Taking the Michael.
By Kitman On Sat 13 Oct 2007 |
This player fancies himself as an international. He’s only with the toon for the money, in fact he’s a mercenary little b******. He rarely plays for us, he’s usually got some injury or other. He has no loyalty to the club, he’s more interested in swanning around with his international mates than playing for us. Since we signed him he’s done nowt for us, absolutely nowt. It cost us millions to sign him, millions to pay him and for what? An injury list as long as your arm, no longer the player he was, in fact he might be finished with his record. The best thing we could do is sell him now, to the highest bidder, and get him off the payroll.
So did you get it? Did you say Kieron Dyer? Well he fits the profile but he’s long gone thankfully. How about Damien Duff? Nope, no-one seems to think he’s a waster despite his poor injury record. Celestine Babayaro? He fits the profile too but we can rule him out because he NEVER plays for us and isn’t therefore technically a player. Yes, step forward Michael Owen! Isn’t he the biggest mercenary waste of space we’ve ever signed? To think he’s keeping Oba Martins out of the team! Wouldn’t you be delighted if we just hoyed him out of the club?
Well actually, I wouldn’t be delighted at all. However some fans seem to think that because he’s been injured on international duty, gets paid a lot and wants to play for his country, he’s a liability to the toon and we should get rid. It seems he was even booed onto the pitch against Everton. Now either I’ve got the wrong end of the stick or there are some people who think that Michael Owen’s not worthy of a toon shirt.
I just don’t get it myself. It’s hardly his fault he got injured at the last world cup; even if he wasn’t fit, you can’t fault a player for wanting to play. He hardly said “I’ll show those Geordie bastards by getting myself crocked for the best part of a season, ha ha!” If anyone’s to blame, it’s Svennis and his half arsed bunch of quacks who in their desperation to progress let a player on the pitch who was still in rehab. Any player worth his salt wants to play - it’s up to the manager to rein him back when it’s not in his best interest. Eriksson let us down badly their in my opinion, but that’s no surprise.
It’s also hardly his fault he’s paid a lot of dosh - step forward and take a bow Mr Shepherd, who in his desperation to sign Owen offered him more cash than he could possibly stuff in his trousers even if they were the size of Wales. Fair play to Owen I say, I’d do the same in his position, and fair play to Freddie for getting him in against all the odds. Either we can afford the cash to pay him or we can’t. Give him Ameobi’s wages too while you’re at it.
And why the hell shouldn’t he play for England if he wants to? Does anyone seriously think he views playing for the toon as the pinnacle of his career and the fulfilment of his talent? Was there some kind of gentleman’s agreement that he wouldn’t play for England when he signed for us, that the little git’s reneging on now? Or perhaps he has some kind of secret Geordie lineage that I’m unaware of that’s turned him into some kind of blood traitor in people’s eyes when he turns out for England?
Either he’s fit to play for England or not - and as I’ve said already, if he’s not fit then the England manager shouldn’t play him for a single minute. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting to turn out for your country. Yes, he might crock himself again - let’s face it the odds are on him to do it over two games - but he’s no different from all the other toon players who go away on international duty (and even bloody Carr would do it if he could lever his bloated frame off the treatment table to turn out for Ireland) who we hope and pray return to us from the wars safe and sound.
Ladies and gentlemen, here we have one of the greatest goalscorers of his generation, one of the few players in our current squad you could describe as world class. A player who can turn a match on its head for us because he can score goals from any position and from meagre pickings. Not some bloody acrobat who is more likely to screw the ball wide and needs ten chances to score. Not some fat b****** with the mobility of a bus who may be arsed to turn up and play if you’re lucky. Not some gangly joker with the first touch of a rapist who belongs in Division 2 or whatever they call it these days. No, here we have a true professional and a legend in the making who plays for us. And some people want to boo him on and off the pitch - to me it beggars belief.
The truth is, these days many players are mercenary and self- serving with no respect for the clubs they play for. In the case of Owen, we have someone who’s proven, supremely gifted and totally professional. That’s about as good as it gets really these days. I wonder whether some of this situation lies in the influence of the papers - let’s face it they’ve had it in for us since before the days of Shepherd and Halls’ brothel creeping escapades - and they’re stirring it up again with this Owen v Allardyce nonsense, and inventing a conflict where none exists. Plainly Owen doesn’t help himself with his lukewarm announcements and lack of rebuttals. Certainly he could give his ego a rest and make an effort to generate some positive PR; but anybody who believes the papers is a sucker.
I’d suggest that if you’re lucky enough to have a truly world class striker who plays for your club, especially when it’s not in Champion’s League and hasn’t won a pot to piss in for 38 years, the best way to treat him is forget the shit the papers sling, cherish the little greedy b****** and pray to God he sees out his contract and signs another one. Because one day in the last 5 minutes of a match that matters he might be the difference between a shiny pot and just another year.

I can’t see what Owen has done wrong? He is injury prone alright, but what else? he cannot get involved in media speculation every five minutes, as that would restrict him from training and acting like an athlete, and I think that Kluivert, Ginola, and most other players have been more selectve in their services to us than Michael Owen…

Would you all stop moaning like a bnunch of c***s, at the end of the day everyone knows Owen is an England player first then club second, we knew this when we bought him. At the time no one mentioned this because he has a proven scoring record for all the clubs he’s been with. Just look at Liverpool where although he scored only two short of Fowler in his career there he’ll never be held in near the same regard, why? Because Fowler was all about club before country, but ask any Liverpool fan would they rather Owen was not at their club scoring those goals and they’ll tell you the same as anyone of us, No f***ing way!!!

