Roeder Resigns
By Paul Mosley On Mon 7 May 2007 |
Sky Sports News reported on Sunday night that Glenn Roeder has resigned as manager of Newcastle United with immediate effect. The club subsequently confirmed on Monday morning that Roeder’s resignation has been accepted by the board.
Is he right to have resigned? (I think we all know the answer to that) What are your memories of his reign? Who should come in next? Have your say on Newcastle-Online.com.

I was so relieved when I heard the news. As much as I’d like to see Ranieri as manager its looks like the post has already been filled and set up a few weeks ago. Allardyce wouldnt be my first choice in fact he wouldnt be in the first 5 but he is streets ahead of Roeder who imo lost the dressing room a long time ago and only has himself to blame !!

Outlaw you are bang on, I cannot understand the rantings to get a bloke we didn’t want just over a year ago, who has won nothing of consequence (on that point tho’ maybe we are destined to get him), who managed a team to 16th, 17th, 8th, 6th, 8th and anywhere between 5th and 9th this year, positions we have bettered every year bar two, including this year - this stinks of a nearly man
Ian Wright, if only we can get the club thinking along the same lines as you appear to, no other top four club would consider appointing SA and we expect to compete at that level with him…err I have a slight reservation here but I don’t think we have the structure yet to find the new Wenger
FS you will blow millions on players why not look at one less “name” on the park and blow the cash on a man who will get what we already have (plus a couple more) playing to their potential and there are a number of managers (none English) who are out there - make the decision do we get someone out of contract or pay to get the one we should have (note I do no say want because more than likely the one you want I don’t)
As I said earlier Bayern have not qualified for the ECL and Hitzfeld was only on a contract until the end of the season - get him before it is renewed or picked up elsewhere
If SA does get the job I will back him all the way but just have another feeling that it all may end in tears and another few million in compo
How many times do we have to eff this up, get the right top man in, develop someone under him (ala SBR & JM at Porto and Barca) and set a dynasty going where the job is handed over when it needs to be to the following set of capable hands
Here’s hoping

Yes but the fact is that the bloke hasn’t won anything at the top level!
We could do with getting back into Champ League football but like every other Newcastle fan I would like to see some silverware. Sadly, I don’t think Fat Sam has what it takes!

I have to say that i was like a lot of nufc fans that did not wont Roeder to be our manager i am sick of the huge mistakes this board at SJP keep making.
STOP shepard and co and bloody well think about the new appointment there is plenty of well meaning footballer managers who think they could do the job at SJP but as a fan who speaks with my heart on my sleeve and my brain in my head , i wont to see some one in place who actually knows what us the geordie fans want .Yes we really need to win something ,but i want to see a manager to get the 11 plaers he sends out play with there hearts on there sleeves and not come and play for some stupid amount of money .
Roeder made some stupid mistakes ie letting that so called footballer MR S.CARR actually start a game but his biggest mistake was not buying in players at the start of last season and in the jan transfer window . I could go on about more of his mistakes but you lot already know what they are .
I will only beg shepard once here and now, if you get it wrong this time ,then please shepard you go as well as the next manager you sack if they do not get it right.
I wont say sorry to none of you for what i have said in this email only because as a nufc fan and season ticket holder for over 20yrs i beleivei have to have my say.
cheers

Bar the exception of Alex Ferguson at Man Utd, the successful managers in the premiership (top 4) are foreign.
Liverpool brought Houllier then Benitez.
Arsenal brought Wenger.
Chelsea brought Ranieri then Mourinho.
Ian Wright makes a good point in stating none of the top 4 would appoint Allardyce so why should we if we aspire to be back there.
Shepherd made a mistake handing Roeder the job in the first place - not a big enough name and only succeeded last season because of the Shearer factor and the relief that Souness had gone.
Of course this downfall all began when Robson was sacked disgracefully. The one man who had finally got it right was discarded.
Reading some of the comments about Erikksson, I am being persuaded by him. He has an impressive record and is a big name who can attract big players. Ranieri would be my first choice but Eriksson is creeping up my list of potential managers.
As for Hitzfeld he is a class manager but is he really going to leave Bayern Munich for Newcastle? They may not be in the champions league next season (4th place doesnt get them there does it?) but he will get them back there next year. The players and consistency Munich display is far greater than Newcastle.
So Ranieri or Eriksson for me.

