Newcastle return to action in the Premiership on Saturday Afternoon following the International break. The past few weeks haven’t been great for the Magpies losing 3 of the last 5 including a dismal 2-0 defeat at the Valley against struggling Charlton Athletic and being thrown out of the UEFA Cup by AZ Alkamaar.
The Magpies only victory in the past 5 games came at St James Park in the first leg against AZ when the Magpies really turned on the style. Glenn Roeder will be hoping Newcastle can turn on similar style again when Man City come to town at 3pm.

Nicky Butt returns from his one-match suspension while Stephen Carr (groin), Babayaro (hamstring) and Peter Ramage (hamstring) all return to the squad leaving Glenn Roeder with a near full squad to choose from with Owen, Ameobi and youngster Tim Krul the only players left on the treatment table.
For Man City, Micah Richards was stretchered off mid-week in Spain while playing for England in their Euro2008 qualifying match against Andorra and does not make the squad. Apart from that, there are no new injury worries for Stuart Pearce and he is expected to name a near-unchanged side from that of their last Premiership tie.

I really want Newcastle to show up in this game and go for the necks of Man City and I really wish I could sit here and predict a 4-0 victory. However, it probably won’t go that way. Games these days that Newcastle are expected to win, they lose so I’m going to say 2-1 City but I hope I’m proved wrong.

That’s true. We had some great times under Sir Bobby but that was never going to last, even if he hadn’t been sacked when he was, he would have left at the end of the season. I would hate for us to turn into a yo yo club finishing in Europe one year and then crashing out the next. It feels that way at the moment, but what we need is steady progress, on and off the field. We’re only one place off top half. Would anyone really complain about a top half finish considering our injuries?
Anything less would be disapointing, but certainly NOT the end of the world.
And considering every league placing yields something like £500,000 in prize money we really should get behind the team now, and leave all the criticism till our season is over!

It’s down to Roeder now to prove everyone wrong. He hold the key, although I don’t think he is the right man to take is foward like Sir Bobby once did. Only time will tell.

I don’t agree that playing players out of form is bad management. It’s impossible to get into form if you’re not playing! It’s not just about the next game, it’s about the game after that and the game after that. If you don’t play your out of form players you could end up without your best players for much of the season. I was merely making a point about the fact that anyone not in management cannot know everything that is going on. Don’t forget Roeder played Solano at right back in the first place. Yes Roeder deserves critisicm, contructive criticism. Criticism doesn’t mean Roeder wacking or booing. Constructive critisism is helpful, and not altogether negative. I’m sure Roeder is well aware of all your arguments, and I’m also sure he cares what the fans think, because that is a vital part of any football club. But Roeder was right to have a stab at the fans because criticism appears to have turned to something else, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

is a little flawed, don’t you think? As a paying customer I have every right to be critical of Roeder. The slightest of alterations (play Dyer in midfield and start both Milner and Sibi)against Manchester City could have effectivley gotten a more positive result. And for a man who clearly has his “favourites” (Duff, Dyer, Parker, Carr) and insists on playing them when they’re out of form, is bad management in every sense. I’d like to think I have a small amount of knowledge on football management as a certaintly don’t think that I do not ‘know anything’ on the subject, which seems to be what your implying.

The young lads were running on adrenaline. I’m not sure they could keep up that level and provide the consisteny we need.
As for proven arguments. I just see these as being too simplistic and not a real reflection of reality. They are not ‘proven’ at all. They are oppinions. People who claim to be right all the time, are merely being arrogant, and I don’t claim to be right, I just think Roeder deserves a fair chance. And he won’t have that until next season. You can’t get every game right in terms of tactics. Even the very best are done sometimes. It’s not just about tactics anyway. We’ve seen plenty of matches turned by the brilliance of one player, and it’s not a computer game. Roeder has no control over the players. He’s a manager not a puppet master. I agree Milner has turned games, but you must be deluded if you think he can do it every game. I’ve said in the past that our full back areas have been problematic for years, and I’m sure this will be sorted out. Sometimes good players play badly because of the players around them.
England play badly because they only have a few days to prepare and there’s no teamwork built up, no understanding between players. Like I said, it’s a team game.

