Allardyce Confirmed as Newcastle United Manager
By James Collins On Tue 15 May 2007 |
After keeping quiet about football’s worst kept secret for a week, Sam Allardyce has been confirmed as the next Newcastle United manager, after he agreed a three-year deal, reported to be worth £3 million a year.
Glenn Roeder’s successor had the following comments to make on Newcastle United’s Official Website, available in full at www.nufc.co.uk:
On getting the job:
“When I met Freddy I could feel his passion for Newcastle United. He is a passionate supporter and it’s well known throughout football that he has always supported his managers.“Now it is up to everyone from Freddy down to me the players and even the tea lady to give these fans the success they deserve.
“I suppose this is the greatest challenge I have ever had.
“But it is one I am excited about and one I am looking forward to.”
On Michael Owen:
“One of the first things I will be doing is sitting down with Michael Owen and having a little chat with him.“I will be asking him does he want to stay with us or go? Obviously I would like him to stay because he has that rare commodity of being able to score goals.”
On transfers:
“Now I have to make some signings for Newcastle United and there a few players around Europe who I am sure will do a good job for us.“But I will be careful who I recruit. What we need at Newcastle United are not good players but players who have the mentality to play in front of 52,000 supporters every week.”

I love that phrase that keeps popping up about “Footballs worst kept secret”
Last month football’s worst kept secret was the one about Sidwell coming to Newcastle. Now we’ve gone a bit tight lipped on that one because it looks like Chelsea and Everton have stepped in.
Now Sam’s definitely here we can call it the worst kept secret.
Even Big Sam was very cautious in his interviews before his appointment, making sure that he neither confirmed nor denied that he was coming to toon. Maybe he was remembering all the guff about the England job, then having to crawl back into his box.
The likes of N’Zogbia and Martins should be sat down and encouraged to toe the line (possibly with a rubber hose or the raggy end of a pineapple).
If they dont want to play, Sam should have them seeing out the rest of their contracts sitting on the bench.
Having signed a contract a player should not be allowed to transfer out just because he wants to
“Hanging’s too good for em. Nail ‘em up, that’s what I say!”
Harrythebastard ;- I’d have gone for
Religious adviser - Glen Hoddle
Modesty, Harmony and Dog Importing - Jose Mourinho
Diet And Exercise Coach - Diego Maradona
Academy Coach - Gary Glitter
Swimming Coach - Michael Barrymore
Onfield Charm and Deportment - Steven Taylor
But for all the big decisions we should hire George “Dubya” Bush
He hasn’t got an important decision wrong yet.

He’s not hanging around is he?
(from Sky.com)
Sam Allardyce has started his overhaul of Newcastle by confirming the departures of five players, most notably Titus Bramble.
Allardyce swept into Tyneside on Tuesday and set out his stall to build a team the long-suffering Newcastle faithful could be proud of.
Defending has been an Achilles heel for Newcastle for a number of years and it comes as no surprise that Allardyce has opted to sweep the decks.
Defenders Bramble, Craig Moore, Olivier Bernard and keeper Pavel Srnicek have been informed their expiring contracts will not be renewed.
And the quartet have been followed through the exit door by American stopper Oguchi Onyewu who has been informed his loan stay at the club from Standard Liege will not be made permanent.
Bramble is the highest-profile casualty, as Newcastle shelled out £5million to sign him from Ipswich in 2002, but his career has been blighted by lapses in concentration and he will now have to seek out a new home for next term.

