Your Shout: Fulham 2-1 Newcastle - Have Your Say
By Jonny Hall On Sun 4 Feb 2007 |
Newcastle United were undone for the first time in the Premiership this year as they fell to defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday Afternoon. Fulham grabbed their first win in 8 games with goals from Heidar Helguson and Brian McBride, both of which came in the 2nd half. Obafemi Martins struck his 11th of the season and his first in 2007 well into stoppage time but it only proved to be a consolation goal.
Oguchi Onyewu debuted in the centre of defence alongside Titus Bramble and didn’t fail to impress, even coming close to scoring from a delivered corner in the first half. Nobby Solano was left on the bench while Stephen Carr kept his place in the side and Steven Taylor dropped to right back in the absence of Solano.
As always we want YOUR say. Was Roeder right to drop Solano? Should Carr and Bramble be automatic first team choices? How did ‘the Gooch’ get on in his first game? Is Martins finally settled in at Newcastle? What would you have done differently?
Tell us all that and more by simply leaving us a comment!

Carr is a lazy, soft sod. Diop is a big lad but to be brushed off like that was an emberrasment. What was Roeder playing at by leaving solano out and bringing in shambles(who showed again he is nowhere near prem class). I bet he is regreting not getting a few more bodies in. Dyer is not a striker and his atributes are too similar to Oba(small and pacey), I dont rate Sibierski either as his best days are well behind him, luque will not get a sniff and he has no confidence in the kids so why not play a Chelsea style 4-3-3 with Oba up top with Duff and Milner cutting in or tracking back as required, Butt can hold in the middle allowing Scotty or Dyer to push on. Solano/Taylor/Gooch or Hunty/Edgar at the back.

There are not enough expletives to describe my contempt for Stephen Carr, should not wear the shirt again.
Why was Nobby dropped???? He was the only 1 to give Oba a decent ball all day and looked what happened, too late by then though.
It’s a disgrace an average Fulham team have completed the double over us. I only hope that this mediocre season sees significant change come the end of May when the Chairman/Management is up for grabs.

I do feel quite negative about Newcastle at the moment.
Gross mis-management since summer ‘03 has seen us decline at a fats rate.
We all know that the current squad except for a couple of players isn’t up to it. We all know that January player recruitment was well short of what was needed.
We all know that Freddy is a terrible chairman. We all know that Roeder can’t hack it as a top-flight manager.
There really isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said.
Having “smaller clubs” like Fulham do the double over us will sadly become the norm and not an exception as long as Shepherd and Roeder remain at the club.
Times are bleak.

Ok, ive had enough of second rate players in the newcastle squad now, carr is bloody awful, also bramble is a joke, i think roeder is either blind or stupid, maybe both, why persist with these pair of clowns. What happened to hunts and edgar? they were immense for us when we were short at the back.
I love scotty to bits but it really isnt working for him at the moment, he needs to get his game together. When is emre gonna be back? he is class. Duff is looking like a good bit of business by chelski at the moment, we need good old zoggy back.
Anyway enough of negatives lets look on the brighter side of life, owen is back running in training again this week and even better carr is injured again!!

I Agree with lee g. Parker is rubbish and Butt is Ok but non of them have the attacking flair and goal scoring ability that at least one central midfielder should have. Examples are Nolan, Cahill, Barton, Lampard, Scholes, Fabregas need i go on. He needed to buy a left back and a right back as a priority and he never. No wonder martins stamps his feet when moves break down that are started in the centre of midfield. In the summer we need a left back and a right back, a central midfielder (creative one).
My last rant is Glenn Roaders lack of tactical Knowledge. We only play 442 or 4411. Why is he not practicing 3 at the back in training which will give us more options as it seems we are very easy to read for the opposition. Roeder mentioned that he played two big centre backs and a big right back to thwat the threat of there two centre forwards. Bet Coleman was clapping is hands as we were so defensive that we were not a threat at all. Here is why
Three centre backs and a useless right back in the back four.
Two defensive midfielders, a half fit left winger, and a right winger who has the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Two strickers with no airial presence that are doing well but have no support at all.
What a mess. Read this page next week for a review where Kettering towns football director Ron Atkinson is asked in to teach Emre what not to say in a game and teach Roader tactics

Im usually a fan of glen roeder but think his team selections are getting worringly pathetic.
carr is a liability and a joke, and that was when we signed him, hes now possibly the worst right back in the league!! Duff is living off the fact that 3 yrs ago he could run past people, cross and score goals. Not going to slag butt off because hes done well recently.
And then we have our ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL captain, this bloke runs around the pitch fouling every 5 minutes, offering absoloutely nothing in terms of creativity/attacking threat. He has no pace and doesnt seem to motivate anyone!!.
Am I the only one who thinks this joker is the most overated player in the league???

The defence again:
Right Back:
Carr is past it. For the time being Nobby should have play there, otherwise Taylor at a push.
Left back:
Babayaro / Carr (as at Fulham) / One of the young lads are not good enough. Duff should have played there. He has done a decent job when asked to do it in the past. On current form his forward role cannot be justified once N’Zogbia is back. If having to play a defender out of place at LB I would opt for Edgar.
Centre back: Two from Gooch / Taylor / Huntingdon / Ramage (OK at CB just not at full back)
Probably give Gooch / Taylor the nod.

