Match Review: Newcastle United 4-1 Celtic
By Matt Raisbeck On Fri 27 Jul 2007 |
Two first half goals from forgotten man Albert Luque helped Newcastle United to victory over Scottish Champions Celtic in Sam Allardyce’s first home match in charge of the club.
Despite being without players such as Michael Owen, Joey Barton and, perhaps tellingly, Kieron Dyer, an efficient first half performance saw the Magpies lead 3-0 at the interval, with Sam Allardyce’s men looking particularly threatening in attack.
Both sides pressed forward in the second half but clearcut chances were few and far between until Scott Brown headed a goal back for the visitors with 20 minutes left, however the returning James Milner capped off a great win for United with a late strike.
New recruit David Rozehnal looked solid and composed until he was subsituted late on and fellow new boy Geremi put in a man of the match performance, pulling the strings in an unfamiliar central midfield role.
Sporting their brand-new blue change kit, United took the lead in the eleventh minute when Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins drove a low shot into the bottom right corner from 12 yards, after Nobby Solano’s intelligent pull back.
Celtic came close to an equaliser shortly after with Paul Hartley setting up striker Maciej Zurawski, but the Pole could only guide his shot wide when perhaps he should have done better.
This spurred the home side into action - Geremi twice coming close with right-footed efforts and Albert Luque lashing a free-kick over the bar from a promising position.
However, Luque wasn’t to be denied for long as the former Deportivo man got his first of the night nine minutes later, staying just onside to guide James Milners inswinging cross underneath Celtic keeper Boruc.
Luque almost added a another shortly after, his powerful left foot volley just clearing Boruc’s goal after being sent through by the impressive Geremi.
Celtic should have halved the deficit in the 40th minute when Zurawski took the ball past an advancing Shay Given and left it for Vennegor of Hesselink to finish off but Peter Ramage recovered brilliantly to clear off the line.
Newcastle’s third goal arrived three minutes before half time with Nobby Solano again the provider. The Peruvian looped in a trademark cross from the right and Albert Luque arrived late at the back post to volley in his second and Newcastle’s third on the night.
Early in the second half United’s Andy Carroll, on for Luque at the break, almost made it four after pouncing on Lee Naylor’s weak backpass but the Toon youngster could only poke the ball into the body of the onrushing keeper.
The lively James Milner then came close with a great turn and shot that bounced just wide of new Celtic keeper Brown’s right-hand post.
Celtic threatened more after the break and the visiting fans were given cause for celebration in the 72nd minute as summer signing Scott Brown pulled one back for the Bhoys, looping a header over Shay Given from Aiden McGeadys clever chip.
Brown almost added a second shortly after but saw his drilled shot hit the foot of Shay Given and loop over the crossbar.
Newcastle substitute keeper Steve Harper made a late cameo appearance outfield, replacing the injured Nicky Butt to great applause from the home crowd.
Despite many fans heading towards the exits early, there was still some action left as United restored their three-goal advantage in the final minute. Charles N’Zogbia found James Milner, and the England Under 21 star cut in from the left, drilling a right foot shot into the bottom corner with the last kick of the game.

I’ve only been to 4 away games and the noise by us Newcastle fans was absolutely incredible- we were even singing “easy easy” to Fulham when we were 2 nil down and Martins equalised in the 93rd minute!! But on the game, was Babayaro left out for injury reasons or because of the fact that he is absolute shite?

i totaly agree stu, but alot of toon fans would disagree with fact SJP is extremly quiet these days, which is shame coz were certinly not loudest ground anymore no matter what sky tells you.
Good result against Celtic, confidence booster but i would be expecting to beat them, to finish within at least top 8 of league.

I am unbiased being a newcastle and celtic fan. I was up in the celtic end and noise was amazing. Shame toon fans are not the same. Albeit a friendly the bhoys were singing even at 3-0. As for the game celtic were dire and even still managed to score. Full backs needed now for newcastle. Celtic got hammered in pre-season last season and won the league and cup easily also got in the last 16 of the champions league. So they are not a mickey mouse team by anyone’s standards. So let’s get a few lads in defence and start getting some noise back into SJP because it was like a church amongst toon fans!!!!

Good report.
Don’t understand the comment about Geremi doing well in an unfamiliar role given that he is a central midfielder!
Thought the marks were generally fair although I thought Steven Carr had as good a game as anyone with the exception of the guys you gave 8 to all of which I agree with.
Can’t understand some of the comments about the defence. Given that we played with at least 8 different players there in the 90 minutes, some of whom were playing alongside each other for the first time and some of them playing out of their usual position (Huntington and Zog), I think they did exceptionally well for what was only the 2nd friendly of the pre-season. Yes they were breached a couple of times but each times were recovered by some good tackles.

I see Anal Oliver is up to it again in todays Ronnie Gill he expects three more players to be here this time next week or will this be wide of the mark.
On last nights evidence we need another 6 at least to add depth…….please no more matty pattinson.

Thought Geremi looked a class act in midfield and provided something different to the constant spins and turns of Scott Parker. High hopes for him this season. Rozenhal also looked quality - tall, composed, read the game well, and the defence fell apart when he went off. Really impressed.
Carr still crap, Nobby had a good game, good to see Luque score and hopefully boost his confidence…there’s a £9.5m player in there somewhere. Pattison not good enough.
Major thing I took from the game though was the unbelievable lack of strength in depth in the whole squad, but especially defence. We could also do with another central midfielder to cover our injuries and the fact that the King Of Bling is seemingly heading off. Not that I’ll mourn his departure though!

What tonight has proved is that we are desperately short on numbers. Harper coming on up front is funny but also a shining example of what needs to be done.
Hopefully Ashley et al will see this and take appropriate action asap.

Comprehensive report but some very generous ratings in some places!
Really pleased with how we played tonight, especially going forward. Geremi looks like a playmaker.
We were clumsy and uncalculated at the back though. We lost all calm and collection altogether when Rozehnal departed; but even before then, the positional sense from the defense was practically non-existant.

This is a good start, but a team with aims for Europe should be beating SPL teams by this score. Celtic are good, but not that good.
Can’t complain, but a clean sheet would be nice next time.
