Allardyce Set to Become Newcastle Manager?
By James Collins On Mon 7 May 2007 |
Several news sources including the BBC are running the news story that former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has been appointed as Newcastle boss. It is currently unclear as to exactly when Allardyce will resume full duties, although Nigel Pearson was earlier announced as caretaker boss for the forthcoming game against Watford. Is this the right decision? Does this mean that you will now be renewing your season ticket? Have your say.

bring him in. we need somebody who can reshape the club from top to bottom. well organised a good motivator and who wants the job for the right reasons. go for it big sam

That is great.Alladyce is the right man for the job.You saw what happened last week’s defeat against Blackburn with Roeder in position. We need to close with a win.Next season,we must take a very good position in Premier league. We mustn’t take expensive players ,but we need to buy players who fit with the team’s chemistry.Well done freddy!
ROEDER GOODBYE AND I CERTANLY HOPE TO HAVE BAD DAYS!

while all the hype surrounds us as to who the new manager is going to be, i would like to change the subject a bit and ask people to show their respect for bobby robson a true newcastle great, i would like people to leave messages for him as once again he faces a fight against cancer.
bob hope you get well soon mate, the toon army is behind you all the way.

i think shearer could do well because what has changed since the end of last season when we had the 3rd best win record when roader joined? the only thing that has changed is that roader does not have shearer helping. people say that it is down to the injuries but we had the same amout of injuries last year. i say bring back shearer.

shepards problem is he wants success right this very minuite, and the likes of bobby robson and glen roedeer were trying to build a squad for years to come, like bobby had the likes of j.jenas, c.bellamy, d.ambrose, j.woodgate, james milner. and shepard is not a patient guy, the young lads roeder has brought through the likes of paul huntington, david edgar, steven taylor, andy carrol, he has brought milner on,
freddy if we are to achieve success in the long run you need to change your mindset pal. u r a crap chairman with no vision for our club, all of the top clubs in the prem league have excellent acadamie structures in place, but you wont keep managers long enuf to get one of our own in place pal. the demise of newcastle is down to YOU. not glen roeder or any of our past managers ( apart from souness ) but YOU.
your just a fat greedy bastard, fat greedy bastard.
time to sort yourself out pal before you ruin this great club.

sam allerdyce made bolton a force to be rekond with, with absolutley no money to spend. and look at the player he has brought in, ivan campo one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, kevin nolan a superb striker, kevin davies excellent lil player, el hadji diouf a dirty bastard but one hell of a player, nicolas anelka, jaskaleinin, jay jay okocha one of the best players this league has ever seen. and all of these players combined must have cost him mayb 8-10 milion. we payed more than that for albert luque for fuk sake need i say any more. allerdyce is the man to take us forward.
Sent in on: May 8th, 2007 at 11:50 am
It is only rumours and i am not getting carried away by them. Although i do believe that Allardyce is the man for NEwcastle and i would love to see it happen im jus not getting carried away by it

It seems that the geordies have mixed feelings for Big Sam.I respect him as a manager but i don’t think he’s the man to improve newcastle fortunes.Steady the ship yes but other than that…We need someone who can make the team play like in the good old days of Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby…and for that,we need managers like scholari, gus hinddik or even mourinho!
Sent in on: May 8th, 2007 at 2:35 am
all we need is an instant success right?
Big Sam will assure us that..
We don’t need a gr8 manager, we need someone who can be a motivator and able to turn the crap into a winner..