Got to really agree with the majority of comments on this subject, Roeder nice guy (or that’s how he seems to come over) and got us out of a hole this time last season but was always a cheap option for FFS.
What concerns me is how tactically aware the top coaches are and how they repeatedly get the best out of their players something GR has repeatedly failed to do. Look at our worst performances this year and they have all come against mediocre opposition and how we have been outfought and out-thought (Birmingham, Sheff Utd, Man City et al) - this list is far too long for the supposed quality we have available. Injuries seem to be the continual excuse but it doesn’t wash with me, we are an established Premier side and should have no difficulty attracting the quality we need to cover the injury situation.
Transfers have not lived up to the hype coming from the club and I cannot see that changing during the off season so we are looking at more of the same, admittedly it’s hard to judge fairly being 12,000 miles away but comments from lads back home are generally reinforced by comments on this and other websites.
We should not have sacked SBR (FFS - “he would have got us relegated” - bull !!!) but he went so we move on - Souness (5th Choice !) - crap : GR (cheap option) - FFS let’s speculate, we missed out on Hitzfeld and look where he is now, in with a bloody good shout for the Champions League, van Gaal showed what a tactically aware coach can do - there is not an Englisman managing any one of the four current biggies so why the hell would it succeed for us - sorry Al being a Geordie is not going to guarantee us sucess
So it should be looked at now, get the right guy in and give him time to build for next year not four games in as seems to be the fatman’s want

“Nick” first u say that anybody who critisises roedor doesnt know anything about football management, then ppl disagree and give you certain facts and proving arguments off his incapabiltys, to which you agree with some of them and then publicy state you havent watch many games this season.
Hmmmmmmm.
As for roedor ive said it for ages he is tactically inept, his subs have always been terrible, when things need to change in a game it certainly will not be coming from his imagination.
Also as mentioned before , once the premidonas come back from injury (carr,babs,duff,parker) watch the teams results start to slide, at least the young lads give 110%

Define spending £300m? A more accurate picture would probably be Newcastle offering the land to developers who will make money out of it with NUFC plc providing some money maybe but not much. And part of the deal being the redevelopment of SJP. The money will come from elsewhere, business men and the like. Then money will be made out of these hotels, or by selling appartments. A large amount of the £300m will be made back and the rest will be made over a period of time. It’s a very exciting plan, but we obviously don’t know the details yet…

I agree with a lot of your comments. Man Utd don’t play the same way as we do at home. In fact they play more like we did in the first 23 minutes against Alkmaar or like we did against Spurs attacking from the off. We’ve been consistently inconsistent, and I just don’t think you can blame the manager for that. You can’t say we didn’t have enough creative players on the pitch to create goals, they just underperformed.
I’m inclined to agree with Dyer against Man City. I see him first and formost as a creative player threading passes to the strikers. He CAN play the striker role but usually he is much better against teams that defend high up like Sporting! Maybe in the Prem it’s not such a good idea because everyone knows him. They defend deep like Man City, but this also limits their attacking power so not a bad option. I remember the first game Bellamy was dropped. Arsenal defended high up the pitch because they were no longer worried about us getting in behind, and we had about one chance in the whole game. Having pacey players on the shoulders of defenders makes them defend deep, and so they are less likely to play an attacking game. But seeing as Man City were always likely to defend defend we should have put dyer on the wing with someone like Sib up front. Obviously Roeder’s main concern was to contain their attacking threat and then rely on pressure to break City rather than by getting in behind. You could argue that having two pacy strikers is maybe the more defensive option, but hey it nearly worked. Sib may not have been able to do much more. City defended pretty well.
Scotty and Butt. This is a tough one, I haven’t seen that many games this season but they never seem to control midfield for me. Parker always runs all over the place like a startled rabbit. And Butt is similar. They give in too easily to how the other team is playing and don’t hold position in the middle of the park. Parker was just seemingly doing nothing in Alkmaar except chasing shadows and not dictating play enough. Butt likewise. You can’t say they’re bad players it just hasn’t clicked. Sigh. I really think this is the crux of the team and the biggest problem. If we really struggle to dominate midfield it is a BIG problem. But then you have to ask about the other players. It’s hard to dominate midfield when there are no passes on. Do you blame Scotty and Nicky or the wide players/strikers. You could go on and on like this. Martins doesn’t offer himself enough to these two but he is learning and Owen and Ameobi will offer something different next season. Can you blame Roeder for playing an England international and a former England international? My answer would be no. There is more to it than these two underperfoming or not working as a pairing.
As for Sib, your guess is as good as mine. Long balls are not a Roeder strategy in my oppinion, they result from what I said above - not enough options. Still, at the end of the day you want your best players on the pitch.
As for Duff vs Milner. I would play both, but there’s obviously some kind of logic to him being left out. If you had Ronaldo or someone out of form would you put him back in ahead of milner to try and get him to regain his form? An in form Duff is better than Milner, we’ve all seen what he can do. Despite what milner has achieved this season. And I agree with Roeder on this one, sorry. You don’t get form and teamwork back when you don’t play. Despite whatever form they have been in, Duff is better than Milner.
Well Moore was injured, he’s out for a couple of weeks. Carr has been out so much he needs the match practice. He is first choice whether you like it or not! For the time being anyway…
I’m not totally disagreeing, but I firmly believe that this season was a write off ever since Owen was injured, that really mucked things up transfer wise. We’ll see next season the real Glenn Roeder. And good luck to him.

