Your Shout: Newcastle Utd 4-2 AZ Alkmaar - Have Your Say!
By A.K. Dholakia On Thu 8 Mar 2007 |
A crazy and enthralling encounter saw Newcastle develop a speedy 3-0 lead through an own goal from Steinsson and goals from Dyer and Martins. Former Rangers man Shota Arveladze pulled one back, before Martins slotted in Newcastle’s fourth. A cross fired in at Taylor’s arm saw a penalty awarded to AZ, and though Given saved Dembele’s first effort, Koevermans rebound found the net to give AZ Alkmaar two crucial away goals. With both attacks looking lethal, the tie is set up for a pulsating and exciting finish in one week’s time.
What did you think of this mad match? Did Roeder triumph over Van Gaal, or were the away goals the defining statistic of the game? How should we approach next week? Should we concentrate on keeping it tight? Who should we play? Who performed well? Who didn’t?
There’s a lot of meat on this one, so by all means, have your say…!

Newcastle United out of Europe out of flavour a total shambles Ive never seen a team lay down to an important game in the clubs history a very very poor performance in Holland no bravery on the pitch not one player linked well and if the united faithful think glen roeder is their man then darker days beckon and injuries are not to blame Newcastle have some great players but they have no team spirit no inspirations and were they go from here is only down it breaks my heart Ive never loved another club Im Newcastle through and blue but my support is for a lost cause rest in peace Newcastle United allways in our thoughts?

Great result and an entertaining game all round. They were quite a tidy team but their back four were awful, so we dont want to get too cocky. I thought that Duff and Parker improved greatly over some of their recent shaky games. Martins stole the show with his two goals but I thought Nicky Butt was excellent again last night. Its far from over though. We all know Newcastle tend to be at their worst when were fully expected to win. Hopefully some of the senior players will write that home to the younger players so we dont get too cock sure.

jon gretan jonsson, take Martins out for Luque??? are you Van Gaal in disguise?
and butt out for emre?? we needed solid defending so who should remain on - duff or butt? emre hasnt played for 2 month so which postion is less dangerous to put him in if hs is rusty?
the boys did well. including roeder with his choices.

Everyone played well. The defence overall is quite good although we did concede 2 goals from 2 errors. That is why we cannot make mistakes. The first goal could be dealt with with better marking. I hope we would not make anymore such mistakes. Solano should continue at right-back in the future. He did so well compared to Carr. Hope that we can keep a clean sheet against AZ in the away tie. If we do, let’s hope we can win the cup! Way to go toon!

Its great to see Newcastle play like they can, hope to see it every home game with that tempo.Parker was outstanding and Butt played great, Duff looked sharper than he has in a while, and the back four looked pretty solid, and of course the obvious praise to Martins,Dyer,Sibierski. Also though Carr did a good job at left back, hope he continues to turn over a new leaf.Never a penalty!!!Now lets take some of that positive attitude Roeder was talking about on Channel 5 at half time in the Tottenham game:
“Most people,i dont know why, seem to lead their lives in a negative way,i’m a very positive person, and i surround myself with those types of people aswell, and we’ll go there with a two goal lead, they’ve got to attack us, they need to come at us and score a couple of goals, and i believe that will give us a chance to counter-attack with the space that they leave, and with Oba Martins pace, hopefully we can go and nick a goal ourselves out there. It would hav been nice to get 5-2 with Oba Martins chance, but nevermind, so many positives for us came out of this game for us, they’re a good team.”
COME ON THE LADS!!!!

I don’t know whether to be happy with the win or disappointed with the 2 away goals. probably feel a bit of both.
the performance in the first half was reminisence of the spurs and villa home games when we scored a few within the first few minutes.
the second a bit laxidasic to say the least, no tempo, no width, no pressure and Az were allowed to play their game.
next week will be a battle, they only need to win 2-0, the first goal will be crucial in my eyes, and we need to get it, or else its just going to be attack after attack against us next, and us the fans will be going through the motions a bit, allez feyenoord in the champions league!
never a dull nail biting time with newcastle united is there?
fingers and everything else crossed for next week!

i didnt think it was penalty, or very harsh although i aint seen replays like so…
ok result but if they score one goal in next leg it counts for nothing

I really think that the team played extremely well in the first-half. The midfield and strikers played really well, and the defence played good.
The 2nd half was decent, but AZ`s goal was very poor defending following the penalty.

What was roeder thinking not to put Luque in for martins when he got kickt in the leg.
That was the big no no.
And to take duff out. Good to se Emre back.
Butt out for Emre i say.
The spanian is the one, he is the Palermo Heroe.
And he should be in the team. We know he can score, so let him do that for us. Give Martins a break.
