Episode 2.09: What Kate Did : Episode Centric - Kate
Aired: 30th November 05
:4star:

Description: Kate's crime is finally revealed, and it's... Totally predictable. But quite well done, I guess. The flashbacks here cover her crime, as mentioned, and also her early-days on the run from the law. Be sure to look out for Sayid's guest appearence on the tele, although it's as brief as the rest of his appearences this season aside from Collision; blink and you'll miss it.

On the island, Kate is going insane again. Let's face it; she's still hot, so who actually cares? Anyway, her and Jack share their hippy-love for one another behind a bush in the jungle, but as usual, she takes the huff with him and Jack cries again (yes, again). Naturally, we have a big cliffhanger ending, as has become standard before a 5 week break, and also an exciting Eko-Locke love-in, which helps to make this episode great, rather than just good.

[FIVE WEEK BREAK]

Episode 2.10: The 23rd Psalm : Episode Centric - Mr Eko
Aired: 11th January 06
:5star:

Description: This episode sheds more light on the god-like Mr. Eko, and gives us an insight into his former life as a Nigerian warlord, as he stomps off into the jungle in search of his past. En-route, he arrogantly stares down smokey smokelton, the monster, who runs for his life shortly after scanning Eko with some sort of electronic nano-stuff, and realising how beastly he is.

Elsewhere, Claire begins to lose faith in heroin-addict Charlie after the Nigerian GIANT Eko begins to question her about the Virgin Mary statue. Locke and Mikey do some convenient target practice on THE CAMP'S LIMITED f****** FOOD SUPPLY out in the jungle -  Mikey is a born killer, which is handy for future plotlines. And Kate finally gives the recovering hero Sawyer a much-needed haircut.

Aired: 18th January 06
:3star:

Description: Jack, Locke and Sawyer track down a determined Michael, after he heads into the jungle toward the dreaded "Others" in search of Walt. En route however, they have an encounter they could have all done without.

Sun, meanwhile, has a surprising reaction to Jin's desire to join the search party, and Hurley and Charlie commiserate over the age-old conundrum of "what women want."

We also learn more about some of the problems that plagued Jack's marriage to Sarah, and discover the reason for it's conclusion.

Episode 2.12: Fire and Water : Episode Centric - Charlie
Aired: 25th January 06
:2star:

Description: When Charlie's vividly surreal dreams lead him to believe Claire's baby - Aaron - is in danger, Locke suspects Charlie may be using again. Cue weird drug scenes, and an array of s*** english accents during flashbacks (which, by the way, are so pointless that I won't even bother mentioning them).

Sawyer, meanwhile, encourages Hurley the Hut to act upon his attraction to liar Libby, who claims that Hurley stood on her foot whilst boarding the plane, despite sitting in completely different sections to one another. Stupid bint.

Finally, Jack Bender reminds us of his apparent HATRED for John Locke, by once again doing that camera-rotating-around-his-face-to-the-tune-of-evil-music trick that seems OH SO familliar. Oh yeah.. Remember the ending of Tabula Rasa in season one? Yep, that was directed by Jack Bender as well. All Bender needs to do now is get Locke to wrap his fingers together and laugh manically, and it'll be a point well made.

[ONE WEEK BREAK] Episode re-run: 1.18 - "Numbers"[/b]

Episode 2.13: The Long Con : Episode Centric - Sawyer
Aired: 8th February 06
:4star:

Description: Survivors fear that "The Others" may have returned when Sun is badly injured during a failed kidnapping attempt. Sawyer tries to pitch the blame on the war-driven Ana-Lulu, and Kate rashly believes him. Big mistake freckles.

As the tension escalates, Jin shouts some random Korean at Sun, before deciding to take matters into his own hands; "Gun? Gun? Gun..? GUN..! GUUUUN!!" he yells at Jack, who noddingly agrees with Jin's crafty plan.

Flashbacks explore the con-man past of evil super-villain Sawyer, as he sells some necklaces to some randoms at a gas station for MORE THAN THERE FACE VALUE, and long-cons some idiotic woman, who he inevitabley pretends to fall in love with... Only to ACTUALLY fall in love with her. Clichéd, but good nonetheless.

A classic who dunnit, brought to you by ABC.

Guest stars in this episode play the characters Gordy, Diane, Cassidy, Arthur and Peter. Roles are played by Kevin Dunn, Beth Broderick, Kim Dickens, Finn Armstrong and Richard Cavanna.

