Last time I got a metro from Whitley was late on a Friday night, there was a big group of about charvers hanging around and a load of tramps asking for money (this continued on the train as they sat near us), suffice to say it wasn't the best metro journey i've ever had.
Only station i've ever been hassled by radgies on was Hadrian Road, surprisingly.

Moving to Newcastle next year, i want a list of places to avoid please
Here is what I call: The Metro Death Map. Places I think there are a good chance of you getting a kicking after about 9pm are marked with black spots. I'm sure others will nominate other places. Unfortunately, this doesn't cover the area west of Newcastle, so a simple rule would be: don't go to the West End. The west end, where i live is fine really, no bother any more

Going to Sunderland Uni and living in Newcastle i have no reason to use the yellow routes, so ill stick to the green one me thinks. Thanks for the heads up.

Not really. Keefaz has only highlighted on the yellow line as i guess thats where he lives and commutes from. Anything south of the Tyne is pretty rough, which is most of the green line. The bottom yellow line is again rough, but you must consider areas rather than JUST metro stations. Going off what happens at the stations is daft really.

I was going along with metro stations as areas, like he has Byker station in black, so just avoid Byker. TBH there seems to be a s*** load of trouble in Newcastle, if someone wanted a list of places to avoid in Newry id give them a blank page as there is nowhere really that violent.
Is Newcastle really THIS bad?

Depends who you ask. I reckon the coast is tame along with Jesmond/Gosforth area. That's the best places to live, but also the most expensive. Town centre is safe as well, but you'll need good cash to live there. Byker/Manors area is very dodgy, i wouldn't live there, some places of Wallsend and N Shields are canny, but 70% of it is best to stay away from. Gateshead and the surroundings are about the same. Closer to the Airport holds some nice places to live, but there's nothing up there, and at the top its a pretty much mixed bag of tricks. There are loads of lovely places to live in and around Newcastle, but the metro line doesn't reach all of them, it also avoids the roughest area of them all, the West End.

TBH if you are coming across as a student and either Northumbria or Newcastle Uni doesn't do what you want, then there is no point living in and around Newcastle.
Either find a nice spot in Durham or Sunderland for convenience, or go somewhere else completely.
I'd choose the latter.

Yeah its canny round there, no good for students though. I'm thinking Elswick, Benwell, Fenham & aye, the Westgate road (where i used to live)

Whitley Bay isn't that bad. You get a few piss heads on the weekends going back home on the metro, but most of the time its quite quiet and trouble free. Just been done up as well. Good call on longbenton and shiremoor, wouldn't feel comfortable there even in the day sometimes

Yeah, it's just personal opinion. I rarely venture to places south of the river, so can't really comment. I've been pretty mean, but the only genuinely nice places in North Tyneside, really, are: Tynemouth, Monkseaton, Jesmond, and Newcastle city centre itself. Gosforth, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Heaton are OK. Everything else is either rubbish or just bland.

For a city of under 300,000 it sounds much more dangerous than the city of +3,000,000 I live in.

Chilly Rd metro is not the best place to be after dark, I'm convinced the metro sometimes goes around that station, your f***** if you get caught down there, well off the beaten track.
For me using the metro to go anywhere after 9pm is a potential risk for trouble. The price of the fares nowadays you might as well get a taxi
