Match Preview: Newcastle vs Birmingham City
By Jonny Hall On Wed 17 Jan 2007 |
Newcastle entertain Birmingham City at St James Park this evening in an FA Cup replay, live on BBC1.
MATCH BUILD UP:
Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Solano, Edgar, Taylor, Ramage, Huntington, Butt, Milner, Pattison, Troisi, Gate, Martins, Dyer, Sibierski, Luque, Carroll, LuaLua.
Birmingham (from): To follow…
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder:
“We should have won that first match at St. Andrews and I want our players to make sure we do not miss out on a second opportunity tonight.
“But Birmingham are favourites to bounce back into the Premiership at the end of this season and they will make it tough for us tonight just like they did in the first game.
“We will be playing our 38th game tonight and this season has been like a whirlwind. In fact If someone asked me the date I wouldn’t have a clue.
“But it has been like this for us since we reported back for training on June 28 and we would still rather have things this way than not being involved the way we were in the Carling Cup and the way we still are in the FA Cup and Europe.”
Birmingham boss Steve Bruce:
“I’ll be playing as strong a side as I possibly can.”
“We didn’t want last weekend’s game (Leeds) called off but it’s given everybody a break and we’re fresh and raring to go.
“We’ve still got one or two like Bendtner and Kelly who won’t make it plus obviously Dunn and Forssell, but otherwise I have a fully fit squad to choose from.
“We’ll go and try and enjoy it and take on Newcastle.
“I hope it’s as good a cup-tie as the last one which I thought was the best tie of the round.
“It’s live on the BBC which will give it an extra edge.
“Let’s go and have a crack at it and hopefully we can put on a show and make it a really good cup-tie.”
PREDICTIONS:
Shay Given
Nolberto Solano
Steven Taylor
Peter Ramage
Paul Huntington
James Milner
Nicky Butt
Matty Pattison
Obafemi Martins
Antoine Sibierski
Kieron Dyer
With Martins on form, I really can see a few goals from him tonight. The team is playing with passion and the luck is really going their way at the minute. I can see Newcastle safely into Round four tonight. Newcastle 4-0 Birmingham.

no-one likes you micky.

it could of been worse … how … it could of been that low life rabble along the road … now that would have been humiliating … sure it was a shite result, but do we really need a extended run in the FA Cup with all these injuries … it was just a matter of time before we crashed and burned. Divvent be so fecking fickle, its only five days since Sunday .. any other team with such problems would of fallen apart … give a little credit to Glen and the boys and get behind them for Saturday

I don’t see this as a true reflection of how Newcastle can really play. With the squad currently being injury prone they are less likely to play as well as they are capable. I don’t blame any of the players and think they tried their hardest. James Milner’s goal was one of the best in the club’s history!!!

a total disgrace.lackluster,no committment,no fight and no interest what so ever.but dont worry our overpaid, under achieving over rated players will still pick up their enormous pay cheques at the end of the month and say once again THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR,i wonder if the club or any of the players would re-imburse me for the total committment i have shown over 20 odd years coz they can’t even committ for 90mins stop their pay for the rest of the season ,they dont deserve a penny after this shambolic display

Your fans made no noise, were outsung by the travelling rubbish and you all left before the end-some support boys! Embarrassed on national tv and shown to be the fickle bunch that i know you to be- like the Blues you will never win a trophy in the modern era!

Newcastle United should be fucking disgusted at their performance tonight and should be ashamed when they walked off the pitch! I was appalled and have not seen a game as poor as this in a long, long time…
No one even turned up tonight!
Disgraceful

What is going on how can we loose like this, ther is only one man to blaim for this Fat Fred get him out of the club and get a proper chairman. We need some defenders as i think we have the absolutely worst defence line in all of England.

I think you’re right, I think the Toon army will have too much for a championship team, although I think they’ll probably score a consolation.
I’m going for 5-1