Episode 2.14: One of Them : Episode Centric - Sayid
Aired: 15th February 06
:4star:

Description: When Danielle leads Sayid to a mysterious captive in the jungle, he becomes determined to find out if he is one of the “Others.”

Sawyer, meanwhile, discovers Hurley’s potentially devastating breech of the survivors’ trust (just how DO you still weigh 300lbs, Jabba?) and blackmails him into helping track down an elusive island creature that won’t leave Sawyer alone.

Flashbacks reveal how those EVIL Americans invaded iraq, and corrupted the heroic Sayid's mind by forcing him to torture one of his own allies. I mean, you'd never see such dirty antics from Saddam's legendary forces, would you?

Guest starring Lindsey Ginter as Sgt. Austen, Mira Furlan as Danielle Rousseau, Michael Emerson as Henry Gale, Marc Casabani as Tariq, Theo Rossi as Sgt. Buccelli, Clancy Brown as Joe Inman, and Thomas Meharey and Kamari Borden as the cunningly named U.S. soldier no. 1  and U.S. soldier no. 2.

Shockingly, it later turns out that sun might be pregnant to either some random Korean bloke (not jin, the other one), the island, or - more likely - vincent the dog.

In the hatch, Ana Lulu gets Henry G to draw an outline image of his balloon, so that she can colour it in later when she gets bored. He also draws a detailed map leading DIRECTLY to his balloon for her, and Ana ultimately trecks off with Shayid and Prince Charles on a nice sunny saturday adventure. SUMMARY OF THE LOST EXPERIENCE

HUGE Thanks to Carencey at thefuselage.com for presenting the following information.

The Hanso Foundation: Their mission statement says they stand “at the vanguard of social and scientific research for the advancement of the human race”. They have a spectacular website detailing all of their research and development projects worldwide, and they even run television ads promoting their motto of “reaching out for a better tomorrow”. The Foundation was established by noted philanthropist Alvar Hanso, and its executives dedicate the skills they bring from their life experiences to the betterment of mankind through the Foundation.

However, things which look “too good to be true” often are. There seems to be a whistleblower within the Hanso Foundation—a woman who calls herself “Persephone” has been hacking the Hanso Foundation website in order to share information on the real nature of their projects and board of directors, and may even be getting assistance from sympathetic employees of companies which do business with the Foundation.

Here’s what Persephone has told us so far regarding the executives of the Hanso Foundation:

Thomas Mittelwerk: The President and Chief Technologist is described on the Hanso Foundation website as Alvar Hanso’s right hand man. However, Persephone points out that he cannot have been recruited by Alvar Hanso at the age of eighteen while pursuing a molecular biology degree at Caltech, as the site says—Caltech’s records show that he never studied there.

Peter Thompson: The “successful corporate lawyer” joined the Hanso Foundation as Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary after being cured of cancer at one of their clinics. Persephone tells us that before coming to work for the Foundation, the seemingly pro-philanthropy Thompson actually made a career of defending tobacco, oil, and nuclear interests against patients and citizens. He also defended Lawrence Peck and Jacob Vanderfield, members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, against assorted charges and got very light sentences for both.

Hugh McIntyre: The Communications Director has a background as a UN translator and public relations expert. His bio on the website describes him as “deeply committed to family values”. However, Persephone has provided us with evidence that McIntyre was cheating on his wife of fifteen years with an unidentified woman. McIntyre appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show on May 24, stating that Persephone was “more mischievous than damaging” and that the picture on the website was actually his predecessor’s, accidentally posted by the webmaster. The picture then disappeared and was replaced by a question mark.

Alvar Hanso: The information Persephone has on the Foundation’s founder and guiding force is a bit different. She hasn’t accused Hanso himself of any nefarious activity; instead, Persephone notes that he hasn’t been seen in public since the end of 2002. Is Alvar Hanso really running the Hanso Foundation now, as the website suggests? Or is someone else in charge?

Persephone’s charges regarding the Foundation’s projects are even more damning.

Department of Heuristics and Research on Material Applications (DHARMA): We know very little about this department, but its name was given to us as part of a game presented in the MHA hack. There may be more information available on DHARMA in the future.

The Hanso Foundation seems notoriously uncomfortable with negative publicity—brief mentions of the Foundation in the novel “Bad Twin” were greeted with a flurry of ads in major newspapers, and revelations such as Persephone’s could provoke a more dangerous response.

Mathematical Forecasting Initiative: Despite the MFI’s stated goals of using mathematical models to predict the impact of pollution, population growth, and human disease, Persephone has presented us with a portion of a letter from Peter Thompson to “Minister of the Interior Mugato” regarding using findings from the Foundation’s population growth models to justify preemptive strikes on enemies—Thompson insisted on “plausible deniability”.

