Your Shout: Newcastle Utd 3-1 Aston Villa - Have Your Say
By A.K. Dholakia On Wed 31 Jan 2007 |
A rather unconvincing performance was made pleasing on the eyes by goals at the start and end of the match courtesy of James Milner, Kieron Dyer and Antoine Sibierski. A 49,201-strong crowd witnessed an almost perfunctory display, but were happy enough to casually procure three big old juicy points from an Aston Villa side with some worryingly disillusioned fans [ - okay, so just those on VillaTalk]. Sweet.
Where did the team do well? Does Milner deserve an international call-up? What did you make of the opposition? With the transfer window pretty much shut, has Roeder failed us in any position(s)? So very much to discuss, have your say!

Paul
You are right about end of season, I am racking my brains here, I think Luque did have a run of 12 but was not at the end of season. The Sunderland thing was branded as maybe a chance for “another start” with us, but didn’t turn out that way.
Whether or not we have been totally fair with the guy is a point worth debate. It just annoys me when we get the usual complaints. Souness / Roeder is stupid, Souness / Roeder has a dislike of this or that player. Loaded comments without any basis of knowledge or justification. I’ve made my judgement on what I’ve seen, I suspect they make their judgement on a similar basis, but of course with more involvement.
I have the same sentiments about Luque as I did about Viana. More artist rather than artisan. I was a lot more annoyed with the Viana situation. He wasn’t a last minute panic buy and we had allegedly done our homework.

In the last 12 games of last season Luque played a grand total of 34 minutes. 19min v Sunderland, 9min v Man U and 6min v Bolton. Hardly a solid run of games.
I agree that it’s too late for Luque now and his attitude now seems to stink. My point is that I think he may have done better if given a solid run of games in his real position of left midfield.
We didn’t play him when he was low in confidence other than a few minutes here and there, dropped him after he played and scored in the UEFA cup this season and have now pulled the plug on his move to PSV despite seemingly having no intention of playing him. Yes, he should have the strength of character to get through that but I don’t think we’re totally blameless either for his current poor attitude.
I’ve always rated Milner by the way and am currently feeling really smug about him proving me right!

“I’ve noticed a lot of people praising Milner and slating Luque. Just a thought - previously, many people were calling Milner who has come good after finally getting a run of games. Did Luque ever get this chance? He looked good when he first signed but got injured soon after and never got another run of games. Discuss…..”
I’ve personally never slated Milner, however the biggest criticism of him was always one of end product. Not lifting up his head and picking out a pass, especially when we asked to always play out wide right (occasionally left) and supply crosses for the likes of Shearer. He has always sweated buckets on behalf of the team. He has now matured as a player and proved himself for Newcastle aged 20/21.
Luque. Never once got a sweat stain on his shirt and unlikely to change attitude aged 28.
If you look at what GR has said recently, i.e. that Luque will get a run out in our UEFA cup games. He like a lot of others probably reckons he will prosper in games where they are less likely to played out 100 mph helter skelter of the premiership.
Luque had a solid run of the last 12 games at the end of last season where he scored once against the mackems, though never really looked like having the passion to want to really make the shirt his own. Compare him with how the likes of Martins has really given it his lot. Then again he does have the physical attributes to hack it as an attacking player in the prem.

Maybe with Owen and our other good players back fit again we will get more money from TV next season, it seems to have slackened off this season.

It was a good enough game, in fairness, the lads battled it out, on Harper he’d a decent enough game but I still think Given is ALOT better, myabe Harper should be considered for the English no 1 cause like in fairness there’s alot of English keepers around the place and he seems to be the best outta most of them.
Oh and lads it’s happened finally it’s happened we’re in the top half of the table!! YAAY *touch wood*..making sure I don’t jinx it..like Roeder in fairness stood his ground, he’s doing a hell of a job like I’ve heard Mourinho complain about his “injury ridden squad” complaining, complaining, he wouldn’t survive a day at Newcastle.

Agree with Scott, don’t understand why Hunty is ahead of Edgar in the pecking order - Edgar looks more composed when he is playing, perhaps Hunty “works harder in training” or something

Such a shame Roeder always picks his favourite Huntington ahead of Edgar. Just my opinion but David Edgar will be world class one day and if Roeder has anything to do with it, sadly it wont be at Newcastle. The kid has never put a foot wrong but was used as a scapegoat for the draw at Birmingham. He marked Ronaldo out of the game so much so that Ferguson swapped him over to have a go at Huntington in the second half. He didnt receive any kind words from Roeder for his 30 yard goal neither. Taylor and Edgar in central defence could be a great partnership. People have commented that he looks like a young Jonathan Woodgate !!