All I would like to say is: This next appointment is on your head Mr Shepherd.
You are the one that is hiring.
You are the one that is wasting the money having all these managers walking away on handouts. One every 2 years.
What’s your Finance Director doing - I would like to ask him to show the accounts on the players, that he agrees to buy and sell. Is there a plan? If you can’t bring people in for less than they go out you are not doing your Job, and you should be sacked, and the man not asking the questions - he should be sacked, that’s you Mr Shepherd.
You thought you could be smart by giving the job to Glenn, got him cheap. You could have still had him in charge of the academy, preparing for the future, turning the kids into profitable valuable players. Yet you wasted that opportunity, didn’t you Mr Shepherd.
Owen and the F.A. you should have said:
“If you want him then as soon as you have paid up for the time he was injured they can have him”.
You should have checked that the FA had the right Insurance cover. E.g. loss of position in league, loss of player while being paid, also loss if he could never play again.
Have you learnt anything? Are you doing this now with all the internationals/assets we have?
Smart things to do:
Make Sir Bobby a VIP of the Club and give him a seat in the Box. i.e. honour and respect our good guys.
There are some very good remarks being voiced by the Geordie Faithful, on who should the next manager be, and your own position.
Get a proven Manager. Check out the field and being fair add Sams name to the list. But there are a lot of very good managers who have proved themselves saying they would like the opportunity to manage in the prem. I would have Mark Hughes over Sam.
Get a manager who is using the latest methods and can manage the players lifestyles.
Start to put contracts in place were the employees of NUFC are paid on Performance and Success.
Relieve yourself of your office (by-the-way that doesn’t mean take a piss). You may not be big enough (in the intellect stakes) to run NUFC.

everyone talks about not wanting longballs/ boring football but I can’t remember seeing anything else since Sir Bobby…..(bless him)
Allardyce in!!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
As James Collins mentioned previously, the BBC story has been ‘downgraded’. Their obviously not as certain as first though. Let’s hope this true, I respect Allardyce’s achievements at Bolton, but at doubt their be any longevity in his appointment. He would certainly steady the ship and motivate the players but his overall knowledge of the game is limited, he want to be playing ggod football again!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Quote from Roeder - We’ve got one full-time scout.”
We do/did not have the time for Glen to make the changes. We would have been relegated this year were it not for Martins Goals, fact! Im not convinced with Allardyce, however one thing is certain he has a good scouting network worldwide look at the nationalties of the Bolton Squad. We need a complete clear out and Sam may have the players available at reasonable prices. Finally look at the Barclays Reserves Northern League Table, they are top with Man Utd second, which indicates a strong pool of back up players.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
I think the problem for a lot of fans lies in the fact that he was called in front of the Quest investigation for a third time recently and hasn’t sued the BBC yet. And crucially, we sacked Kevin Bond for the being named in that documentary and are being sued by him. The leverage he’d get from our then appointing Allardyce would be enormous.
Also, I’d be staggered if we could afford the pay-off to Bolton - which is estimated at two years of his contract!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
i think that big sam would do good for us if he gets to see us play in the last game of the season at Watford. He will see who needs to go and who needs to stay well i know wat ur thinkin its only one game and a player could underperform but still…. i could see a few players coming from bolton to us in the summer like tal ben haim because he is out of contract and we need a centre half to play with steven taylor.
He has done a good job with Bolton and i think with the squad we have we will be in the top 5/6 next season easy!!! unless we get those iinjuries again!!!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 9:01 pm
How come shearer refues to become our next manager. We know he likes being on the BBC and floating around Europe. Surely his love for our club and the fans would
persaude him to take on the job when we are in so much trouble? Even though he hasn,t got his pro licence yet.
His personality, reputaion and the respect he has among
his fellow profesionals hisleadership qualities, love for the toon and toon army would make him the best manager, the most qualifyed. Why look elsewhere?
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Big Sam or bust? He,s done a great job elsewhere with no money, now he,s coming to us with the same money available , nothing,, he,s got his work cut out, and i know, i ve been a season ticket holder for 20 years,, seen all the new and old crop of managers,, anyway,, good luck big sam,, your gonna need it.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Never seen such a ridiculous list of managers who we will never get in the current situation.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Well, if no Sam supporters are going to respond can I start:
“Sam Allardyce was appointed as Bolton Wanderers manager on his 45th birthday in October 1999, filling the vacant post left by Colin Todd.
Sam had resigned from Notts County to move to the Reebok Stadium having taken the club to the Third Division Championship in his first full season at Meadow Lane.
Sam’s professionalism and enthusiasm for the game were carried from his playing career which began at Bolton, taking in Sunderland, Millwall, Coventry, Huddersfield, Preston and West Brom, as well as a brief spell in Tampa Bay, America.
His previous managerial experience included spells as coach and assistant manager at Preston and Sunderland, and as a manager at leading Irish club, Limerick.
Sam returned from Ireland to become a highly successful manager at Blackpool, where he quickly established himself, taking the Tangerines from the foot of the Second Division table in 1994 to the play-off finals, only for them to lose to Bradford City in 1996. He left the club soon after.”
Stunning CV………….and there’s more
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Not my choice as he would only be an extension of current problems after the honeymoon is over.
Sam would improve things but really how far can he really take Newcastle.
The manager is not the only problem in the years that I’ve followed Newcastle (over 30 years), I believe the managers not the only problem, there’s something rotten with the club structure. Changing the manager hides the problem but really there need to be a vision of changing the environment to a global game. some of the structures at the club (and board members) aren’t geared for this and this is what will leave the club behind the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man utd, (and even Spurs) They’ve thought outside the square and appointed people in key positions to ensure they can have the best of english football and European Football.
I didn’t include Chelsea but they’ve resolved to join the elite by buying their way there, and you can see the downside of all of this - the internal bickering has started, last year they lost key players, this year there is underlying disharmony between management.
In some ways Newcastle can be accused of doing a similar thing on a poorer scale.
There needs to be a global director of football, and appointment of manager who understands the english game, but also has experience in the European game. His assistants need to be people who are likely to take over, so your not just having a clean out everytime a manager resigns. The cost is cheaper to replace a manager.
My pick would be Claudio Raneri,
Glen Roeder would still be a good coach at youth level, seeing some of the young players he’s brought through. he still has something to offer.
The next on my hit list would be the players, Newcastle have always paid over the top to get players, now they need to recruit with incentive based rewards rather than high basic salaries, players like Stephen Carr,Celestine Babayaro, Craig Moore are deadwood and players who were brought on the cheap but really have been injured too much to justfy the money being paid.
My Choice
Hitzfield Coaching Director
Raneri Manager
Shearer Assistant
Reoder Youth Director

