Poll: Who Would You Rather Keep?
By Bluf Purdi On Fri 29 Jun 2007 |
As you can probably see, we have a new poll. With much of the speculation recently regarding the futures of Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen we thought we would ask you for your views on the situation.
Who do you want to stay? Who offers more to the team? Who has a brighter future, or whose heart is in it? Would you rather we flogged the both of them and brought in new players with our new found wealth? Would the possible signing of Eidur Gudjohnson push you towards keeping one over the other?
Let us know your views, and vote while you’re at it.

Keep both. We need to look at the squad as a whole and consider who is capable of taking us forward. Both players are in this bracket. I’m a bit upset that Owen hasn’t pledged his future to us, but if you weren’t a Geordie i think you’d probably keep your options open too considering the plight of the club not so long ago. We’ve had years of falling short as well as the fear/reality of becoming aston villa in black and white. Newcastle United needs to be ruthless in it’s pursuit of glory. All signs are good so far with the Ashley/Allerdice era well under way. Let’s have (more) patience and see what they can do. I for 1 just want to see a proper football team free of prima dona’s and piss takers playing with passion and respect for the badge. Hopefully Sam can instill this in ALL of our players. C’mon the toon.

if we can find suitable replacements or one decent one ie gudjohnsen id dump both of them in an instant owen has completly lost my respect and oba can trap a ball father than i can kick one(makes sholas touch look first class] has a great shot and great speed but as well as his bad first touch quite often looks clueless and hasnt got a footballing brain- just my thoughts, but im more confidant than ive been in a long while that we look like well move foreward, heres hoping,C-U-M-O-N! onward and upward

I think we really need to keep both. They’re both amazing players in their own rights. Some of Oba’s goals last season was the stuff of dreams, like the one against Tottenham. Owen as we all know, is a poacher and a damn good one at that. I think for me, if we’re getting rid of strikers to make way for Gudjohnsen, sorry but it has to be Shola Ameobi. He’s been a great servant to the Toon for many a year, but if we really are moving up a gear in the ‘buying and selling’ stakes, then we have to let him go. He’s a very good player and a Geordie to boot, but really good enough for Sam’s and the fan’s ambitions? I’m not so sure.

I don’t think that any of the top teams will make an approach for Owen at least not this season. He needs to prove himself all over again. And you have to admit his England performances were not that great. If a team did put an offer in for him I would get shot of him immediately and loose no sleep over it. However I would get down on my knees and plead with Oba to stay. He is young with great talent just needs a bit of the rough edges taken off. We need this type of player. We do not need Own and never did

we need to keep both i wud offer them both new contracts without any shitty clauses. martins in my opinion did excellent last season he scored 17 goals in a really poor team not bad if u ask me. owen is also a world class striker the only thing he has done rong is not come out and commit his future to the club. he cant help the injuries can he. give him a chance and he wil score goals as he is the best english finisher around at the moment. BS has done good so far in the transfer window and if either of these leave im sure he wil gt sumone who can do just as good a job.
CMON THE LADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doea anyone get the feeling from the inqueries that Sam has been making that he’s already preparing the ground for when Martins and Owen leave? He’s brought in Viduka, he’s rumoured to have a £6 million bid ready for Gudjonsson and he still has Ameobi, Luque and Carrol on the books. If he does land Gudjonsson then there’ll be 7 strikers! And there’s no European games this year so when are they all going to get their turn?
On the other hand, maybe he’s getting ready to get shot of other guys instead (Luque, Ameobi?).
Ah, the speculation of the transfer window…

They are very different strikers. I think Owen will score more if he stays fit, whilst Martins is an unpredictable livewire. He’s still a rough diamond, great to have in your team because he do something special in a moment, but I think his control can be very sloppy and is not good at holding up play.
It’s catch 22 in that we need a very good season to both attract great strikers and to keep what we have, but we need our best squad to HAVE that very good season. I hope that we keep them both Martins and Owen for at least another year, even adding Gudjohnsen. Carroll might have to be patient a while longer, but we’d have a strong choice of strikers and could cope well with injuries for once.

I would keep oba Martins. He a solid player, faster, stronger, and younger. I would have no problem leting owen go and to replace owen DAVID VILLA!!!

Martins - A clause contracted player who doesnt really want to play for this club but in a country where he has something to prove.
Owen - A clause contracted player who doesnt really want to play for this club in a country where he has nothing to prove.
Help!!!!!
Maybe its a case of who has the most human decency and honour. We’ll see.
Unlike Big brother, the choice is not ours. That doesn’t mean we dont have a right to feel shitted off at being purely an acceptable club and wage that agrees with their own ambition. My heart say neither, my head says both.