I see someone has compared Gooch to Ferdinand which I find a bit stereotypical. He is a big, black, physical, defender but honestly if you compare the two at the same age Gooch has more poise and ball skill then Ferdinand did plus he is bigger and stronger.
Here in the States we would refer to him as a linebacker, not a soccer player, which is why we love him controlling the back line for the national team. Some videos are out on the net of him manhandling hordes of tiny South American attackers. Not exactly what he will see in England, but hilarious nonetheless.

i think the fact we have no money, played the main part, that and clubs are now wanting STUPID money for players becuase of the new premiership TV deal which isnt gunna help us especialy with our thin squad.
although if you look at the positives, it doesnt look like we wasted any money LOL, although squad is badly thin and we need major improvements, iam happy about the fact we didnt panic buy just for the sake of it.

Fantastic first 20 minutes where we could’ve had 5 goals, then 60 minutes of crazy, manic footy, where Villa were all over us and should’ve got 5 or more themselves. We couldn’t win the ball at the back, allowed them to pin us back by failing to clear the ball properly and by losing possession in midfield with careless passing or aimless punts upfield.
Harper + Parker kept us in it, ’till the last 10 minutes when they ran out of steam and ideas before Sib delivered the “death-blow”. Overall a superb 3 points, even if the final score-line was exceedingly flattering / misleading, given the balance of play.
MoM: Milner(goal + 2 “assists”, one for us and one for them!!). No, it has to be PARKER, the all-action hero, again.
In view of all our injury problems + paper-thin squad (Fred + Glen’s joint responsibility), ninth in the league is remarkable. We could eventually finish 7 or 8 in table, but only if we can keep Oba fit + if Gooch turns out to be the strong, solid defender that we all hope he is. If we lose Oba and Gooch turns-out to be Titus Mk. II, then we’ll sink back down to lower half of table.
p.s. how did Sky highlights manage to miss Parkers great shot that hit the bar. Nowt wrong with Carew’s header but it wasn’t a corner in the first place!

Strange performance last night in a highly entertaining game (though often enough for the wrong reasons).
We played very well for the first 15 minutes when we should have been 3 up. It wasn’t one of our usual collapses after that, simply a case of being outplayed until 70th minute when they took Carew off, letting us of the hook.
A very lopsided performance. Milner still doing the business, Parker deciding to have a kick at very villa player, Oba not having many chances but working hard up front and of course the defence apparently being introduced to each other 5 mins before kick off. The reaction to Goochy in the team next week should be interesting :0)
I know Duff has just returned from injury, but still worried about him. Neither running around his man or picking the right pass for a colleague is looking to be far to familiar a problem; though to be fair he did find Sibs just at the right time.
Don’t really want to start the whole Luque thing off again, however compare him with Carew who having never played a prem game before and with another debutant partner, just looked the part. I recall the same with Kuyt at Liverpool who settled in immediately. I wish the hell we had signed either of those two. It just shows that if you take care when buying a “name” from abroad you can find somebody with both the right attitude and aptitude for the league, without needing to wait an inordinate period of time to bed in.

I work with a Belgian guy who supports Genk and he reckons Gooch is the best player in Belgium by a country mile. He’s over the moon he’s left Standard as his team play them this weekend.
The lad keeps up to date with Newcastle so he can/could wind me up if we lose and he reckons Gooch will totaly dominate our other defenders in terms of ability, strength, agression and ambition and he says he’s very similar to Ferdinand only bigger and not quite as good.
He does certainly looks the part…..but then so did Boumsong.
Here’s hoping

I believe its time to hold our nerve with Roader I think most people can see he is going for the complete package not just the Name lets be patient for once.
I’m no great fan of Fred’s but I do not see any one else Rushing to take over a supposedly cushy position and other than the stupid way Bobby was tret I don’t hear many ex Managers complaining about the support they got ?

Who was it on this site that said Milner should be binned? He continues to impress. We definitely need to develop a better killer instinct. I don’t care for the dramas. Howay the lads!
Cheers,

As a supporter living overseas, I only have the benefit of the net, TV for games and my brother who is a season ticket holder at SJP to keep me abreast with the happenings.
It seems to me that we have been totally let down yet again in the transfer market, with just one loan signing of a player whom little is known.
Is it a case of the “right” players not being availabe as GR would have us believe, or is that just a smokescreen for the real truth, which could be anything from not wanting to play for GR to not wanting to move to a club which is run by a total incompetent (Fat Freddie), or all of the above. Freddie has again surpassed himself with the suggestion that we are a big club with quality players falling over themselves to sign, so Freddie boy, where are these “quality players” then? Some of the other clubs seem to have done ok during this window so I don’t subscribe to the thoughts that there isn’t any player who has moved that we would be interested in… Upson, Neill, Carew, Baros and on and on and on!!!
I guess we will just have to dream about what might have been and settle for, at best a mid table finish and perhaps a quarter or semi final appearance in europe if we are lucky, then being out of europe next season, content ourselves with an ordinary recruitment campaign again in the summer
Nevertheless we will always live in hope that miracles do actually happen and I for one will continue to shout very loudly at the TV whenever the boys are on.
Haven’t seen the Villa game yet, but I’m looking forward to watching it later whilst enjoying a couple of cold ones!!
Howay the lads!!