GIVE THE JOB TO BIG SAM, HE HAS A PROVEN RECORD OF GETTING THE BEST OUT OF COMPLETE PR**KS AND MISFITS. GOD KNOWS WE HAVE ENOUGH OF THEM FOR HIM TO WORK WITH !

There’s been various posts posing the question ” Which Premier League club would appoint Roeder as manager?”. The answer is obviosly none. Can I pose the question “Which team currently in the top four (which is where we aspire to be) would employ Allardyce as their manager?” The answer is none The same, tired old names are being banded about, not that it has anything to do with us. Look at the appointment of Wenger, it was Wenger who? Benitez et al. There needs to be some imagination, the usual suspects either are not good enough or don’t want the job. Sadly, I don’t think anyone at the clud has any imagination whatsoever.

roeder should never have been given the job in the first place. he done a great job at the back end of last season including a 4-1 stuffing of the unclean, but he was never going to be the man to get us back up in the top 4 again.
a club with this much money and 3rd highest crowds in the country should never be hovering just above the relegation zone never mind sitting outside the top 6.
i hope freddy is reading this site or at least has the decency to listen to the fans regarding the appointment of our new manager. big sam i don’t think is the answer, he’s done a great job with limited funds at bolton but the reason the reebok is half empty every other week is because they play the long ball and are awful to watch.
a few people, mainly the press have slaughtered sven but his record is only second behind sir alf ramsey and his domestic record in other countries is excellent.
sven would be my choice or failing that some of the other names like hitzfeld or van gaal.
LISTEN TO THE FANS FREDDY AND DON’T APPOINT BIG SAM … THIS IS YOUR FINAL CHANCE, GET IT RIGHT.

Outlaw, i thought Bolton were 5th and pushing for Champions League place before Allardyce left, and they only just missed out on europe last season because of a very good finish by newcastle, and were in europe the season before that aswell. Correct me if i am wrong.

Thanks Glen, you stabilised us after it looked like we might get relegated under the previous c**t. Things didnt work out, and in fairness the wanker upstairs shouldnt be such a cheapskate and you should of gone back to the juniors which you were very good at, come the end of last season. As i said in another article the other day ‘Bring in Big Sam’. Unfortunately shepherd is a professional c**t and it would not suprise me if we see aidy boothroyd, alan pardew or paul jewell in the main seat next season, no wait i forgot mike newell is available and possibly glenn hoddle aswell.
Shepherd just do everyone including yourself a favour be a man and resign like Glen Roeder. Because your just fucking it all up. Big Sam and a takeover is the way forward!!!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
I hope to God it’s not Allardyce. What has he done besides make Bolton a mid-table club? The man is unproven at a big club and Newcastle fans have a high expectation.
I honestly think it would be a bad move if Newcastle go for Allardyce.
Bring in Scolari or even Ranieri. Someone who is proven at the top level. We don’t want to be making the same mistakes over and over again!

About 3 days ago i wrote a piece on this website about our man Roeder, saying we need to get behind him, we need to show support and back him all the way cos whether we like it or not, to quote myself from 3 days ago - ‘Glen roeder is our manager and will be our manager come next season’
I feel a bit silly now.
I love supporting this club you know, because other than Newcastle being a football supporter is great if yuor team are winning and not if they’re not. But with us, there’s always something happening to keep your attention, whether it’s our own players beating each other up during a game, wrapping they’re cars round lap post (see Mr Dyer - on to his 3rd Ferarri i believe) or the endless string of managers we’ve had, i’m never bored. Plus we’re not that bad either, we play in europe a lot, normally get a half decent run in most cup comps.
Never mind Detroit, I LOVE THIS CITY!

a sad day for me, can’t believe glenn has gone…yes we’ve had a poor season but this is largely dwn to the horendous injuries weve suffered and top players not performing as they shud have. Roeder should have been given the summer to mould his team, i’ve said it countless times before…who ever comes in, more than likely allardyce, but whoever it is will be given about 10 games- if were not in the top 6 by then the ‘boo boys’ will be calling for the new guys head anall. when will we learn, although shepherd mre importantly, that sacking after sacking is not the answer and i agree with the suggestion that he is trying to take the focus away frm himself….roeder had to pick up the pieces frm souness this season and despite finishing 13th/14th, i dont think any more could have been expected frm roeder let alone any other manager due to the reasons i mentioned above…i think his sacking is a step backwards as opposed to a step forwards, lets aim the flack at the players for a change- theyre the reason for our mess…

