Five Players Depart
By James Collins On Wed 16 May 2007 |
Newcastle United have confirmed that four senior players will be seeking new clubs. The players are Titus Bramble, Craig Moore, Olivier Bernard and Pavel Srnicek. Meanwhile, Oguchi Onyewu will return to Standard Liege having failed to impress while on loan. Such departures would appear to signal that new manager Sam Allardyce intends to strenghten areas of the defence over the summer.
Player Factfile:
Titus Bramble:
Signed from Ipswich Town for £4.5 million by Sir Bobby Robson in 2002, Bramble went on to play over 100 times for Newcastle, scoring six goals. His Newcastle career was typified by inconsistency. Despite numerous man of the match performances against the likes of then-Champions Chelsea, he often became the scapegoat for the club’s defensive problems as a consequence of several high-profile errors. Controversy also seemed to follow Titus, be it unwittingly get embroiled in high-profile rape allegations, or crashing his car into a house.
Olivier Bernard:
Free-agent Olivier Bernard signed for us on September 1st 2006, yet failed to appear for the club having demonstrated poor fitness levels. This second stint at the club was a shadow of his previous spell, during which he made 145 appearances and scored six goals before being released by Graeme Souness after he demanded an excessive wage. Players such as N’Zogbia need to look at how far Bernard’s star has fallen when they consider their own futures this summer.
Craig Moore:
Australian captain Craig Moore signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer by Graeme Souness after he was sacked by Borussia Moenchengladbach for beind drunk at a training session. His first season was blighted by injury, and he didn’t feature in a single game for the manager who signed him, although he went on to make eight appearances for Glenn Roeder, before playing in another 21 games this season, with injury again preventing him from playing in many matches. Moore had often spoke of his intentions to return to Australia once his contract had expired, and it can be safely assumed that he will now do just that.
Pavel Srnicek:
Czech keeper Srnicek was brought back to the club as additional cover after Shay Given was hospitalised by Marlon Harewood. Further injuries allowed Srnicek to feature, starting against a Bolton side managed by Sam Allardyce. Srnicek will best be remembered for featuring regularly for Newcastle during the Keegan era. The chant, ‘Pavel is a Geordie’ has been long cemented in St. James’ Park folklore.
Oguchi Onyewu:
‘Gooch’ was brought to the club on a loan deal by Glenn Roeder such that he didn’t have to constantly play inexperienced youngsters at centre back. It quickly became apparent however that the American was not suited to the hustle and bustle of the Premiership despite his huge frame, and he soon found his way down the pecking order. At times, he was seen on the sidelines chatting to John Barnes with his ineligibility during UEFA Cup games preventing him from playing games in which he was really needed.
Other contract news:
It would be safe to assume that Nobby Solano and Antoine Sibierski - both of whom also had contracts expiring this summer are safe for now, although it is unclear whether they have been offered contracts, or whether their future remains under consideration. Meanwhile, the other potential expiree, David Edgar recently signed up to a new two year contract.
Are you happy or sad to see the back of these five players? Who do you want to see following them out of the door? Do you have any defining memories of these players that you’d like to share? Have your say.

Howay, finally someones getting rid of the shite, but i agree with the guy below, Sam must continue clearing everyone out, baba, carr, emre, sibierski and possibly zoggy.
ive bin extremely sceptical about getting rid of owen. but if we can get 13 mill for a player who is injured alot, myt never regain his form and not wnna play for the toon, then mayb its good business.
as for oba, ive seen him be unplayable such as first leg vs AZ or at the emirates, but his good play is only shown in flashes really, its not good enough, he doesnt hav the vision to bring others into play and takes to many chances to score. maybe get rid of him too.
as for kieron, well , my favourite player (gt 3 signed shirts) but maybe every dogs had its day, he doesnt fit into the team, because he is too small and weak 2 play centraly and isnt a winger or a striker in my opinion and maybe its time to sell. we could get some good money.
and with this moeny plus shepherds, wee can get a really good team. i lyk nolan, would still love sidwell, would LOVE bridge, if not then baines is good to. think a utility player lyk jagielka would be good..up front would be good to get defoe AND bent and Ashton and Nugent, to replace sib owen and oba, definite improvement. as for teh CB postiion, its a pity we didnt go for woody, but im a big sol campbell fan, as well as other such as wes brown, heinze, oshea (one of the 3 could b available) and curtis davies
but i have full faith in sam, whcih i havent had in a newcastle manager since Bobby
Howay the ladz

