Newcastle United is a unique club. Read about Newcastle’s supporters in the news, and the likelihood is that, more often than not, you’ll find the prefix ‘long-suffering’ attached. Perhaps those journalists have just been listening to the wrong fans; although, in fairness to them, a certain undercurrent of matyr-ish stoicism seems to flow throughout our current fanbase; to be a Newcastle supporter is to be suffering!

Now that Glenn Roeder is our full-time manager for at least the next 2 years (providing all goes well) it is perhaps time we looked at him and his credentials at closer quarters, to offer a critical judgment of our new manager. I don’t know about you but as caretaker, I always thought it to be unfair and inappropriate to assess him in a good, bad and ugly type fashion. Now though, he’s fair game where I’m concerned so here goes…

First things first, here’s to two great years with Glenn Roeder as manager. The last few months have been a breath of fresh air. He has got the job and he gets my support 100%. Aside to the fact the guy is a survivor and all that blah blah blah the fact is he has got the club back on track after 18 months of doom and gloom. The terraces at St. James have been electric of late and Glenn deserves the job.

While I don’t rate Roeder as any kind of saviour or to be particularly what we need right now at United not to mention a deep rooted concern behind the motives in appointing him, I must say, watching his official unveiling brought a smile to my face and if anyone does deserve the job - it is that man Roeder.