i think once ALL newcastle fans start realising that Roeder is a crap manager and the players are second rate we can eventualy start to improve as a club and as a team and move forward, alot of people do jump on this band wagon of hate but then again its the same people who jump on the band wagan of we can will a trophy i.e. uefa cup etc this year..

Im going to shock a few of you lads here but I think Roeder’s team selection was ok. My concern is his approach to games at home. You have a crowd of 50,000 and an opposition who are nervy and set out to defend. The atmosphere in the east stand, where I sit, becomes subdued and the (man citehs) of this world become more confident. Why, because our players are being cautious and passing the ball backwards. Do manure do this at home, do they heckers, they are after teams from the off. Dont believe me! Watch how many times Shay Given gets the ball in the first ten minutes from his defenders?

i have always been of the opinion that we as supporters should always stand by the club and players, even in the dark days of souness and ruud. however there comes a time, like after the woeful display we were treated to on saturday,for the fans who spend their hard earned cash to voice their concerns. the board need to realise that we have lost patience and deserve better. i hate to say it but i will find it hard to cheer at the next game and for the first time as a fan of the club, i am intending to chant against the club.

Nick football is all about opinions and I respect yours as much as anyone elses, however your comment about Roeders critics not knowing anything is completely wrong. I like to think I’ve been consistent on here he just isnt up to the task full stop, simply put Nick he just doesnt know what he’s doing, other correspondents on here have gone into that in some detail of which I agree.
For me though for him to come out and indirectly criticise the fans after the game yesterday indicates to me he just doesnt understand us at all. Apart from European away games I’ve seen most games this season, the guy is clueless,the number of times he marches in and out of his dugout reminds me of the grand old duke of york.
I’m not protecting players but it is obvious they think the same, how could u possibly leave Milner out against Alkmaar and Man City, he’s lost the players, he cant attract any, who would you sign for next season Roy Keane or Glen Roeder answers on a postcard please.
And Glen dont give me any more of this I’ve locked the players in the dressing room for an hour they think your a joke for god sakes go and go now whilst you have some dignity intact.

All i can say is shut up NICK you are talking rubbish, it is no good making excuses for Roeder at the end of the day on paper we are a top four side and we are not turning the results out for one reason only the manager has no tactical idea. And that was sumbed up with his negative subs yesterday. We the gordies are sick of watching shite and we deserve more. so why not start paying a world class manager the wages that a football player is on then get the best man for the job. i.e someone like luis van vaal.