“Yes, step forward Michael Owen! Isn’t he the biggest mercenary waste of space we’ve ever signed?”
The only part of this article I agreed with.
I am a Geordie first and In-ger-land mean next to nothing to me.
And compared to Newcastle United In-ger-land mean nothing at all.
Owen has been as big as waste of space as far as the Toon go as Marcellino or Dyer.
Owen doesn’t give a flying fart about Newcastle and I don’t give a flying fart about him.

Spot on. Paper talk is often used to prise players alway from ‘Smaller’ clubs. Especially by a certain Manchester based Tabliod…cough cough Daily Mirror cough!
Nuff said…article states everything I’ve been thinking since we bought him from under the nose of Liverpool.
Yes he plays for England (who wouldnt as a pro footballer?)
Yes we pay a shedload of money for him (do the likes of Lampard/Terry/Gerrard not get far too much?).
Yes he gets injured a fair amount (as do most footballers…personally I think we need to go back to a pie and a pint for the players after every game…or at least let them get lashed after a match!! )
But at the end of the day, he scores goals for a potentially top six side this season, and if it means we qualify for Europe at the end of this season and/or actually win something in the next two years (we can dream cant we?)…then I dont give a flying rats arse if he’s only here for the money.
P.S
I bet you the makums wish they had a mercenary like Michael Owen, rather than shite like Dwight York. C*nt!

I was having a conversation about owen with a mackem the during the england game. what he said to finish was “AT LEAST YOU HAVE OWEN, I don’t know what you’re complaining about”. exact we have owen and when he’s fit he will score us goals (probably some important ones).

He didn’t get booed on, the booing seemed more towards who he came on for when Geremi and Smith looked ripe for being removed from the team. Instead as usual it was Martins who came off. Strange how he can play with 2 small guys upfront for England but not Newcastle ?

Agreed, he is the best finisher at the club. And he can’t help being selected for his country, and i’m sure he’d want to be - honestly now that weve been punted from the league cup, England & euro 2008 would be his best shot at his next “pot to piss in”.
Go easy on the other forwards as well, i guess you were making those comments to help your story, but viduka and martins have their place. ameobi should go get some rope.

great article, so our own prawn sandwich brigade are raising their ”come lately”heads by booing owen, injurys are part of football as is playing for your country, as for getting rid, well you don’t miss something till its gone, and we will miss owen (shearer nearly 2 seasons)is the answer martins, ameobi,or a fat mercenary INJURY prone smoggie badge kisser !!!! as long as owen wears the shirt cheer&support him, as we did with shinton, reilly, mcdonald (rob), & and all the other dross who have had the temerity to play in our beloved b/w shirts and call themselves players.
please do not use the words relating to serious crime i.e. r****t when making comparisons, it is only a game,

Could not agree more. This is what I’ve been trying to say on the forums. I would love to know what Owen has done to P*** off so many fans and why he has to pledge his allegiance every five minutes so as not to be branded a mercenary, Jesus even Dyer got better treatment than Owen.

Absolutely spot on.
Thankyou for writing in words exactly how i feel about the issue…some newcastle fans need to appreciate what we have in owen, or quite simply p*ss off.
Michael Owen = England Legend playing for Newcastle United
that should make all of us proud.

The terrible reality fans,

So is it good form for him to sarcastically celebrate his goal against Everton as he did, cupping his ear to the crowd because a MINORITY of fans MAY HAVE been booing him?
He clearly wants out, much as some may be blindly trying to see it a different way, I’d bet Allardyce wants him out too. Just get rid of him and move on.
He’ll never play every week anyway, he’s made of glass so he’ll have niggly injuries here and there all the time.
No doubting he’s a very good player when fit, the best at our club. But he’s hardly ever fit and it seems we have to change the shape of the team we play when he is to accomodate him, so we’ll never get settled into a system with that being the case.
There’s no chance of him signing a new contract here if he’s somehow still fit and playing well and scoring in two years either, much as you may want to try and depict him as some sort of angel who’s just the victim of bad PR. He’s not the anti-christ some depict him to be, but he’s a sneaky little cunt all the same.
May as well get something now, sell in January if anyone will take him off our hands.

Good article and one where I am in agreement.I am a big fan of Michael Owen and when it matters he delivers.I also understand the scepticism of the fans but the blame must fall at the feet of previous managers wasting the clubs money on true mercenaries of which there is an endless list and a chairman desperate and at times naive when making deadline day signings at whatever cost to the club and the fans.
What I will say is I am inpressed with the signings Sam Alardyce has made and how shrewd he has been in bringing them in.They all seem to have a mentality to go out and give everything for the club which is a minimum requirement for anyone pulling on the shirt.
Finally Owen is ours and at the end of the season when he has banged in 20 goals and we are in Europe again the knives will be put away.
The southern press hate us and Allardyce so I say “F!!K em.We are what we are and that is a proud Geordie nation who love their team through thick and thin and our day will come…

thought this article was having a go till i kept reading, little micky cannot do right for wrong at the minute and imho we should stop getting sucked into this anti owen thing that seems to be growing .he was not that popular at liverpool for some of the same reasons as here by all accounts and it just goes with the territory i guess ,He has been guilty of some bad p.r i think cos everything he says gets twisted but he should be a bit more in club mode than england though he is only answering questions put to him but we want to feel he is a toon player first.