It appears that when we play well the board is littered with comments that we are on the way up and when we play badly “our position is not a true reflection” Firstly, the league does not lie!! I completely agree that we were terrible yesterday and the selection of Carr is absolutely baffling in the extreme. Gooch I think was very good, better than Bramble and Moore (where is he???) We desperately need Emre back and I think some transparency from the club on his situation. I seem to remember a certain Lee Bowyer playing his finest ever football with a legal case hanging over his head, maybe Emre could be the same if he isn’t injured!
The biggest two worries for me are
1. The possibility of Oba getting injured!!!!!
2. Damien Duff’s extreme lack of form.
One of these areas can’t be addressed at the moment because Freddy said we “as always, proceeded with care” in the transfer market!!!!!!!!!!!! When have we ever done that! The other area can be and this is the time for GR to show how he can get the best of what we know to be a good player in Duff.

i did mention it a couple of games back, i said wait till players come back from injury and watch the team slide back down the table, carr, bramble and duff should not be starting unless the players playing in there positions have not performed, which isnt the case.

Harper did okay.
Taylor did okay, but should have been playing in the centre of defence.
Bramble same old Shamble.
Gooch promising.
Carr same shait.
Milner, okay in the first half, but struggled in the second half.
Parker, aggressive but no play-maker.
Butt, not his day.
Duff, who?
Dyer, not his day
Martins, not so much to do. Made a nice goal.
Solano- Should have started at RB.

We were hopeless. Get rid of Carr, Sib automatic, Roeder not experienced.

Roeder picked the wrong starting 11 in my opinion. Why on earth does he insist of playing Carr when available - he’s a very poor player, it’s as simple as that. Solano, Edgar and Huntington have all proved they can do a better job than him. Siberiski should have started, although I do like the prospect of Dyer and Martins’ pace upfront, Dyer is clearly better in an attacking midfield role with the freedom to roam. Duff lacked in creativity and ideas (a familiar occurrence which is now extremley worrying) and Bramble was back to his shaky self. Terrible second half peformance - inconsistent teams will never prosper….
On a more a positive note I thought ‘Gooch’ had an impressive debut. Strong in the air and on the deck with a bit of pace - looks promising. Hopefully we can bounce back against Liverpool, although it will be a difficult game. The last time we actually played some good attacking football was against Portsmouth at home, more of that please, lads!

To say the team were lop-sided is probably the understatement of the century. An incompetant right back playing at left back, a centre back playing at right back and the leagues most infuriatingly inconcistant defender partnering a guy who’s never even played in England, never mind for a premier league team although ‘Gooch’ did reasonably well. Our top scorer being forced to play up-front alone when there was a partner for him sat on the bench. A left winger just back from injury, who looked as if he couldn’t hit a cows butt with a banjo let alone find a team mate with a pass. A right winger who couldn’t beat his man with a stick. A central midfielder so woefully lacklustre that he was unrecognisable as our most consistent performer this season. Scott Parker played his heart out but his communication, or lack of, with his team mates concerns me - He’s worringly un-vocal for a captain.
Performance wise i know that individually and collectively we can play ALOT better.
Bad day at the office but no complaints from me, we got just what we deserved.

Roeder seems like a better manager when his back is against the wall and doesn’t have a full squad to choose from. He worries me when he does have choices and seems to pick the wrong players. I think as more players become available the worse it will become. Nobby Solano has more than earned his spot at right back and Steven Taylor has been very consistant at centre half. Titas Bramble (who should have been sent off, again) and Stephen Carr shouls be cover on the subs bench at best. Edgar and Huntington are young, but have played well enough for one of them to have the left back position and the other for cover incase of injury. Nicky Butt should’t have played if he was injured, Dyer should have been in centre midfield with Scott Parker and Sibierski should have partnered Oba up front. Giving a player like Nobby with all his skill a few minutes at the end was an insult. You can’t replace skill and they need to get the Emre situation and or injury soted out and get him back in the side. Though I get the feeling he will never kick a football again for Newcastle United. Really hope I am wrong about GR because he has done a good job in lots of ways. Frustrated 6000 miles away in Canada.
Ian.

What’s happened to this site???
The match was more than 24hours ago and this is the first comment!!
Listened on the radio and it sounded poor, I don’t think we should forget that we’ve been lucky to pick up so many points recently - spurs away, villa at home were 6 points when we deserved none. I really think 9th/10th is a false position - we are still struggling in my opinion!
Big Dave.

When will Roeder learn carr is not the answer for right back. He is out of touch and appears not to be interested in playing for us. His body language is awful. Nolberto should be automatic in that position he and Milner had struck up a good understanding down the right hyand side and because baldy was back from injury and a supposedly big name in the squad he got his place back. Yes Nobby was suspended for one game but he should have been put straight back in yesterday what happend when he can on with 4 mins to go (Who puts a sub on with 4 mins to go unless you are 3 goals up and want to waste a bit of time?). We score through his clever play.
If 50,000 fans at home can see who should be playing how come the management team cannot, it si time they listened to the fans who are the heartbeat of this once grreat club!