It’s got be Sven. So Sam has made an unfashionable Bolton side into an average team - big deal. I think that’s more of a reflection on how bad the Premier League can be at times. He’s won nothing in 8 seasons. After 20 years, it’s going to be bye-bye to the season ticket if Sam gets the job.
Sven’s done it all. He has a flawless domestic record. I think before anyone knocks him, they should look at the facts:
Degerfors IF – 3 seasons, 3 promotions (not bad in anybody’s books)
IFK Göteborg – league, cup and UEFA cup treble (quite an achievement for a Swedish team)
Benfica – league, cup and UEFA cup runners-up (European cup runners-up during his second stint at the club)
AS Roma - Coppa Italia
Fiorentia – above average league campaigns, qualified for Europe second time round, similar record with Sampdoria
Lazio - Coppa Italia 1998 and 2000, European Cup Winners’ Cup 1999, Serie A 2000!
Sven inherited the England team in a mess and he did very well throughout his tenure (60% win ratio). I think some people have very short memories, largely down to the fact he was, and still is, cannon fodder for the press. Ok, we didn’t do the business in the tournaments but has it ever occurred to you that the England players are perhaps overrated? Expectations are far too high. 3 stats from wikipedia:
1. 67 matches spanning over 5 years with only 4 competitive losses (3 inside 90 mins). This record is only beaten by Sir Alf Ramsey and Glenn Hoddle, excluding Caretaker managers.
2. England were ranked as a top ten team by FIFA for the vast majority of Sven’s time as manager, and they improved to 5th after the 2006 World Cup. Between 1975 and 2000 they were rarely in the top ten and often fell below 20.
3. He never lost a competitive match by more than 1 goal.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the same people who want Sam are the same naïve bunch who wanted Stuart Pearce as England manager because he has ‘passion’. What a crap idea that would have been.
Therefore, I go for Sven, but unfortunately I think it will be Sam. Another step backwards.

When Glen was appointed I was dissapointed as I knew the day would come when he and the club would part. Roeder done great things at the academy and a lot of young players are pushing through into the first team because of his efforts.
Most of this season Glen had a team decimated by injuries and was never able to select a match fit Owen, did he really get a fair chance?
Why did Glen not buy a few defenders? I have a feeling that he maybe wanted to but had to go though the board and Freddie Shepard.
Who next? Whoever it is I would love to see Shearer back to help out in a coaching role, Martins, Shola and Owen would all benifit from that. Sam is looking like the man but everyone knows the way Bolton play and it is far from the attractive football Newcastle fans demand. Sven could be in with a shout and his record for England is a lot better than he gets credit for but unfortunatly he has the personality of a wet fish. Whoever gets the job next I hope is given the time they need to build their team and put us back into the top 5.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I am pleased to see Glenn leave in one sense but feel for him in another as he had so many injuries that at times things were out of his hands.
He made 2 fantastic signings in Martins and Duff,(also Sibierski served us well) so he will leave being the only manager who has never wasted 1 penny of the clubs money. That we can truly thank him for.
I didn’t like the way he excluded Luque and never had any intention of giving him a chance, Luque was obviously desparate to impress.
Fortunately for us fans he didn’t sell Milner, if he had done that he would have lost the fans a long time ago.
Hopefully the new manager(my first choice would be Houllier - 2nd would be Shearer, 3rd would be Big Sam) will be good for Charles N-Zogbia.
I think the writing was on the wall for Roeder when we lost in Holland - he didn’t use Milner all night, the tactics were shocking and it’s a game we wouldn’t have lost 2-0 if Roeder had got his tactics right.
I think we have a great squad overall, short in some areas, but with money to spend and the right manager in place i think we can be excited about next season.
I don’t think Michael Owen would be looking forward to another season of long ball football with Houllier so maybe Big Sam is definately the boards first choice, despite the fact he didn’t win anything with Bolton (apart from a play-off final). however he did get Bolton to the semi finals of the f.a cup when they were in a lower league and to the carling cup final against the smoggies with an average squad.
i think the future is bright for us my fellow toon army friends.

We need a manager who has acctualy won something in his carrer. Someone who knows what it takes to win.
And that someone is not Big Sam. Sure his done great things in Bolton and it would be intresting to see what he could do in a club with the resources that newcastle has. But still I would prefer someone like Sven-Göran or Louis van Gaal.
They know the game and with Sven at the helm maybe Owen will stay.

