Buying From Our Premiership Rivals 2007: Arsenal
By James Collins On Thu 21 Jun 2007 |
In the return of an old summer feature, Newcastle-Online will be checking out our rivals to assess what players in their squad are both available, and good enough to play for Newcastle United. With a busy summer coming up, we hope to provide intriguing alternatives to the names the media keep bringing up. Proceeding alphabetically as always, we first turn our attentions to London Woolwich, these days known as Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has over recent years kept together a large squad of players, with a first team brimming with continental talent, and a copious amount of talented youngsters waiting to force their way into the first team. In fact, the Arsenal squad can be divided into several categories. The first two, namely the indispensable first teamers such as Thierry Henry, and the youngsters currently breaking into the first team squad such as Abou Diaby, can for now be considered as out of reach for any club outside of the European elite, as Wenger would be determined to keep hold of these players.
There are players however, who previously considered as youngsters on verge of securing a regular first team place, have not quite met Arsene Wenger’s high expectations, and now find themselves behind the newest batch of youngsters in the pecking order. One prime example would be Mathieu Flamini, who has of late been struggling to feature for the Gunners. This is a player, who over recent seasons had received critical acclaim for his performances, yet such acclaim has never been enough to convince Wenger, and it is clear that Flamini does not possess the technical ability to play for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.
This does not mean that he is a bad player however. In fact, he could be an asset for the majority of Premiership clubs. A defensive midfielder by trade, he can also put in a good shift in the full back positions if required. Such versatility would really help us plug gaps in the squad without breaking the bank. As of this moment, we only have three or maybe four central midfielders depending on what Allardyce wants to do with Kieron Dyer, and we are thus perhaps a bit short in this area. Nicky Butt is not getting much younger, but by signing Flamini, our central midfield would most likely be sufficient for the next few seasons.
Another typical squad player at Arsenal is the youngster who never gets the chance to feature in the Premiership. Thus Arsene Wenger is very receptive to loaning the player in question to a rival club. If they do well, they may get another chance at Arsenal, but if they don’t, they often end up doing well at another Premiership club. Players that never made it at Arsenal, but who have done well at other clubs include Steve Sidwell, David Bentley, and Matthew Upson. These three players have all arguably been the best player at one of the clubs they have played for recently. This is further evidence that not making it at Arsenal is not necessarily an indication of lack of ability.
So which youngsters at Arsenal could Wenger be happy to see leave? Justin Hoyte could be one such player. The England U21 international is a strong powerful full back, who would add significant height to our back line. Admittedly, he would be a bit of a risk, given that his loan spell at Sunderland wasn’t a roaring success, but he seems to have matured since then. Recently, we have been a bit too impatient with young players, and it is possible that Justin Hoyte could help sort out the full back berth in the future. For what its worth, he certainly outperformed popular Newcastle transfer target Leighton Baines at the European Under-21 championships. At his age, Wenger may be ready to sell rather than loan.
Armand Traore and Johan Djourou are another two defenders that could have good futures ahead of them. If we find ourselves in urgent need of additional defenders in August, they may be worth a loan move, but hopefully Allardyce will have achieved his intentions of signing more experienced defenders.
However, the best signing we could make from Arsenal this summer would be their former vice-chairman, David Dein, whom recently resigned from Arsenal. If Ashley wants to have a chief executive with previous experience of running a very successful and efficient football club, David Dein is the best man for the job.
Would you like to see these players at Newcastle? Anyone else at Arsenal that you would like us to sign? Have your say.

Why sign babel and sneijder for mega-bucks and stick them on the bench. Bargain deals, such as geremi, could be used instead, to save money to buy more quality additions to the squad.
By the way, I do not rate Flaminu one bit. And who is borre?

Unfortunately I think it’s more of who will Arsenal buy from us?
Owen has been great against Arsenal for Liverpool in the past and apparently they are interested in Martins. Our best bet of someone from Arsenal was last season with Campbell, I don’t think any others will come.
I’m looking forward to see who they get to replace Henry, or will they suffer like Newcastle did last season.

GunnerPete writes in saying:
Hello to my second favourite city. As a Gunner of 57 years, I think its time for a Geordie revival. Sorry we cannot sell you our top players but I would think Flamini, Ljuenburg to buy and a few to loan would help.
Sadly though, with fat Sam now there, football will go out the window. There will be an influx of tall hardnuts who know every dirty trick in the book. This may well win a few trophies but you will lose resoect from the rest. Mind you, nowdays its trophies that count!
Good luck for this season.
Hey Pete, Still sore that Big Sam has kicked your arses on numerous occasions, 6 pts for the toon against the arsenal, Mid table for the gunners now HENRY has jumped ship, soon be Wenger & Fabregas too

For our summer transfers, we can exchange Michael Owen for Jermaine Defoe, he would be an excellent signing for our club.

Let’s get Micah Richards from Man City, offer Owen in straight swap if need be, perfect timing as Mourinho is being starved of funds and Man Utd have spent Fergusons budget. He is the best fullback in the country with a long England career ahead of him so go get him, until we start spending big bucks on defenders nobody will take us serious.

A welcome return of the “Buying From” series. Well done James & good call on Dein, he would be a very good acquisition for the club. Not sure it’ll happen though sadly.
I would imagine that arsenal would probably swap just about any of their players (except one or two obvious exceptions) for Owen, so in reality none of them are out of reach other then they might not want to come to us from the Arse.

AusGunner - What about the links to Bakary Sagna? If he were to arrive wouldn’t it push Hoyte further down the pecking order?

With our one defensive midfield option coming in the shape of the ageing, yet competent, Butt (whom i wouldn’t be surprised to see appointed Captain); Flamini is an excellent shout.

