I did put one on my CV for this last round of interviews. Unfortunatley Jim, never had to do it when i was applying for college so cant really help from that perspective.

I think University lecturers are just like any other people though (they might be looking out for something striking in the applicant but that cannot be forced), they need to be given the message quickly. On my own personal statement i have 3 bullet points describing what i think are my 3 unique selling points. When you do write it, try to think about is as 3 messages that you want the reader to have about you. It can be in any format you want but as long as you keep it focussed and simple then you wont go far wrong.