Adam,
Is that the Sven who was truly awful who lost only four competitive fixtures in five & a half years (Northern Ireland and 3 Quarter Finals), the same Sven that used friendlied to blood new players and a loyalty shown to him by nearly all the players he used
I could live with that..
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 11:38 am
A little surprised many fans are against a Big Sam appointment, and some would prefer Sven. Sven was truly awful for a large part of his reign as England manager!
I’d like to see someone like Houllier. IF B.S is named, I’ll personally be optimistic at least.

Chris,Re your comments
“Sven, Le Guen, a proven domestic pedigree. Do you not know that he completly messed up Rangers!Dont even get me started on the joke you put bou Sven taking over. They do say New Zealander’s are mad!”
I will agree most Kiwis are as mad as they come but being born and bred in Newcastle and being in the Leazes End from 67-94 maybe just has me as a Geordie first even after 13 years out here
As I said “a European manager with a proven domestic pedigree”
PLG, forget about Rangers he was shafted by the board and Barry Ferguson, his record outside that is 3 consecutive domestic titles 2002-2004, that’s 3 times in the ECL and a quarter final as well as the league cup in 2001 - OK it is only France but his ECL record would stand him in good stead anywhere
SGE, only bloke ever to win the double in 3 different countries (Sweden - well OK not the hardest : Portugal/Benfica pressure job here and suceeded - standard once again maybe not the highest and Lazio and I don’t think we can complain about this standard
Also he has won the UEFA cup with IFK, ECL final with Benfica, Roma Italian Cup, Sampdoria Italian Cup plus a number of other finals domestically and in Europe
Don’t be taken in by the British gutter press, personally I couldn’t care less who he is shagging and even with England only Sir Alf has a more successful record
Would I have either of these two as my first choice - No, that still goes with Hitzfeld but there is no way I would be disappointed if we ended up with either
Let’s get the discussion going and make sure we don’t end up with a poor fifth choice or a cheapskate solution

Unlucky Glen - But you were never the man for the job at the start and that has been proven 18 months later. Thanks for taking over from the man that decimated the club, who’s name I cannot utter!! Martins - great buy!! Now, lets get a serious appointment in - If Mouribnho leaves, lets get him!!! If Hitzfeld is available get him!! Lets do something constructive and get a top draw manager to lead us and the players out of mediocrity and onto trophies. Shepherd, consult some senior pros about appointing the next guy as your record is scandalous!!!

IT HAS TO BE 1 OF 3 TO REPLACE ROEDER:
1. LOUIS VAN GAAL
2. GUS HIDDINK
3. OTTMAR HITZFELD
FAT FRED PLEASE LISTEN UP - DO NOT APPOINT FAT SAM! HE WON’T DO ANYTHING EXCEPT MAKE US FEEL LIKE WE’RE BACK IN THE SOUNESS ERA. I’D EVEN GO FOR SVEN AT A PUSH BEFORE SAM ALLARDYCE.

As a man Reoder had integrity, wish him all the best. I ahve no doubt he had our nest interests at heart.
As a manager he used money wisely though why the defence was not strengthened I will never know. However, as everyone knows he was unable to motivate, shape or get the best out of the team.
I do not think it was an accident that when he took us to 7th, Shearer was by his side, to offer strength and leadership.
Now, I’m sure that in the next 24-48 hours Sven with be unveiled, He has more credibility, but he also has this tendency to play players out of position. Still he will be better than Sam.
I would hate it if Big Sam was appointed, hate the style of football, and he’s dodgy to boot. Also given he already snubbed us, I’d be surprised if Freddie appointed him. If it’s a choice between Sven and Sam, I’m going with Sven, but I’m hoping that we’ll be able to tempt a proven European manager, but won’t hold my breath.
Here we go again.