Ya, take Flamini, he can really do a good job for you. He’s a good player, it’s just that Arsenal is a technical team and he lacks that technical ability, so he finds himself behind Gilberto, Fabregas, Diaby, Denilson and Hleb. If he doesn’t come then it will be ‘cos of your new coach, the man from the long ball and physical game school. Another player you should consider is Senderos,he has seriously fallen out of favour and don’t think he’ll have an impact in the coming season. He had his chance and blew it. He’s excellent in a 4-5-1 formation or any defensive set up; his play does not suit Arsenal’s attacking game and upfield defending approach. He can also do a good job for you in the kind of structure Sam wants to put in place. However, forget about HOYTE and DJOUROU ‘cos they will feature next season.

Yo uguys can take Freddie off our hands. In regards to the Walcott loan, you have a better chance of Owen playing 30+ Premier games next season than landing Walcott.

If I remember correctly Hoyte just recently signed a long term contract with us so I don’t think your chances of buying him are that good, plus we need him as cover for Eboue for the African Cup of Nations. Don’t see Dein going to another club either really. Flamini would be a very good signing for you though. Then again, something tells me that Fat Sam just hates Arsenal and would be reluctant to consider a player from us. Wenger probably dislikes him too. Might be silly grounds to dismiss any transfer dealings but you never know.

Flamini won’t play at full back. He won’t do it. Even if you put him on the bench.
What kind of utility player refuses to play out of position?
Answer: The kind with strings. Muppet

Flamini would be a great signing, even if just on loan, he has proven that he can do a job in several different positions for Arsenal and would be like signing two players for us, seems like an allardyce type of signing aswell. Good shout
David Dein would be the perfect man to take on a chief executive role for us and oversea the transfers etc, still leaving Freddie as chairman but giving him less power over deals with agents etc

who said big Phil’s been transfer listed? If you’ve got this from some pile of toss site like Tribal Football, then it’s most likely to be their usual advert for prime cut bollocks. Lots of my fellow Gooners moan about Phil, but there are lots of us who think his best is yet to come. Adams made lots of mistakes when he was younger, but I don’t think he could have been played at fullback and not expect to cock something up like Phil didin the FA Cup replay against Blackburn. I don’t think Newcastle has much hope of getting any AFC players on loan, simply because Arsene seems to want to blood them in teams where there is limited competition for places (Sunderland, Birmingham, Derby etc.).
Sent in on: June 21st, 2007 at 5:19 pm
I highly doubt that Dein will go to you. He’s still itching to get back onto the Arsenal board, and I believe that his interests are purely within AFC. He’s a fan, and I can’t see a fan as big as Dein is going to another club.
Apparently, this rumour started because Dein and Ashley are neighbours! The newspapers will find any link to fill some column inches.
Good article, though.

Hi
I watched Ryan Babel yesterday and i got convinced that he plays arsenal’s game.He was strong, striking, running in flanks and very defensive. His speed is perfect and is only 20 years. At 6million the price is good.I think he is better than 34 million Nani of man united.

I’m glad to see that some Arsenal fans have taken the time out to read this article and add some comments.
As well as the comment function, we also have a forum (accessible at the top of the page), and welcome fans from all clubs that aren’t on a blatant wind up mission.
Currently, we have regular posters from Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool, (Tottenham), as well as fans of some of our opponents across Europe.
Non-Newcastle discussion is welcome.

jay simpson only 18 years old bags of pace and strength will be great on loan

Realistically you could get Flamini and he would be a very good signing for anybody. i dont understand why we dont play him more. We have class in midfield but oftne lack the heart and workrate he provides. he can also play at left or right full back so he would be a great asset to you.
Sent in on: June 21st, 2007 at 4:05 pm
I think Flamini could do really well for you though I believe he favours a move to the continent, preferably Italy. I don’t think Walcott will be loaned but I could be wrong. Depends on what happens with Henry I think

Flamini and Dein would beb great and why not try and sign hoyte and denelson

I think Mathieu Flamini and David Dein would be 2 brilliant signings and 2 that could happen.
I think with Dein and big sam we have a good partnership that could take Newcastle back to were we belong challenging for the title especially with big mikes money. I hope we sign Curtis Davis and Anton Ferdinand this summer as we would then have Englands 3 best central defenders under the age of 21. Anthony Vanden Borre would be a great signing for riht back outstanding performances in the Euro championship U21 for belgium with Baines at left back means great defence. Midfield we need to get rid of dyer and duff(wasters) and get in some midfielders with the fighting spirit Newcastle need Flamini would be good we should also try get Sneijder and Vander Vaart and up front get Owen out before he devalues more ans get babel in.

I’m not so sure about any of the players, I think we could buy far better from elsewhere. As it stands I wouldn’t think we’d need Walcott. We have 4 top strikers in Owen, Viduka, Martins and Ameobi, and it wouldn’t be worth bringing anymore in on loan. If however Owen and/or Martins decide to leave I think it could be a possibility. Rigters and Babel are being sounded out though and could be promising players for the future, and they’d be proper signings.
Very good shout for the ex-chairman though. I’m not quite sure what’s happening with Fat Fred, but if Ashley has the power to dispose of him instead of keeping him on, he should do so right away. He just loves the publicity too much and cant bare to let go.

Hoyte signed a new long-term deal recently, so that one is practically a no-goer.
Unless that was done to boost his transfer value…….
Senderos is available and good thing about him he has authority and leadership skills. Lack of pace on the turn could put anyone off admittedly but a chance to get a full international with CL and World Cup experience for a cut-price fee doesn’t come around too often.
There are a few squaddies available like you mention but I suspect Newcastle are looking for players to improve their side rather then just fill in gaps which some of these players will undoubtedly do

Lets get Henry and Fabregas from them! Realistically - Flamini would be an excellent signing and how about Walcott on loan?