Michael only came to the toon to get out of hell (Madrid)we the toon is just a life raft for him to get back in the prem to show has skills & hope one of the big 4 come calling but his knee slow down his plans sell him now keep Martins he is great and could only get better. So owen out oba stay and maybe someone like a Benny Mccarthy to replace him we don’t have any football in UEFA cup or champions league so people relax with the Torres & Ibrahimavic talk just won’t happen.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
I think we should sell martins and owen, because i believe they won’t be much use next term. owen is likely to get injured and martins doesn’t look to fulfill his potential, at leat not here in england. I’d rather buy gudjohnson from barca as he is a quality player, who can play in england. Also we should tempt someone like Carlos Tevez with a mega bucks offer. You never know, he could come.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
I think we should get rid of both as neither has any real desire to stay at toon. Oba had a hissy fit because he wasn’t playing against Watford and has said on numerous occasions that he would prefer to go back to Italy. If Juventus made a bid for him he would be gone in a flash. As for Owen, I think it is obvious where his priorities lie and they’re not at toon.
As for replacements, I think we will struggle to attract the right kind of quality to make up for losing these two. I’m not convinced by Viduka, he has a tendency to go missing for large parts of games and also to “be injured” if he doesn’t fancy playing in a particular game. We don’t need players with that level of commitment at toon. Hopefully SA will knock that kind of behaviour on the head before it starts. I think at this stage in the re-building process, any striker with a decent strike rate would be worth a punt in the short term and then perhaps we could reassess the situation next season after we (hopefully) qualify for europe. Whatever happens SA will need to use all of his nous in the transfer market to sort out this mess.

I would keep Martins because he is only 22 and has shown that he can become a great player. If Big Sam improves his first touch and hold up play, we have a great young player on our hands. Owen, on the other hand, has lost all his pace, dosen’t look the same player and would not fit into the 4-3-3 system. I do not want to see us changing our system for him and if we sell him for £10m, we have really not lost anything with the compensation money
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Rebel Yell: We wanted to see who people prefered, I know ‘Sell Both’ doesn’t really stick to that but it’s quite a serious possibility that both could end out leaving.
I think it’s taken for granted that most of us would prefer to have BOTH stay.
I know I most definitely would. At the end of the day, we have no say in the matter so going for a more decisive was the route we took.
On the actual question, I’d much rather keep Martins if it boiled down to it. He has a bright future, I don’t think he’s as golden as some have made out over the past season, but never the less I think he will take the Premiership by storm in the years to come, whether it’s with us or someone else.