To say I am pleased to see GR gone is a bit of an overstatement, relieved more like
He, with AS, got us out of a corner last year but didn’t want the job and should have stuck to his guns on that and I couldn’t help thinking he was never comfortable with the position, watching the Reading and Blackburn games here in NZ just reinforced that fact
Now Freddy it is up to you….
When SBR went I wanted Ottmar Hitzfeld
When GS went I wanted Ottmar Hitzfeld
GR has gone and guess what…
If Bayern don’t make the Champions League let’s get in there and give it a shot, the worst he can say is NO (get the Hitzfeld for the Toon bandwagon rolling again)
Failing OH, hopefully we will aim high and go for Van Gaal, SGE, Le Guen or another European manager with a proven domestic pedigree
Don’t want Sam Allardyce, the last Englishman to win a domestic trophy was Bryan Little and that was 13/14 years ago…doesn’t this history say something
Well here’s hoping
We cannot afford to have it blown again….I for one certainly do not want us to become the next Leeds

NUFC 4 LIFE. thanx Glenn

i hope he goes back to looking after the academy, although that may be unlikly.
iam glad he has resigned/been fired, and now the task of apointing a EXCELLENT MANAGER instead of second rate ones, the task once again is left to the fat guy in the suit. if he has been fired its even better becoz hopefully god willing we will apoint a manager quickly WHO IS TOP NOTCH and he can have summer to prepare.
i think we should all thank Roeder for his efforts, it was no easy task non counting the injuries and lets face it non of us would turn the job down if offerd it, he gave it his best go.
Although he didnt succeed i think its crucial to point out he perhaps saved this club from relegation after souness and for that we owe him HUGE thanks, now lets hope freddy gets the apointment right, we need a experienced manager who wants to build something its up to the fans to not expect trophies next season but except us to start re-building as a club instead.

Well Well Well after a big disappointment I woke to the news today that roeder has got the chop. Cant say im disappointed in the least. Its also good to give the new manager a full preseason to bring in and get rid of the players draggin this club down….
What the hell were we doing playing 4-3-3 against Reading last week. He was only a good manager when the team picked itself with injuries.
As soon as he has something resembling the first 11 his selections and tactics are totally unacceptable.
We have 3 good players in Owen, Martins and Shola but only two should be on the field at any one time.
AS A MAD NEWCASTLE FAN i have to say that we need a manager who is appointed for 3 years minimum. We cant keep changing every year or two.
Look at the best teams in the premier league arsenal & man u both have managers for more than 10 years. We must find a long term solution…………………..
I say Sven who will keep owen & given and bring in top quality players…
Sent in on: May 6th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Now I never believed Roeder was the right man but I have a great deal of respect for the man who knew what it meant to lead this club.
I do feel sorry for him that we were hit with horrendous injuries and cruel luck. It did bring one positive this season however - youngsters. Glenn is such a good coach and he should remain at the club in the Academy in some capacity.
He is not a manager however. Sadly his tactics have been very poor - players out of position, little inspiration and not knowing when to make a sub or who to bring on/take off.
He is a good honest man, who was willing this club to succeed. Sadly he was not the man. He should not have been appointed, and was only given the job, as, partially due to the Shearer factor, he had a great end to last season.
He has had his high points - notably attracting Obafemi Martins to the club - but other than that they have been few and far between.
As for who our next manager should be:
a) Shearer - dont be stupid. The club is in the wrong situation for him to begin his managerial career. Shearer should wait many years until he manages this club, if at all. And when he does become manager, he will know when to step down if it goes wrong (like Keegan).
b) Sir Bobby - The man is a legend but his managerial days are behind him due to his age and health. All the best to the legend, and we all wish you had never been sacked in the first place. Maybe some are right and you could have a place in the boardroom or a high position somewhere within the club.
c) Allardyce - would be an ironic and debatable appointment! Long style play at Bolton isnt what we want and if he is appointed, how long before many people become bored with the aimless balls to the dwarf pairing of Owen and Martins?
I do not doubt his managerial quality, in fact I am a fan of the sports science he is interested in, however one thing that stands out was his involvement in the Panorama bung scandal - how ironic if we appoint Allardyce when we sacked Kevin Bond who was briefly mentioned in the programme. However I feel he could work well with funds greater than what he had at Bolton, and may even attract Gary Speed back to the club who i believe will become a great coach.
Someone I am tempted by is Ranieri - i wanted him to takeover when Robson was sacked. He consolidated Chelsea as a top 6 prem team then guided them to their highest finish for 50 years (runners up in 2004). Yes he never won the league with Chelsea, and yes he had Abramovich’s cash, but he had them playing good football and I believe he could do a good job for us. His Parma contract runs out at the end of this season and surely it would not be a bad move for us?
Whoever takes over, must be the right man shepherd and no matter how poor we may perform, he MUST be given 2 seasons! If after two seasons we are not top 6(or at least just outside) THEN get rid.
I will back whoever comes in and can only hope he steers this club back up the table, back into europe, and brings entertainment back to SJP.