not sure about big sam,, he,s done great job at bolton on little money, but now we have no money too, and a worse side, also not too keen on erickson but he is proven as a club manager,, we,ll see i guess.

Update: In the past hour or so, the BBC has downgraded the certainty of its initial claims. This has been seen in the past if any doubt over the validity of their report arises. Often however, this is just the BBC being very cautious, and as seen with the Obafemi Martins transfer last summer, these initial reports generally come to fruition.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
marcoose!! i think that all of your choices will land us futher up the creek than we already are. all of those managers will be demanding big money to spend, we will end up giving it and then they will fail and we will be totally knackered and end up like leeds. we have to be sensible.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
PLEASE NO NO NO TO FAT SAM!
MUST BE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: VAN GAAL, SCOLARI, HIDDINK, HITZFELD, ERIKSSON, MOURINHO, CAPPELLO.
NOT I REPEAT NOT FAT SAM!!!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:04 pm
First things first and that is we need a new board or we will be going through all this again in another 18 months.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Nothing definate on the BBC Website as far as I can see!
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
i hope we do get sam as the next manager. i think he is a motivator and always gets the best out of his troops. he also does not seem to waste too much money either which is a good thing for us at the minute saying as we just do not have the resources to take on clubs that are owned by big consortiums.
i also do not think that this is a rush appointment either as if the truth be said, we tried to get him before we (sadly) put souness in charge.
i dont think newcastle are broke either, i think far from it. we are 80 million in debt but we have spent that much on crap players since souness started. all we need to do is sniff out the better/raw talent at realistic prices, if we do that (and sam does) we will be looking very healthy again within two or three seasons.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Juanan Ramos would be my choice, took Sevilla to the champions league, so top 4 last season and now this one by the looks of things. He won the UEFA last year with them, and has got them to the final this year. He says he wants to move to the Premiership to properly prove himself, sounds ideal. Oh well I guess we will get to see the ‘talent’ and ‘youthful’ players like Diouf, Davies, Stelios, and Campo coming in this summer, yay. Only players worth havin from Bolton and could help us = Nolan, Ben Haim.