Yeeessss!!! Bramble has gone, along with a few other wasters. Come on Sam dont stop now its time to kick these jokers out of the toon…Carr,Babayaro,Sibierski,Ramage,Ameobi plus if you can get £9m for Owen ,£13 for Martins and £8m for Dyer then go for it. Owen is too injury prone, Martins takes 6 chances to score a goal and Dyer doesnt fit into our team. That will give us £30 plus whatever Fatty spunks up, say £20m. Viduka on a free, Bent or Defoe for £10m, Nolan and Barton for £10m, Baines for £5m, Young for £3m. That leaves £22m to buy a couple of centre halfs and some fringe players. I hope Luque stays as I think Sam can get the best out of him. Happy days!!!

Cruel2bKind, sorry about the 11 likes, I get, carried away and type like I’m talk sometimes, it’s sounds alot better with a Cork accent. ANd em like, is usually in there somewhere anyway, back to the point.
SAM ALLARDYCE has warned that he is out to stop the ’star name’ culture at Newcastle United. The new Magpies boss believes that the club has too often targetted big name players who have not delivered.
He said: “It’s very important that we recruit the best players possible and make sure we are not always looking for the big name all the time, as Newcastle have done in the past, and that we are looking for players who are extremely good in the near future.
“There are very talented players outside this country who want to prove themselves in the Premiership.
Thank God, I thought that’d never stop. He seems to be pretty sharp. Seems to be making the right decisions..so far, the real test will come when the market opens up and obviously next season aswell. But getting rid of the unwanted 5, well 4 Pav did us a favour when we were really desperate, but the others, good luck and all that jazz like but shut the door after ye because in fairness they’ve been given more then a fair chance to proove themselves, and they just haven’t preformed consitencly.
I don’t know what to make of him really, not yet anyway. He seems like a breath of fresh air, really thinking outside the box but not getting to ahead of himself either. I don’t know, I’m going to wait before making any decisions on wether I like him or not, he’s made a good start but htes still alot to proove.

On the Subject of Allardyce’s style I’ve just read the latest offering from rampant dribbling Sycophant Alan Oliver.
Always one to suck up to the club the chairman and the manager and say nothing that might risk his most favoured status, Oliver has just written a piece telling us all that Allardyce is such a special man who always gets the best out of his players, suck suck lick lick slurrrrrp!
Maybe we should call him Andrex Oliver.
When he arrived in Toonsville earlier in the week Allardyce refused to speak to journalists from the BBC because they said nasty things about him in one of their programs.
Is there a link?
“Over here Mr Allardyce , Sir. My, thats a nice tie, and look at that neck, you must really work out, and those shoes!!!!”
“By the way, can we have an interview?”

Dodds,
Yes we have an extremely thin squad but only because of our horrendous injury record. If we could reduce our injuries to those of a normal team our squad would be sufficient. With 5 duffers gone and 4 or 5 to come in it raises the skill level within the team.
Sam has done the right thing by getting those 5 out straight away. We now need 5 players so Fred has to stump up. We now cant afford to play this last minute discount game that Fred seemed to be so keen on recently, which invariably leaves us with not enough time to get the targets we want, and we end up either short or with the like of Bernard, who we obviously only took because we had no-one else and we were in trouble.
Last August we had a full (however crap) squad. Fred’s thinking must have been along the lines of;
Let’s see if we can get Viduka
He’s worth 60 grand a month but we’ll see if we can get him for 45. Thats a saving of nearly 2 and a half million over 3 years.
If we get him - brilliant. If we dont then we still have a full squad anyway. So no problem
That’s Fred’s idea of negotiating from a position of strength.
What Sam has done straight away is force Freds hand by reducing the squad by 5. Now we have to go out and get players, and this time we cant take the chance and wait until 5 to midnight on the 31st August.
In reality we’ve only lost 3 - even though they were on the squad Pav and Bernard were deadweight. And taking Bramble off the squad has to be worth at least 10 points to us.
The last minute business with Milner and Villa showed just how unprofessional we are as an organisation.