Worldwide Wellness and Prevention Development Program: On the Hanso Foundation’s website, the WWPDP is described as “a far-reaching educational initiative designed to teach the basics of sanitation, nutrition, and disease prevention to the world”. Persephone suggests that the free hospitals built by the Foundation have a darker purpose. A code hidden on a map of the foundation’s hospitals reads “MISSING ORGANS”. She later provided a South African newspaper account of a raid on a Hanso Foundation hospital that found patients kept in a comatose state with missing organs and bodies being kept just above freezing for organ harvesting purposes. Interestingly, the paper ran a retraction the next day regarding the involvement of the Foundation with the hospital…immediately after the paper’s purchase by the Foundation. The reporter also told Persephone of rumors that another reporter had died in a car accident immediately after penning a similar story.

Mental Health Appeal: The expressed goal of the MHA is “the complete eradication of all mental illness by the end of the century”, but according to Persephone, their methods are at best questionable. She has provided us with a letter from Dr. Armand Zander, director of the Vik Institute, the MHA’s flagship institution, to “Dr.” Thomas Mittelwerk, protesting activities conducted by doctors at the hospital acting outside of his authority.

Electromagnetic Research Initiative: The most basic of the Foundations’ research projects as well as the most vaguely described, the ERI seeks simply to understand electromagnetism. Persephone’s hack of this area includes another letter to Dr. Mittelwerk from a minister of the Korean government, warning that an offshore antenna project could be moved or destroyed due to negative effects on the surrounding area that include satellite and communications interference and mutations observed in nearby wildlife.

Institute for Genomic Advancement: Persephone has told us relatively little about this project, whose goal is described as the eradication of disease and birth defects through a deeper understanding of the function and mechanisms of the human genome. One hack, reached by an interesting password ‘parthenogenesis’ reveals a logo apparently tattoed on the skin of a dead shark, yet this update did not contain any of Persephone’s signature text and documentation.

Life Extension Project: The LEP, whose purpose is clearly stated in its name, boasts as its main achievement a 105-year-old orangutan named Joop. Persephone’s earliest site hack shared first a letter from a Global Welfare Consortium official, Jacques Maillot, to the CDC alleging a connection between the LEP’s research activities and a new meningococcal strain transmitted to humans in Africa, and a second letter from Peter Thompson effectively smoothing over the fuss—after he had taken over Maillot’s position at the GWC.

So who is Persephone? She has given us very little information on her own identity—one note on the WWPDP map states that she was an employee of the foundation. In addition, as part of that same update, a page was included in the microfilm section that read “Persephone if you can read this I know who you are”. We may not know who Persephone is, but evidently someone else does.

Another individual that may be a natural ally of Persephone’s is DJ Dan, a broadcaster and conspiracy hunter. Persephone used a name for Dan’s devoted listeners (“conspiraspies”) to unlock her latest update, which suggests some sort of connection between these two. In addition, one caller to a recent show of DJ Dan’s was “concerned” enough to issue threats if Dan didn’t stop his criticism of the Hanso Foundation.

Since Persephone has shared information on the true nature of the Hanso Foundation’s executives and nearly all of its projects, it is unclear what directions any future revelations of hers may take. Hanso watchers and conspiraspies should stay tuned.

Addendum June 16, 2006: Persephone had one more update today regarding the disappearance of Alvar Hanso. Hanso had apparently suffered some sort of medical crisis before vanishing, and afterwards, his office was slowly picked over in his absence. Just as Persephone was confessing that she believed Mittelwerk was responsible for the current direction of the Foundation, the transmission was abruptly cut off with the following message—“The Hanso Foundation site has been hacked by malicious infiltrators seeking to damage the good work of many dedicated researchers. Until a legal investigation is completed, the site will no longer be accessible to the public. Namaste.” It appears that Persephone will need to find a new outlet if she wishes to continue her efforts against the Hanso Foundation.

Is this another person in the hatch with Desmond; a woman, apparently, behind Locke's left-most shoulder?

What night is it shown in America and when does it become available to download?

It's aired at around 1 am UK time; so I'd guess it'll be available by 3/4ish...

Just watched the second episode; not quite as good as the first, but still good, and it raised yet more questions to be pondered:

1) Who is "him", that Desmond refers to?

2) Why is that hexagonal "Dharma" badge on EVERYTHING (including the shark; https://lost.cubit.net/pics/lostShark.jpg)

3) How did Jin get back to the Island so quickly?

