Conclusion?
Back in April when Graeme Souness announced he was looking to sign
players with Premiership experience, or players who could play in
the hurly burly fast paced environment that is our top-flight, we
donned our caps and became unofficial scouts for the club in our quest
to aid our Scottish manager in his quest to find some proper players.
Our search took us to all of our then Premiership rivals and saw a
stop-off in Holland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, France and Italy.
Having bored and surprised some of you lot and upset a few Everton
and Spurs fans along the way, finally we have came to an end of our
20 part series. All that is left is to summarise a list of players
who we have, in one way or another, identified as players available,
who could be available and who we could potentially attract to St.
James' Park. So if you're reading Graeme...
Goalkeepers:
Brad Friedel, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Antti Niemi.
Defenders:
Matthew Upson, Robert Huth, Wayne Bridge, Gregory Vignal, Sylvain
Distin, John O'Shea, Franck Queudrue, Tomas Ujfalusi, Jorge Andrade,
Hatem Trabelsi, Patrice Evra, Miguel, Young-Pyo Lee.
Midfielders:
Nolberto Solano, Gareth Barry, Brett Emerton, Stylianos Giannakopoulos,
Scott Parker (signed), Geremi, Luis Boa Morte, Steed Malbranque, Quinton
Fortune, Bolo Zenden, George Boateng, Zoltan Gera, Edgar Davids, Belizoglu
Emre (on his way), Andy Van der Meyde, Stephen Appiah, Mauro Esposito,
Santiago Solari, Juan Roman Riquelme, Daniel de Ridder, Sylvain Wiltord,
Juninho Pernambucano, Owen Hargreaves, Jaoa Moutinho, Rudolf Douala.
Strikers:
Walter Pandiani, Mateja Kezman, Andy Johnson, Collins John, Milan
Baros, Alan Smith, Dean Ashton, Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane, Robert
Earnshaw, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Javier Saviola, Diego Forlan, Kahveci
Nihat, Dirk Kuyt, Jan-Klaas Huntelaar, Dimitar Berbatov, Liedson.
Conclusion?
With Parker already bagged and Emre on his way, it would seem that
Souness would like to bring in at least 5 more players as he rebuilds
for next season. Left-back, right and left wing and two strikers are
a priority now having strengthened the central midfield area. And
from the above lists, there is no real reason why the Scot can not
bring in the right players in the right positions. Players that will
transform the team, add quality, freshen things up and provide depth
to the squad.
If the calibre of players to come are of the same quality and pedigree
of Parker and Emre, then there remains cause for optimism ahead of
the new season. Let us hope Souness and Co. get their men and we can
really move on and put last season to bed and build for the future.