Chris,
Whilst I agree, I’m also not a huge fan of the “hoof” it down the pitch variety, I’d rather watch the effective long ball/pass team of Allardyce, than the completely useless long ball team Roeder had us watching last season.
Hopefully Big Sam will get the squad training on their set pieces. Ours have been nothing short of diabolical for far too long.
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 11:37 am
well glad theyve gone. im pleased to say we are gonna b on the up now, but the olny thing im concerned about is the use of long ball tactics and buying unsavoury (although still good) players like DIOUF and ANELKA!!! i dont like them or bolton, but i respect the way they are suddenly a good team and good players- having said that i dont want newcastle turning into hoof it down the pitch kinda ppl
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 11:09 am
none seems to be worried by the extremly thin squad we have !$? and i wouldnt mind knowing why…
the squad is small enough, iam happy those players left, but i mean hell we could sign 11 players in the summer, and i would still consider us to have a small squad.
We have to start Signing players before we let them go, becoz if other deals colapse then we will have a even smaller squad than before, iam amazed we can even field a starting 11 sometimes !
Sam is the man to sort this out, it just depends who he brings in during the summer.

In fairness Luque has never got a good crack, he seems lethargic and out of touch, but you know their is quality there. We should keep him and use him, give him 7-8 games in a row and see if there is much improvement - If not then we can look at off loading him in January, it’s possible we have a star player already at the club who will do the business. Keep him

what a signing Olivier Bernard was abit of brilliance by Roeder there

Shaz, the only team who had the balls to take Owen was the Toon. He wont be returning to Liverpool pal. Over the moon that Bramble has been released. He mugged the last 3 managers. The job is not complete but is more difficult now because the remaining team all have contracts and with big wages. Carr,Baba, MUST leave. I would also let parker,Dyer,Zog leave for the right price. Make Butt captain and keep out of the clutches of the unwashed hoards from stinkyside and the stadium of sh*te. At last Freddie has made a good signing and at the right time.
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 9:45 am
Shaz, I completely understand you wanting Owen back at Liverpool. If Shearer had played for Liverpool I’d have felt the same. But to say he has struggled is a little strange. He’s been injured for the best part of 2 years. He’s barely kicked a ball for a season and a half. I’m certain that if he gets a run of games he’ll be just fine. He scored at a fair rate in his first spell and that was also in an average side.
Having said all of that, IF he leaves then I would hope it is to Liverpool rather than Man Utd. My feeling is he will agree to stay until Xmas to see how things pan out. If things still look bleak by Xmas I think he’ll go. Someone here said Benitez doesn’t want him, and I’ve a feeling that could be right. Benitez sold Owen to change the shape of the Liverpool team and didn’t exactly pull up any trees to get him back when he left Madrid. But…..this is a Newcastle site, not a Liverpool one. I hope he stays to spearhead a revitalised Newcastle. Here’s hoping.
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 8:25 am
I agree with you L
Luque played a more laid back game - similar to Beckham. When you think about it he doesn’t have the pace for anything else.
We forget he’s a midfielder, not a forward.
Playing for Deportivo La Coruna he scored 12 goals in his first season, mainly from substitute appearances, so we must be doing something wrong with him.
Off topic can anyone answer a question for me?
We are supposed to be thirteenth richest club in the world. We paid millions to get rid of SBR, Souness and Roeder. We paid millions to buy the likes of Boumsong, Luques Owens and Martins.
We’re in the process of returfing SJP.
Cant we afford to get rid of the slope on our pitch?
It cant be a design feature for drainage, otherwise everyother premier team would have one.
No wonder we have so many injuries, our players spend half their time running up hill!
Any bright ideas why we have a slope?
My suggestion would be that Fred put it there so that all the coins that are thrown onto the pitch are funnelled into his wallet.
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 8:04 am
I’m impressed! It’s defenitely a step in the right direction. We’ve held on to too many sub-standard players for too long.
Hopefully daft Spurs will come in with a bid for Dyer (I’d accept anything just to get him off the wage bill), according to the press West Ham are lining up an £8m bid for Parker and if a £13m-£15m offer comes in for Oba I would take that too depending on what happens with Michael Owen. Hopefully Sam will also be able to off-load wasters like Babayaro and Carr too.
With Tal Ben Haim, Sylvain Distain, Sidwell and Viduka all available on free’s and Campbell reportedly interested we could improve our squad and make a profit.
I’m probably in the vast minority here, but I’d like to see if Allardyce can get the best out of Luque. You don’t turn into a bad player overnight and in his defense he left a team who could play football and joined a team who couldn’t even pass the ball under Souness. Roeder took over and just didn’t rate him.
Either way, this is the most positive I’ve been for many years. I’m not expecting miracles, we won’t finish in the top four next season, but at least the club seems to be moving in the right direction.