Can someone list the glorious managerial achievements of Gross Sam? Shoudn’t take long……
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
Three points.
1 Last summer it seemed the right thing to do to appoint Glen Roeder. Shepherd seemde to have behaved honourably to the guy who brought a revival after Souness left. Most people I know tohught that. Sadly it did not work out.
2 We, the fans, wont have any say. The appointment of SA will not be the worst thing that could happen. He has done a very good job indeed at Bolton. Results ARE important!
3. I dont hold much brief for Shephard BUT given we are going to have a rich b*s***d in charge what ever happens it has to be said that he has given ALL his managers loot to shape their teams. If they (managers & players) don’t perform it is hardly Freddie’s fault! Don’t forget it was amazing to get Michael Owen, just awful to see him crippled.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:47 pm
I’m pleased. He achieved incredible success at Bolton with little money and no big buys (Anelka apart). He took Gary Speed when he was finished at Newcastle and got extra years out of him. Remember Brian Clough getting several years (and a European Cup win) out of Frank Clarke when he was finished at Newcastle. I’m not saying Allardyce is another Brian Clough but he appears to be able to spot players who add value to the team. I’m sure he wouldn’t have signed Luque or Boumsong and I’m sure he would have got more out of Duff, Parker, Dyer and the other underachievers.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
I am a little disappointed that we are going for someone like Sam, who specialises in the longball game. For years we have prided ourselves in playing attactive football that is the envy of the premier league and I fail to see how Allardyce has the coaching experience to perform at this level.
It all seems a tad ruched to be honest, especially as there maybe a certain fella called Jose looking for a job in a few weeks time.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:42 pm
why was roeder sacked? he was doing a cracking job all things considered. not too sure about sam allardyce myself, he plays the long ball game and i feel the geordie nation deserve better. Someone like glenn hoddle who plays attractive football would get my vote
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Allardyce, oh please no! Surely we can do better than him. The bloke represents everything we hate in football. It would be SOUNESS all over again. There is a TV program, which gave Bond the Sack from Newcastle & which gave Allardyce 90% coverage as a dodgy manager.
We mustn’t give Big Sam the job.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
I think he’s the man for the job and unfortunately trademark Newcastle United fans seems to be the reaction i’m getting.
Things like “we can do better” no we cant, get your head out your arse, Souness and Roeder got the job because we cant do better!
“his ugly football” it kept Bolton in the league and over the last 3 years i think they’ve played some good stuff at times, they did up here going forward this season
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
If it is true i am absolutely delighted. At last we have a manager with a pedigree and one which all the top clubs would be looking at if they had vacancies (not saying he would get them but would definately be shortlisted).
He is an innovator, motivator and very meticulous organiser. I have no doubt he will turn us into a minimum top 6 club and possibly further.
Those people who don’t want him need to wake up and smell the coffee. He is by far and away the best manager we could hope for in our current predicament.
Howay Big Sam you have my full backing
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
I refuse to believe this until theres an official response. In all honesty we can do a lot better. It seems rushed, we could have interviewed many candidates. I don’t like this.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
i would’ve chosen Scolari if i was freddy. he wants out of lisbon
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Not sure how I feel about this. I have loathed him as manager of Bolton and I am slightly concerned by Gartside now laying most of Bolton’s success at the door of Sammy Lee.
Another issue is that we are broke. We may have come to some sort of arrangement with the creditors, but, on paper, we haven’t a pot to pee in, so it’ll be interesting to see how much money we can give him.
Sent in on: May 7th, 2007 at 7:22 pm
lets all give him our backing and give him 3 years to sought us out, and plenty of money to shape his own squad