4) Who were the "others" that were following Jin?

5) Why does Desmond have to continuously re-enter the code on his computer every x amount of minutes?

Frustrating that we didn't get to see more of Jack/Desmond at the end though, but I suppose that's for next week's episode.

I've a feeling that even midway through the 4th series we still won't have a clue what the hell's going on!

Aye. That's what's I like about it though; it creates LOADS of speculation and questions.

It's like a mystery program, where you don't even know what exactly the mystery is.

Something a bit odd about the whole 60's decor in Desmond's bunker. Lava lamp, American diner style table, music collection. I wonder if he's not the first person to have been down there?

That's what I was thinking; maybe Desmond has been assigned there to protect something (by entering the numbers), and "him" is the person who has to take over the job from Desmond after a certain period of time?

I noticed that Kate ate the chocolate bar after checking the expiry date on it's wrapper; so that alone suggests that either Desmond hasn't been down there for that long, or at least that he gets re-supplied every so often.

It was strange though, that he said "So.. There's still a world out there?!", when Locke was talking about the plane crash. Suggests he was maybe brought to the hatch initially under the belief that the world was about to end or something.

More than likely contains spoilers; so again, don't mention anything from within it if you watch it please.

I've just watched it (albeit with out-of-synch audio, which was quite annoying), thought it was an outstanding episode overall; arguably as good as the first of the season. Quite a few questions answered as well, which was a pleasant surprise.

I accidently caught the preview for next weeks show at the end as well, and all I can say is ""

Enjoyed the episode, but I must say, I got surprised when we saw the movie in the hatch. The city pictured there i just an hour drive away from here. I travel to the city a couple of times a year for football matches.  Up in Northern-Norway, who would have though? Now the Norwegian newspapers are running a story about it. It actually turns out, that the mystic person in the movie (described as Alvar Hanso) is being pointed out by persons in the building as the father of the coach for one of the best clubs in Norway (JA Riise's former club), which the coach doesn't deny after seing the footage. Clearly the same city.

Dunno if anyone's ever noticed this during episode 1; but you can clearly see some kind of black object, like the smoke seen during the later episodes when the 'monster' attacks, fly past the exploding engine and head upwards:

There's also another bit flies off to the right, if you look closely.

Another interesting thing is that the Dharma logo appears to be engraved on the side of the aircraft:

You can see it just to the right of the canopy on the above image, and to the far right of the picture, in line with Walt's waste, on the one below:

There's bigger versions of those images on the links below:

https://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=47&pos=552
https://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=47&pos=552

Could possibly suggest that Dharma brought the plane down deliberately, for whatever reason. Maybe to use the survivors as research subjects? (Which could also co-incide with the next image)

Another good one compares the two founding scientists in the Hanso Foundation video, to "the others" that were on the boat when Walt was kidnapped:

I think it's certainly plausible that they could be the same people (taking into account that they'd both be around 15/20 years older), which raises yet more questions about what's going on... My current theory is that "the others" are scientists (or ex-scientists) at Dharma, and they deliberately brought the plane down and kidnapped Walt so that they could experiment on him, since he seems to have some kind of "powers" (as we seen when he apparently made the bird crash into the window during his flashback)...

Well if that turns out to be the case whenever the show finaly finishes, I'll come back to this thread, consider that to be a spoiler, hack into your account, and ban your IP from within.

Just so you know like. Wink

At first I was thinking that someone had mocked up that smoke but I've just watched it again on DVD and well buggar me! It really is there!  bluebigeek.gif

Yep. It could just turn out to be naff special effects of course, but I seriously doubt it given that the rest of the CGI on the show is generally good.

Just watched episode 4 - one of the best episodes of Lost yet in my opinion; it had just the right amount of plot advancement AND some excellent character development, which we haven't had for a while. I thought Hurley's flashbacks were excellent (certainly the best this series), and the slower pacing of the episode made a nice change from the all-action stuff of late.

Some interesting questions raised too; especially about the other survivors, and why their numbers have been depleted. Also, what it is that's making them so paranoid that they've resorted to attacking anyone they see, and hiding themselves in another one of those hatch things so as not to be found. I presume that either "the others" or "the sickness" are responsible on both accounts, but I'd be surprised if the answer turns out to be that simple.

On a side note, I didn't particularly like Michelle Rodrigues' character in this episode, seems like just about every other character she's ever played; the stereotypical hard-ass beast-woman thing. Maybe she'll improve though...