Now the confusion sets in.
They look like identical twins.
They’ve both landed cushy big money jobs,
And unless they do extremely well very quickly, they’ll both be out on their arses quicker than you can say “Titus Who?”
Can anyone tell the difference between Sam Allardyce and Prime Minister to be Gordon Brown?
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 4:35 am
Is this a breath of fresh air or what?
Any chance Sam can let Shepherd go?
In my book Titus had to go ever since we found out his name was an anagram of “A Bumblers Tit”
Pav has served the club well but it turns out he’s “Pelvic Canker” or a “Plank Crevice”
I thought Moore could have been salvaged. A dog in defence? “More A Corgi”
5 players out the door before anyone comes in, but no doubt he’s already made the phone calls. Fred’s stunned because he believed that that transfer window was only open for 10 minutes on the 31st August.
It would be nice to see a team rise from the ashes that can at least be recognised as a Newcastle team, and not just Bloton wearing the great Black and White
Sam’s name raises a few possibilities.
Alas, Calm Dyer
Calmed Salary
Say, Camel Lard ( a bit unfair but made me laugh)
Made all scary
The last one is pretty scary, but for once I’m prepared to say stuff the anagrams - according to the power of anagrams we are heading for a “Sadly Calm Era”

I think all of the defenders let go have had ample time enough to play well week in and week out, but through either injury or lack of interest they have all made mistakes that have led to matches being lost or points dropped. Hopefully this puts the fear of God into all the players to play with their hearts or they could very well follow this group out the door. Players like Dyer and Owen should want to stay and be part of a better team that becomes successful with some proper leadership. I think a lot of fans will put up with a mid table finish (if thats what it takes for a first season) if the team at least competes every game. Only KK and SBR have had sides that at least you knew if they lost the other team had to earn it and play well. Looking forward to the changes this summer and next season. Howay the lads and Big Sam.
Sent in on: May 17th, 2007 at 3:16 am
Shaz, you bring up some good points. But Michael Owen seems to really understand the fans in Newcastle. And most of us love him already, if only for that (he has and will contribute alot). He’s struggled so far for us, but I’d struggle too if I was 5′8″ and the only service I got in a game was a long ball from the defense and a cross or two. Once our defense gets sorted and the midfield can stop playing keep up with them and fixing their mistakes, Owen’ll have good service again. We just need to get off his back. Dyer too. He’s a great player, but Newcastle’s current style of play (sit on yer arse at the back and hoof things upfield on occasion) doesn’t benefit him at all, and that’s not his fault. Same with Oba, who, given, is a little shakey in front of goal, but he’ll improve.
My point is that hopefully within the next two years, “Big” Sam will have turned this club into something other than a mercenary haven, and there will be other reasons to stay. I have great respect for Liverpool as a side, and I wish you all the best in your final, but I’m all for giving Michael a chance in the Toon.
Howay the Lads!

hey shaz mate, the whole point is that sam can motivate stars with big egos (anelka, diouf) like he has at bolton, thats why weve got him.oh and no matter how much you want owen back he aint leaving, and liverpool dont even want him anyway.Your “Genius” Benitez, (thats a joke) doesnt want him.Man Utd are interested but trust me, im in the know, he wont be going even to them, he feels he ows us another two years, and as for the top four, we WILL be there at the end of 08/09 season, and you still wont have won the league.Hope ac milan stuff you, and they will!

