Yes, from that eyecatching subject title, you know you've happened upon an interesting thread!

I'm putting together my application for University in these next few weeks, and it has come to the time where I have to write my personal statement...

I've barely ever written about myself in any form, and I'm not sure:

what to put?

Should I big myself up monumentally, or keep it modest?

do I talk about things that dont directly relate to the uni application? (like who inspired me to go to university, how Ive always wanted to take this academic route etc..)

Continual prose or bullet points, headings and short sentences?

I think you should base it around the following:

There's a guy in the place
He's got a bittersweet face
And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode
His friends call him Eezer and he is the main geezer
And he'll vibe about the place like no other man could
He's refined, he's sublime, he makes you feel fine
Though very much maligned and misunderstood
But if you know Eezer he's a real crowd pleaser
He's ever so good, he's Ebeneezer Goode
You can see that he's mischievious, mysterious and devious
When he circulates amongst the people in the place
But once you know he's fun and something of a genius
He gives a grin that goes around from face to face to face
Backwards and then forwards, forwards and then backwards
Eezer is the geezer who loves to muscle in
That's about the time the crowd all shout the name of Eezer
As he's kotcheled in the corner, laughing by the bass bin...

Yes, of course I did, but back in those days entrance to University wasn't for the masses and wasn't done by application form, just a select few via scholarships which were handed out according to the quantity and quality of fellatio you were prepared to administer to the Academic seniors.

It's back then that I learnt the bitter lesson: you've got to suck seed to succeed.

Did you go to school with Stephen Fry? Laughing

Have you never had to write about yourself? For a job or anything?

Mate, of course I have! The number of job applications I've filled in over the years has equipped me with a refined ability to hint subtly at my greatness through the construction and deployment of languid metaphor and euphemism. It's all about testiculation. Yes

Jim, I started mine off saying basically why I had chosen the course(s) I had applied for, what interested me about them, and what the future prospects of pursuing them could be.  I then went on to talk about past experiences of Uni life (visits, G&T classes and that).  And finally I wrote in detail about my hobbies and interests and other experiences.
