Newcastle entertain Wigan at St James Park following their Carling Cup 2nd round victory over Barnsley at the ground on Wednesday night.

The Magpies are hoping to secure a first victory and league goal at home, since the 2-1 victory over Liverpool back in February. Since then, things have been a little sour for the 52,000 fans but since Big Sam came in back in July, there seems to be a new era in force at the club.

The referee for tonight’s Carling Cup Second Round tie at St James’ Park will be Graham Salisbury of Lancashire. Salisbury is 44 years old and joined the National List in 2001. So far this season he has refereed 3 Football League games, and also took charge of Hartlepool’s 2-1 victory at Championship side Scunthorpe in Round 1 of this competition. In 4 games he has shown 13 yellow cards and 1 red.

Big Sam and his troops made the short journey down the A19 to face the Red and White “army” that awaited them at the Riverside stadium. So far unbeaten this season, Allardyce decided to stick with the same men that served him so well at Bolton, but played worse against Villa a week later. The fully fit Owen, Caçapa, Enrique and Ameobi were either left out of the 16 altogether or benched, with the midweek fixture against Barnsley firmly in the back of the mind of our well loved gaffer.