Big Sam has a huge ego, i don’t think he will be able to handle the press asking him questions all the time about Owen.If Michael stays the speculation will never go away especially when things will inevitabley start goin gwrong. There is nothing great about that club other than the fact they have Michael Owen on their books and passionate fans.ewcastle will always have financial clout, but if you haven’t won a trophy for as long as Newcastle haven’t then the chances of doing so become slimmer and slimmer. It is hardly rocket science. Some people may think Sam will be able to get the merceneries out of door but if Newcastle stop paying big wages, you will never be able to get players the calibre of Damien Duff,Scott Parker and Emre ever again.Yes, those players have under achieved at your club, but your defence is a joke, that is not their fault. And from the outside that is what the national perception of Newcastle United is ,that they pay well.Non geordies don’t give a damn about your passionate fans.I am not saying it is right that these players come for the money, but mercerneries don’t exactly have a conscience , so if they don’t play well on a saturday afternoon, don’t expect them to lose any sleep over it.And the cycle continues hence the reason it will inevitably go wrong.as you have probabley gathered the only reason i come on this blog is because i want Michael back at Anfield where he belongs.I was gutted when he left and i have sat through way too many Real Madrid games and to a lesser extent Newcastle games.(Atleast Real Madrid were good to watch.)I think that is what they call a conflict of interest. If i do come across as serious it is because i hate seeing him in a Newcastle shirt. He had a great career but it has been in decline as a result of being at Newcastle. His passion for the game is gone,I am certain it would return if he came back to Anfield.I don’t think owen should stay. When he meets up with England team mates in the summer, they will be talking about Premier League trophy or Cup medals.Hopefully Stevie and Carra will be talking about another Champions league medal. What will Michael say-Next season we(newcastle) will be trying to get into a UEFA cup place. The guy deserves so much better.Newcastle won’t be anywhere near the top four next season, with or without Michael.

So pleased shambles is on his, I still remember the Liverpool game, when he was brought on as a sub and the Liverpool fans cheered!!!
I think big Sam is the best thing to happen to the club for years. Let’s just hope he’s given time to rebuild the team, and return at bit of pride to SJP.
Exciting times ahead, can’t wait to see what happens next season brings.

Hallelujah! He’s not hanging about is he?! Sorry Titus, but you’ve been on borrowed time for years. Good luck and all that, but good riddance too.
Prediction: I think he’s lining up several foreign players we’ve never heard of. Don’t think it’ll be Campbell, Davis or anyone else we know… Cannot possibly be worse than the likes of Bramble, Moore or the God-Awful “Gooch”.

The other 4 released players were not needed.

Allardyce is now in my opinion a God because he has got rid of that idiot TITus Shambles. Chris L i know what you mean but i think he has also cost the club all of his transfer fee if not more by his shambolic performances, resulting in lost matches. Over the past 2 seasons i would not be suprised if 60% of all the goals conceded where in someway through his lack of a functional brain.
Anyway Allardyce is already moving the right way by getting rid of the expensive wasters the next ones to go should be carr, babayaro and ramage.

That’s like, 11 “Like’s” like.
But your point about Ireland is a sound one.
Sent in on: May 16th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
What are the chances that Bramble will go somewhere else and become fantastic like..I wouldn’t know if I’d laugh or cry. No seriously, in the past season lets say, and thats even pushing it like cause I’ve a crapy memory so bare with me, in the past season only once (there could of been more times that I can’t think of) but at the top of my head, only once do I remember him playing really well. That speaks for itself like, or else my crapy memory. I know our defense is crapy but by the time he’s finished doing his clearing out job we’ll have no defense left..ah well. Allardyce, (that’s like the 100th time I’ve had to copy and paste his name, I can never remember it.) seems to me that he’s someone who thinks outside the box.
Maybe just a sugestion here like but instead of frantically looking up and down England for players, maybe if he took a look at some of the Irish players. like some of the clubs here have some really good talent, like Cork City, thats where Reading got Kevin Doyle from, for €117,000 he’s now worth something like 8 million and is one of the seasons top scorer. Taking Cork as an example (cause it’s where I’m from,) From Cork City or other clubs in Cork have come, Kevin Doyle, Shane Long (neither Cork man cut their teeth with Cork City), Stephen Ireland, Liam Miller, Colin Doyle, Stephen O Halloran, etc..all Cork players, some one else from Cork..(Ramblers) has made a pretty big name from himself, em..oh ya Roy Keane.
Ireland have suddenly so much young talent to pick from on the international list and alot of them are players who are or mostly were from Irish clubs. Only a couple of people have coped on to this. Steve Coppell, Roy Keane, Mick McCarthy..etc.
I don’t know it’s just a thought like, not that were to crazy about the idea of them stealing our best talent like but still it’s an idea thats really paid of for some clubs and it’s thinking like that that makes (or breaks..it could back fire) managers.