Why isn’t keeping both an option? Give Oba some time to work on some of his skills (he’s got promise) and keep Owen for the one year or so he’d stay at NUFC at any rate and sell him next year after hopefully qualifuying for Europe and negating this stupid clause that keeps the price low.
I remember the last time Owen touched a ball in a Newcastle shirt…he got concussed by his own teammate. I bet that makes him very fond of the world-class squad Newcastle boasts. Big Sam has a lot of work ahead of him, but I think he can do it. He’s got a good history with mediocre squads.
I think it’d be a mistake to sell Owen. Especially since he seems to love scoring against Newcastle (how many hattricks has he had v. the Magpies?). If he’s on form he’ll be an amazing asset. He’s managed a more than decent 1 goal every two matches thus far. If he comes back on that song, I think Newcastle will be very happy to have kept him.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Martins all the way…especially if Eidur arrives.
I think the two would compliment each other superbly, and Gudjohnsen is a good leader, he could help Martins smooth out some of his rough edges.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
Nobody will come in for Owen, and come the end of the transfer window he will say “What was all the fuss about, I’m a Newcastle player” he will not say this until the window is closed.
Big Sam needs to close the clauses NOW. If I had the choice I would keep Owen as there aren’t many out and out goalscorers.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
I cant believe some of the names being banded around, Torres,Ibrahimavic etc, we are not even in the UEFA cup let alone the champions league. We need to be realistic in our expectations on incoming players plus dont forget BS had Bolton in and around top four most of last season without any so called superstars. I would love us to finish in the top four then flog Owen, see how the ungreatful little shit likes that!!
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Ashley should sack the idiot that put these clauses in the players contracts, it will seriously deter our start to the premiership, right up until september we will hear nothing but Owen leaving martins leaving, it will seriously harm our start to the season the stupiod bastards who put that in ther contracts should be shot dead twice.
In my opinion this has the potential to totaly ruin our season, and i think as soon as the players return for pre-season training we should defintly either buy to replace both of them with a good proven goalscorer or get them to sign new and different contract.
if at ;east one of them doesnt accept the new contract change we should sell one of them,
[ not for that shit offer of 4m plus alan smith ]
but perhaps martins 13 million, id like to see someone like torres be signed i think he would come if we could convince him that we will be back in champions league very soon.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Owen’s heart isn’t in it. He obviously wants to thank us for rebuilding his knee by doing one.
His behavious towards Newcastle over the 2 years shows the qualities of a poor human being indeed.
Who gives a c**p as long as your fit for England, eh Michael? What about the Geordies (like me) who’ve been duped into replica shirts with his name on (not stupid enough to get this seasons though).
Hes a quality striker, but lets get rid asap. Not commited and always injured.
As for Martins. Offer him a new contract with no clause and if he doesn’t sign give Mr Wenger a ring.
Replacements? Now we have the cash, Defoe (£8M?) and Berbatov (£25M?) please. Both amazing players. Or Ibrahimovic - even better. But can we get these players with no European football???
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
oba. definitely. same reasons as above really but also just to add a different slnt to it. big sam will possibly be bringing his 4-3-3 system in next season. if we can get a creative forward (eg gudjohnsen) and play them just behind martins and viduka, or hell, even martins just off viduka and ameobi, i dont think there will be anyone missing owen.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 11:07 am
OBA all the way Owen is only interested in his own ambitions and has shown no loyalyty to any club even liverpool where he came through the ranks he would alwasy talk more about england than them . Hes on double the money oba is and will never play half the games … hes a reat finisher but you cant rely on his fitness anymore and he clearly isnt bothered about the club at all otherwise he would have said something by now . Oba has more pace , more potential and can create more than owen he may not get quite as many goals but he will be more of a team player which ios what we need !
On yer bike owen go get paid for playin golf elsewhere !
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 10:06 am
I would sit them both down with new contract offers with no get out clause and say sign or go. I believe Oba would and Owen wouldnt, He has never come out to say he wants to stay, Oba has. If no one comes in for Owen let him warm the bench, loose his England place and end up at Aston Villa or some other mediocre club. Lets sign two more strikers and create a REAL competition for places. In short Oba stays Owen goes. Rant over
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 9:25 am
based solely on comments made by the player,
Oba has to stay
he says he wants to stay,
whereas Owen hasn’t even talked to anyone,
and its farily obvious he isn’t happy
plus, if he gets injured again…
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 8:11 am
Oba Martins, for a first season he scored some cracking goals, Big Sam can only make him better. Owen will never play 100% for Newcastle, and he is past his prime due to injury. Also think about Wenger good manager who is his first pick “Oba”.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 8:04 am
Totally agree with all of the above. Keep Oba. I’d like to keep Owen but thats still merely because of hope. Lets see how it goes at the start of the season but lets not lose Oba because we treid to owen . If he had any love for the team he’d show it. Oba might be a bit unreliable at times attitude wise but he is a young guy and Sam can work with him.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 7:48 am
i would say it’s Martins. Owen is determined to leave anyways. It’s just either this season or the next. So we should try harder to keep Martins instead. He has the future and potential. Besides, he’s only 22! Another reason would be their wages difference. Martins ’s is 60k pw while owen’s 110k pw is not value for money, considering an apperance of only 12 times.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 6:51 am
Keep Martins if possible. Keep Owen, but only if he commits to full Season. I wouldnt be sad to see Owen go, I would be sad to see Oba go.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 6:17 am
Without a doubt i would have Oba Martins! I can’t remember last time i watched Owen wearing newcastle shirt…
Almost every quality player come to newcastle would injury for a very long peroid, excepte Oba! I can’t imagine why we have to release our injury-free leading goal-soccer to change to ALWAYS injury Owen….
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 3:10 am
Keeping in mind that no goals were scored in the last 5 home games of last season, not sure if I would keep either of them if there is any hesitation over their commitment to the cause. Oba would be the choice that would be best for the future, if he isn’t sucked in by the capital and all its so called glory.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 3:00 am
Sell both get Torres and Gudjohnsen
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 2:51 am
Without a doubt i would have Oba Martins! He is younger, Faster, Stronger, and Can score solo goals. Owen is an Injury crisis on legs! His heart isnt in the toon anyway, so i say he should go.
Sent in on: June 29th, 2007 at 1:47 am
I would keep Oba anyday. Younger (hopefully), faster, more committed (personal opinion), more all-round striker and worth more. All reasons Oba should stay over Owen. Both are good with their heads, however, Oba can jump probably twice as high. Oba may be tiny, but he can put himself around if needs be. He has the physical stature needed in the modern premiership game and, like Lua-Lua (Lomano-Tresor), he is impossible to read as a defender. He may not score as many goals a season as Owen might, but there is a price for exciting football. Oba is the typa of player thats gets fans on the edge of their seats when he picks up the ball. I, for one, cannot say the same about Owen, let alone remember the last time he touched the ball. Oba is also less injury prone. Playing up front alone for much of last season, in his first in a foreign league, with poor service, he managed to contribute 18? goals. You ask yourself the question, would Owen have done the same, without a partner. Oba scores solo goals (Alkmaar, Spurs etc) as well as strikers finishes (Alkmaar again, Watford). Granted, his finishing 1 on 1 could be improved, but so could Owens. If you give owen a second to think about what shot he will take, he will hit it at the keeper. He finishes on instinct. Basically, Oba can score the goals that Owen scores, as well as goals out of nothing. Not since France 98 against Argentina, have I seen Owen score a goal purely out of his own creation. The bottom line is, Owen relies on service. If we cannot provide it, he won’t score. Oba, o the other hand, can…..
KEEP OBA!!!!!!!!!!