I feel sorry for Glenn over his resignation but it had to be done, whether he felt he wasn’t up to the job or it was forced upon is up for question (likely to be the latter though). He tried his very best but was dealt some bad bad cards and plus it can’t exactly be easy to work under the fat, useless and selfish, lying slob we call our chairman. The perfect situation for me is that one day Alan Shearer will take over the club, buy out ff and finally we KNOW we’d have someone who cares, loves and is passionate about the club he ownes instead of just being in it for the money. Sam Allardyce is nailed on favourite to take over, I’d maybe like to see us explore other options first and see what is available instead of just making yet another knee jerk appointment. However saying that I can’t really think of too many managers out of a job better than Big Sam at the moment, if he does take over it is a pity he won’t have Sammy Lee with him and some of his other back room staff. People will say that Allardyce teams play boring football but hey as long as you get results that’s all that matters. I really wouldn’t care if we won a cup by playing boring football. PS Good luck to Glenn in the future he’s a top bloke and deserves better luck and to be treated better at another club.
Sent in on: May 6th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Sorry it had to end this way, Glenn. I’m really grateful for the run you had last season and your progress in the UEFA Cup this year was admirable, to say the least. I hope you decide to stay involved with us somehow. I’ve never called for your sacking, because I think you’re a great bloke who really cares about the club. It’s a shame you didn’t have a lot to work with. I wish you all the success in the world in your future exploits!

Just remember before you comment, show the man some dignity.
He is an honest man. His heart and desire were absolutely right, he is a Newcastle Man, even though he grew up in London he is an honourary Geordie, He had the right idea, he talked a lot of sense - check out his early program notes. I would love to see him back in charge of our academy, where he was when Fat Fred came and asked him to bail FF out of the C#@P, FF made for himself.
What he did for us:
Took over from Souness - Thank God. Got the team playing some very good football. Check out the man’s stats (I think it was said to be champions league form). Yes, he tried some tactics that weren’t based around lobbing a ball as far up field as possible.
He won’t use the excuse of injuries but just take a look at what he had to work with, and he did this very well.
He did win the Intertoto trophy. His stats in Europe (intertoto and UEFA) are excellent. Look at the number of goals conceded. Look at the teams we played and won, look at the League we were in, it was considered the toughest.
How he got Obe to come here God knows, if he hadn’t we would be relagated. (17 goals for his first season having to make huge changes in his life to be here and play), I’m looking forward to next season seeing him play.
Glenn Thanks, I wish you every success in the future. I just wished that you had better cirumstances.
By the way all the very best to Bobby, I hope you can beat it again.

Thankyou Glenn, you did a good job, but not good enough. You’re a decent, honest man that loved his club, which are hard to find these days, and I wish you all the success for your future. Do we actually have any other options apart from Big Sam?

Glenn’s a nice bloke but was never tough enough to carry us forward. I thank him for resigning now and realising that it is not his job. Get someone in quick, and lets start a new era

Crossroads Time.Once again we sack(!!)the manager - I always thought that Roeder was a short term solution and may be should have repaleced last season with by a more credible coach. Now once again our ship is without a captain - the nextappointment is crucial for the future of Newcastle Utd - when will Fat Fred realise is that the only way the toon will move forward is by having stabilty and a long term plan - (more youngsters coming through - Fergie done it with Man U and Aberdeen and look what he did for them). There is no quick fix for this club at present it will take 2 years to put it right - if everyone can remember it was in Bobbys second full season in charge(01/02) that NUFC finally took a big step forward in getting back to where Keegan has us in 95,96 and 97.Whoever comes it being it Big Sam or any other insane person who fancies a pop at it will need a min of 3 years and full backing from the board.Remember Sir Bobbys first two seasons - 99/00 and 00/01 were not much to right home about.PLEASE GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME FREDDIE OR BETTER JUST GO.