A damn good win, our position is looking good now, Spurs have got United next week, which is a tough fixture, but we’ve got Fulham away, and with Montella looking good, and the inevitable start for Onyewu (who will probably need time to adjust), I’m not holding out for much. Milner looked mint, he better keep banging them away, same goes for Dyer. We didn’t deserve the win in terms of possession, but we were clinical and although we lacked composure in defense we certainly didn’t lack commitment and bravery. Still need a left back, why the hell didn’t we try and get Warnock???!

Great result tonight, nice to be getting the goals, i think james milner will keep getting better the more he plays, he came back from villa a grown man and is now an asset to the club he must not leave. steven harper is a fantastic keeper the lack of games has not allowed him to flourish and maybe become england number 1 (well lets face it shay is god) , he had a good game tonight, but again let down by the defending, which i am glad at glenn because if there was any area we need to bolster it is the defence and we have somewhat done that, so its not all but, but we have to find consistency, more belief and take every game at a one at a time.
come on FC!!!
P.S. i hope that souness stench luque has gone, if you remember an incident where souness signed a supposed Goerge Weah cousin, i rest my case!
Sent in on: January 31st, 2007 at 11:56 pm
Unconvincing result. It was a good job we scored so early on or else it could have been a different story. Villa were the better team in my opinion and had a goal wrongly chalked off. We desperatley need a new left back - It’s interesting to see that Roeder prefers Huntington to Edgar, as I thought the Canadian played well against Ronaldo at home against the Mancs. Regardless of Hunty playing out of position he still got caught out numerous occassions this evening and looked a little rusty.
Milner for England? If he keeps his head down and works hard then I don’t see why not. After all, Stewart Downing is in the squad and he hasn’t exactly set the world alight. Hats off to big Titus tonight, for his first game back from injury he looked solid and made some important challenges. Newcastle need to play the ball on the deck more often, fast flowing high tempo football is the only way we look like causing teams problems.
Slightly disappointed with Roeders pre-match comments about O’Neil not having the courage to take the toon post. The only reason why he didn’t take the job was because he didn’t work to work for the fat man (Shepherd). Fair play to him, who the hell would?
Sent in on: January 31st, 2007 at 11:52 pm
Howay Gary, Dunno if you’ve seen “The Gooch” play before but he…hmm…think of him like a Alan Shearer in the back field. Now even for only loving the Toon for less than a year i know the tall order of sizing someone up to Shearer. But Gooch gets moving and doesn’t stop. He’s just the tank we need
Sent in on: January 31st, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Jesus christ defence was a bit of a mess to put it easy. Actually we in my opinion only played well for 15 mins in the begining of the game. Defence wont get us through and a injury to Oba Oba will clearly crush if not lady luck shines even stronger than it already does. I dont think Roeder really let us down we are just in a postion where we cant spend any money. Well I dont want to be dramatic but we can almost write this season of if defence keep working like it does lady luck is a fickle bitch and might go arounf from team to team….
Sent in on: January 31st, 2007 at 11:43 pm
nice to be back to winning ways. it was a bit dejavu from the spurs home game, going 2-0 up and crusing then on the back foot for most of the match.
why can’t we defend corners? i hope to god “goochy” is just a no no-nonsense defender like he says he is.
we lacked a bit of leadership when nicky butt went off in my opinion. oba’s work rate was excellent though especially the second half.
thats enough slating for tonight.
milner just gets better and better.
duff did ok.
titus did better than i thought he would on his return(it looks like hes lost weight!)
harper kept us in a winning position and in my view should have got the man of the match.
hopefully we’ll follow that up with a win against fulahm on saturday!

I must admit I’m new to the Toon, Only been a footie fan for the last 8 or 9 months. Nevertheless, I believe Roeder is doing a damn fine job. With the injuries our side has been hit with with the closing of the transfer window tonight he has successfully lead us into the top 10. He helped arrange the loaning of Albert Luque, who I’ve yet to have the “honor” of seeing him dazzel me. I’m a Statesmen (or a “Yank” as I’ve been called by the few Geordies I’ve meet” so I am naturally thrilled to see the signing of our “Gooch”. Given our HUGE signing, Michael Owen’s injury, plus the injury to Oba earlier in the year, and our current standing in the Premier League I say, and I am just one opinion, that ol’ Roeder is doing a fine job. I mean…at the end of the day you could always have Souness back.
Howay the Lads