This season has been one of the most frustrating in my years of following Newcastle. But one thing that remained consistent was my disdain every time the Magpies played Bolton, the game was going to be a battle (lately with NUFC in the losing end). I disliked Allardyce for his tactics and because he was the coach of Bolton.
That said, the Premiership game has become a physical type defensive game. Just listen to what AC Milan and other non prem clubs have said about England. Sure, there are the flare teams like Arsenal, but the majority that are successful play hard-nosed defensive football and score goals — Two things NUFC sturggled with mightily this past year.
So Big Sam is the right man to bring Newcastle into it. I for one am looking forward to seeing who he signs. When Roeder denied Sol Campbell a chance to play at SJP last year, I couldn’t believe it. Sam will do the opposite. I expect him to bring in Sol and maybe also Hyypia to give a more veteran presence to the back 4.
Living in the U.S., I don’t see all the things Dyer does in his off time, but judging by all of the message board posters, clearly he’s worn out his welcome. I am just affraid he will go to Tottenham and flourish. Folks forget that prior to Martins arrival, Dyer was the main offensive guy for Newcastle. He can still score goals and create them, so it may be a mistake letting that go.
Nzogbia … don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Parker, Butt, Duff … pure quality and will hopefully stay healthy in 07-08.
Owen.. Martins … Ameobi — one of them has to go. My vote is for Martins. Obafemi has incredible pace and has scored some fantastic goals for the club, but time and time again he missed the easy chances. Owen, on the other hand, is a speedy, pure finisher that would have already had two goals in his two matches back from injury, save an offsides call and another cleared off the line.
Sam needs to bring in some quality. I recently saw the highlights again of Newcastle’s historic 5-0 win over MANU and that team had the likes of Ginola, Shearer, Ferdinand and others.
It would be nice to see that kind of football again.
Here’s hoping we will next year.

Couldn’t be more pleased best thing since Owen signing. Reading all this is fantastic Toon fans with optimism. Of course he is the right man for the job a real man’s man, born leader and has respect of his pears whether they like his tactics or not. But we need to give him time, wouldn’t have had ANYONE else! Although and I dearly hope I’m wrong as with Owen I know once he has proved he has proved himself and a bigger offer comes in (ENGLAND IN THIS CASE) he will move on.

Liked what he said. I think we all agree there are major problems at SJP. We need to give SA TIME!!!!! Be realistic we can’t expect to challenge for Champions league etc. At the end of the season if we can see improvements in all areas we must be happy. If we lay the foundations correctly we can then build a solid well run club. Even if we feel it is going backwards we must be patient. TIME, TIME, TIME is what is needed.
I believe as a set of supporters we are one of the best. However our expectations must be realistic we are not a top 4 side or even a top 10 side. We are a mediocore mid table club. We can argue why that is so and we will all come to the same conclusion. Poor choice of managers and the players purchased have been on the whole poor.
Part of SA remit will be to remove the deadwood, alter tactics, bring in new players and behind the scene staff then we must support him.
Don’t tell me hes doesn’t play decent football when was the last time we saw decent football? Don’t tell me he’s sold are best players the same players who have let us down on a regular basis, who can only be motivated when playing the big 4. Who sit there on fat contracts and don’t give a stuff for the club or fans. to repeat my initial comments give him TIME!!!!!!
Remember Alex Ferguson, his start at Man Utd was poor to say the least.

Toon girl,

I think we’ve got the best manager for our situation. We talk about foreign managers, but when we had one, we wanted an english one, we said they didn’t have the passion.
We wonder why Mclaren had to get the England job, because no other English manger has had regular european football. Allardyce knows this, and knows to enhance his reputation he needs to be succesfull at a big club. He knows what we demand and is not afraid to use continental methods. he likes to be at the cutting edge of improving players with technology, he’ll use anything from if he thinks it helps the players. Some would say continental in approach. He’s proved he knows how to build a good team, and get the best out of different systems tactically. He also knows at Bolton he could only dream of playing with as many quality players, yeah we’ve got some dross. But Parker, Dyer, Owen, martins, Milner, taylor, butt, given, ameobi etc.. He could never have that many international or U21’s at Bolton. He’s not likely to be playing direct football with owen and martins is he? Generally we are a team of dwarves, thats why we conceded so many off set peices. I’m all for having bigger and stronger players, it works for Chelsea and Arsenal.
The man is too intelligent to play route one with the players he’s got. Good luck Big Sam. I for one am prepared to give you the time needed to rebuild my beloved club.