It’s upsetting to see an honest, decent, passionate man fail at a club he so clearly loved. To a certain extent it saddens me to see him go, but if I’m truthful, he was never the manager to take us forward. Poor tactics, bizarre team selections and a lack of motivational qualities all lead to his demise. I’m glad Glenn has resigned as he leaves the club with a little dignity, although the decision was obviously forced upon him. But we must not forget the real villain here, Freddy Shepherd.
Sacking Sir Bobby and then appointing a man who was on the verge of getting the chop at Blackburn Rovers (I dare speak his name) was unbelievably misguided. Furthermore, the appointment of Roeder was cheap, easy and a manager he could manipulate, an overall selfish act. Our chairman has selected SEVEN different managers in TEN years, EIGHT in TEN when we find out which unlucky fellow decides to take the job next.
The word ‘stability’ does not exist in Newcastle United terminology. So who does want to manager our club? ‘Big Sam’ Allardyce? Personally, I think we can do better than that, but will the fat man see this?
On a final note, I’d like to say ‘good luck’ to Glenn and I wish him success in whatever he chooses to do.
Thanks for Europe.

Glenn did a great job as a caretaker, due mainly to a combination of relief over the departure of Souness and the fact that Shearer was by his side in the dugout but this was only ever meant to be a short term measure. Fred had the perfect opportunity last summer, to bring in a top class, proven manager but as usual he took the cheap option, pissing off the rest of the premier league in the process. I like Glenn Roeder I think that he did a sterling job as head of the academy but the fact remains he should never have been given the job on a permanent basis. It was obvious from the outset that the whole arrangement was doomed to failure.
This sorry mess has set a new low even by the Pieman’s tawdry standards but what else can you expect from the man who killed Bambi.

NOTE to Shepherd
1 Get some advice from Bobby Robson on your next appointment.
2 Do what you should have done when you sacked Robson - appoint him in some capacity.
3 You have form - your previous appointments have all failed.
4 If Robson cannot do it then get someone else with a footballing brain into the boardroom to advise and help the lot of you. I don’t think you and the rest of your board have a clue.
Good luck

I’m sad to see him go in such a manner. The result yesterday and the reaction of the crowd probably sealed his fate. But resign? I think he has been bent over sheperds desk with his strides around his ankles this evening and made to resign. he probably had to go in the end but heres a word of warning for you all - you reap what you sow nufc. and please stop all the shite about shearer being our saviour. Keegan was supposed to be that and look where we are now - mid table dross with an overwhelming expectation to succeed. Back down to earth nufc fans. We are never gonna be Man Utd or Liverpool (players live in Cheshire not Manchester or Liverpool)or Arsenal. I will fully support the next man whoever he is but what happens this time next year when we are in the same boat again?

Good luck. Glen.
Had it not been for injuries this might not be happening.
At least you didnt waste £60 million, like someone we could mention.
£10 million for Martins and 17 goals. Not a bad exchange. ASK chelsea and chev & drogba in there first season.
Is SAM the man for the job?
Bet we end up with Sven.

although i feel sorry for glenn,he had to go.
glenn should never have been appointed in the first place.
his managerial record at his past clubs is dubious to say the least.
freddie shepherd has got to take the blame for this.
somebody should take glenn roeder to one side, and ask him whether it is time for a career change.
glenn is not ruthless enough to be a football manager at any level of the game.
good luck glenn for the future in whatever you choose to do.

Fair play to the man if he did resign,he’s got more balls than one previous c*nt who just waited around til he was sacked for his huge payoff.
Let’s just all hope that fat fred will make the right decision this time, Glenn may have looked like the man to rebuild the club, the way he talked about the scouting system and buying players for the future of Newcastle rather than just stopgaps, but he was never going to be the man to manage the team.
We need to bring someone in who can rebuild this club from top to bottom.

Thanks Glen for what you did at the end of last season, we must remember who your assisant was then. Shearer is the man for the job, he has had his year off and i am sure he is fed up with working with those w….rs on match of the day!!!

It upsets me to see such a decent man fail. It was nice to see someone who was truly proud to be Newcastle manager and know how big a job it is. Glenn, you helped us stabalise after the previous regime and i wish you’d have been the one to take us to the top.Good luck for the future, you deserve all the success, and im sure you’ll find it.Thanks

memories of Roeders reign….
he did a good job at the end of last season. we should have thanked him for his efforts and got a top class manager in last summer
he has been abysmal this season.
his tactics were weak, his team selection bizarre, he is unable to provide any inspiration, the results this season have been appalling, the signings have been shocking.
good riddance to a man who was never up to the job.