good moves from allardyce
bold, but confident moves
now he has plenty of time to sign a new back line
hopefully that will include 2 centrebacks, a left back, but right back seems to be nobby’s now
maybe a left winger should the zog leave
but hopefully sam will talk him into staying

I reckon that over the 5 years we’ve had Bramble, the £4.5m has been paid off. Accountants use some depreciation formula & under that method Bramble was probably paid off after 3/4 years. The money men could also look at it as ‘he got the goal that got us into Europe this season’ which was an adventure that would have paid the club far more then the £4.5m outlay.
Chin up Titus & good luck where ever you end up. I for one hope you don’t have one of your good days when we next come across you.
Sent in on: May 16th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
This is good news and I’m not sure but potentially 70k a week off our wage bill straight away! Bramble cannot complain, you can’t have a blinder every 4 or 5 games and make costly mistakes at this level. It is such a shame as you saw what he was capable of. Pav did us a favour and we thank him for that. The others - who cares, I’m just glad they’ve gone! Sam said he wanted players with the right mental attitude and Bramble certainly wasn’t strong enough mentally. It is dissapointing we can’t recoup any of the £5mill but its all cleared up now!! We now need some rock solid guys who are playing week in and week out and not whinging. Bring it on Big Sam!!!
Sent in on: May 16th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Glad to see the back of Bramble.Time to bring in someone to bring out the best of young Taylor (Campbell)lets not forget the full back positions. We need players who are recognised full backs and not central defenders.
Cant wait for the new season.Good luck to Big Sam

I’m only sad to see Gooch go; I think that while he made mistakes he still had potential to become a good center back…then again, I’m an American so I was rooting for him to do good. The rest of the 5 players were just biding their time in Tyneside (especially Bramble) so I will be glad to see them go. However, Big Sam better have all replaced by August…I would hate to see all these players gone but no suitable replacements…
Sent in on: May 16th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
I think the next players to go will have to be Luque, Babayaro, Carr, possible Solano cus I think his days are over. But Id prolly keeps sibs for another yr jus for cover.
Sent in on: May 16th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
None of it’s a shock, but I’d have liked him to have kept Bramble on a ‘month to month’ deal to see if he could sort him out. But it all rings true with what Sam’s been saying about getting in players that have the right mental attitude to play at St James’. With that in mind, Bramble had to go. The others are no big loss.

This is great sign, i cannot wait for the season to start i was also DELIGHTED ! x 100 million to hear the SA stated he was wanting to have his new Squad in place BEFORE the pre-season starts to get practice in something which i havnt seen Newcastle do in years, as we always seem tos ign players 5 days before end of the window -.- god no’s why…
Sam is saying all the right things, at this point in time, and i think he is going to be our best manager in decades, if the fans give him time to build, which alot of Newcastle fans dont do, we now have a manager capable of great things if fans will only let him implment his changes over the next few seasons well be a major club once more.
P.S glad thsoe 5 players left thery were a waste of space, now to see some TEAM signings and not just ” Big ” [ Small ] Names.

Good job done at last!! what a great manager we have! looking forward to exciting times and football.I like his ambition, his approach regarding fitness … and the fact that the players respect his achievments at bolton. Previous managers didn’t get that respect from players ( GR & GS). His “long ball” football tag is nonsense. He’s there to use winning tactics and if that means using long ball tactics to win a game then so be it.Espacially against teams like Newcastle that are quite short…. hope that changes by the way!!

Praise the Lord!!! Bramble has finally gone!!! Time and time again Bramble has been given chances he doesn’t deserve with every new manager. I am glad to see Big Sam has had the sense to let go the weak links in the team!