WELL DONE FRED YOUR BEST SIGNING EVER,EVEN BETTER THAN SHEARER, NEWCASTLE WON NOTHING WITH SHEARER AND NEWCASTLE WILL WIN TROPHIES WITH BIG SAM

Can it get any worse like?? DOes he know what he’s getting himself into like, what is it, 4 managers in 3 years?? Roeder did the honerable thing and resigned. I honeslty wont believe anything, promises of new top players and Europe till I see it. Optimism died here a long time ago. I’m sick of empty promises. Like how many times have managers in the past promised to get better players in defense?? Yet stil Given’s overworked, I actually can’t think of a worse defense so..something has to change. Can he make it anyworse??

Mar,
“His self belief is not derived from whimsical actions, but by an astute and methodical approach from the training ground at the beginning of the week, right up until the final whistle on match day.”
Couldn’t be put any better how I’m feeling about his appointment.

Got a really good feeling about this one. I get the impression that succeed or fail, it won’t be for the want of effort or a thorough approach. I just hope that the fans and the board have the courage and the vision to give him a decent length of time to turn things around. I know we all want success tomorrow morning, but if we can give Alladyce a proper shot at this, I really feel he could be the one to sort out the long-standing problems we have.
Nice to feel hopeful again isn’t it? I’d forgotten what that felt like with Newcastle…

I wanted Big Sam last time round. He has balls, charisma and a winning attitude.
His self belief is not derived from whimsical actions, but by an astute and methodical approach from the training ground at the beggining of the week, right up until the final whistle on match day.
Roll on the good times, success is on our way!!

Its about time we had something to look forward to,what he said made a lot of sense esp the injury situations we always seem to be in, fingers crossed and i dont want to get carried away but could this finnaly be light at the end of the tunnel

i dont like to praise shepherd, but well done freddy for getting big sam in, looks like youve made 1 good decision!! just give him some money

Got to be the best man for the job at present. My concern is the size of the task he faces. Players supposedly unhappy include: Carr, Bramble, Dyer, Parker, Nzogbia, Owen, Martins. They can all pack their bags for me, however, completely rebuilding a team at the toon is made nearly impossible by our lack of patience. Since Bobby that team has needed a kick up the backside, Sam could be the man to do it but if he loses his first 3 games half the knackers in sjp will want him out! We need an identity and an ethic. Remember when nobody wanted to play us at sjp? probably not as it was ages ago but it was the case. I’d be happy to finish 10th if I was proud of my team, just cant be proud of the likes of Dyer. Sam will bring pride, passion and integrity to a team lacking all 3. That’ll do me! Tooooon!

I have to say I’m really excited about Big Sam’s appointment. I think he will sort out the dressing room and bring some passion back to the team.
The toon army must get behind the team next season, lets make St.James’ park a fortress again!

I reckon he’s certainly a step in the right direction for our club at this current time.
I didn’t want him 12 months back but times have changed & I think he’s going to do a thorough job for the Toon. He has my full support as NUFC manager.
One thing I would like to hear from him, is his expectations for our league performance over the next three years (his current contract duration). I think that as a group (Newcastle fans), we’re generally optimists that get carried away. Because of that, I think we set our own expectations unrealistically high & doom ourselves to failure. I want to know what Sam thinks we can realistically achieve?
For example:
07/08 = Get back to a top half finish
08/09 = Push for European place
09/10 = Qualify comfortably for Europe
Sent in on: May 15th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
Yup I’m sold too! I like his ‘either play for us or f@#k off!’ attitude; that ought to get the dead wood out of SJP! Sort out the training facilities, sort out the fitness levels, get rid of the persistant injuries, get ProZone in place, buy in some quality players, get rid of the shit ones, get orgaised at the back, get scoring at the front, get into the top 4, win the odd trophy, become legend! No problem!

i wasnt to sure on sam, but after listening to what he had to say in the press conference he has won me around, he seemed to have the balls to critise what has happend in the best right infront of the chairman and for me thats a great sign, if he attempts what he said he will do, and the fans are patient and let him build i can see him been newcastles greatest ever manager.
He seemed to say all the rights things and whats more they seemed to be coming from him, not what he has been told to say, i basicaly cannot wait to hear more from him, and see who he can bring in during summer.. cannot wait for new season & i aint felt this excited about toon since sir bobby
