the returning Michael Owen, Blackburn made sure that the Magpies’ new kit looked less than shiny.

What would you like to see happen now? Shepherd sack him tonight? Or should we wait until the end of the season - or even keep him? Have your say…

Newcastle haven’t lost their last home game of the season for the past 16 years. It’s ironic that, in our ultimate match, injury worries marr Glenn Roeder’s preparation, in what has been a season ravaged by fitness problems. Nevertheless, the Toon go into a game which they feel that they can win, against a Blackburn side that have been neither here nor there all season.

Come the morning papers, the return of Michael Owen will hopefully extinguish any lingering thoughts about the dismal performance that Newcastle United displayed on Monday evening. In what was a dire display from the playing staff, and an equally pitiful showing from the manager, the Magpies inexplicably went down by 1 goal to nil against a distinctly average Reading side at the Madejski Stadium.

A pitiful display from both manager and playing staff on Thursday evening saw Newcastle crash depressingly out of the UEFA Cup for the third time in four years. A gutless and bored performance from the Magpies, complete with insanely negative tactics from the laughable Roeder, had the 1000 travelling supporters suspecting the worst from only the first few minutes. Newcastle had kissed their European prospects goodbye for yet another year, literally from within the opening stages.

Newcastle take a relatively slender 4-2 lead over to Holland, where they face one of the deadliest home sharpshooters on the continent. Hostile and nerveracking, the 17,000 capacity DSB Stadium plays host to AZ Alkmaar and their opponents, as the Dutch attempt to claw a way back into the tie, and ultimately the quarter-finals.

A scintillating first half performance from Newcastle saw them overcome dangerous Dutch counterparts, AZ Alkmaar by an impressive four goals to two on Thursday night. Obafemi Martins was a pinnacle figure throughout, scoring two goals before half time, both of them sublime finishes.
