Well it was sunny at least! How many of us went away from St. James’ feeling robbed? The initial moments ( well until the day or so after really) of a bitter taste left in the mouth has now subsided and looking after watching the game on t.v. highlights it did appear we were well and truly sucker-punched by a mediocre Fulham outfit. Glenn Roeder’s black and white army helped themselves to an opening day 2-1 victory against last season’s surpise outfit Wigan Athletic. In a rain-drenched St. James’ Park it was Shola Ameobi’s athletic second half winner that gave the Magpies three-points and their first home win of the season.

Nicky Butt was the hero of the hour as Newcastle fought back to clinch a 3-3 draw against a classy Villarreal outfit. Two late half headers from the ex-Manchester United and England midfielder saw Newcastle steal an unlikely draw after being outclassed by their Spanish opponents for most of the match. There were many plusses for Glenn Roeder to take from the game, however, also evident were the all too frequent individual errors which seem to curse the Toon backline.

First things first, here’s to two great years with Glenn Roeder as manager. The last few months have been a breath of fresh air. He has got the job and he gets my support 100%. Aside to the fact the guy is a survivor and all that blah blah blah the fact is he has got the club back on track after 18 months of doom and gloom. The terraces at St. James have been electric of late and Glenn deserves the job.