I have to admit I disagree. Anybody who attended yesterday’s game has every right to be critical of Roeder. A list of reasons why:
1) Once again persisted in playing Dyer in a striker role. Dyer came back with a bang, however he has undoubtedly fizzled out in recent games. To be perfectly honest, he hasn’t had a good game in months. The reason why? He cannot play as a striker. He is influential playing in the middle of the park.
2) Played both Parker and Butt. Trying to accommodate two defensive midfielders doesn’t work at all. The gap in between our strikers and the central midfielders was huge, they gave rarely any support and lacked creativity and spark.
3) Left Out Sibi. To leave out the big man when your playing against both Distin and Dunne puzzles me. Especially when the team insists on playing long balls up to our two strikers who measure in around 5’7 – 5’9.
4) Played Duff instead of Milner. To leave out one of our, arguably, best players this season and to start a player who’s form has been unbelievably bad since he joined the club is a bad decision, but it is obvious now that Roeder has his ‘favourites’. He will not drop the likes of Carr, Duff, Parker, Dyer et al when they’re fully fit.
5) Substitutions. Onyewu on from Moore (73 mins). I’m not sure wherever Moore was injured or just tired (he didn’t appear to be either). Onyewu isn’t good enough; his positioning is just as bad as Boumsong’s (clearly got the wrong side of Mpenza for the goal) and his distribution looks poor. Milner on for Solano (76 mins). Too little too late, really. The change should have been twenty minutes earlier and Carr should have been sacrificed as Nobby was having a decent game. Take Carr off; drop Solano down to right back and Milner on his familiar right side.
6) Post Match Comments. ‘Manchester City cam here and they done a job on us’. I’m sorry, but they were very average at best, and although they did put nine/ten men behind the ball at times they could have easily been broken down if we the slightest amount of creativity in our midfield to support the strikers.
I respect your comments, Nick, just like I do with anyone who expresses on their opinion on here. But to say –

is truly mistaken. He got all the big decisions wrong yesterday and as a fan you have to be critical of that, there is no other option. I like Glenn, he’s a nice bloke, but yesterday was the day a lot of people questioned his ability and only time will tell if he is fit to run this club.

I think the Roeder critics will eat their words next season, and I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon just because of a string of poor performances. It’s clear that players will leave. And Roeder will bring in more players like Martins and Sib. Having fit again Owen and Ameobi will be crucial. This season was already a write off six months ago, and anybody who critisises Roeder really doesn’t know anything about football management. There are clearly big problems at the club, granted. But it takes time to put things right. How the hell do you expect the players to play well when the team is different everyweek and half the players are often out of form, out of fitness, and we are lacking any kind of teamwork. It takes time to build up teamwork, and as for form that is even harder to pick up when the team is playing badly. So what if the squad is now largely fit? Most of them have been out for long periods, and you can’t expect it all to come together straight away.
And as for Man City, they are a pretty big club fighting for their lives. Man U struggled to break down Blackburn at the weekend but they got their goal and then Blackburn collapsed, that could so easily have happened to Man City.

In fairness I’ve defended Roeder for awhile. They struggled with injuries through the whole season, ya fine they’ve made mistakes but everyone deserves a 2nd chance like but like you gotta wonder what he’s doing. There’s no excuses no, he’s got most of his players back. Yesterday Milner didn’t start, Dyer was out of position..etc. If we do get a new anyway good manager then I honestly see alot of the team going, they’re just not preforming like (but knowing our luck if they do leave they’ll preform brilliantly at another club.) The only one I can see who desereves to be wearing their shirt is Shay Given but he’s getting no protection and that most be so frustrating like. He could do nothing about the goal.
Anyway something has to be done and done fast or else players like Martins, Owen, Given..etc will walk.

It’s good to see the blinkers are coming of and everyone can now really see the coaching credentials and man management skills of Glen Roeder.
As I’ve said many times on these pages he is a honourable and decent bloke but not a good manager, not someone who is going to take us forward. To be honest Biffa sums it up on NUFC.COM when he says yesterday was finally the day when he lost the fans. His substitutions and abject tactics ARE an absolute joke.Fortunately for me I realised this a long time ago travelling around the country following them it has been clear to see. Shepherd is culpable for appointing him in the first place but for gods sake dont give him money in the summer as I said earlier this guy will take us down, it pains me to say it but we are not safe yet, I’ve seen many end of season collapses dont rule out another one here.
I agree with someones earlier comments lets invest money in a good coach my view has been a consitent one lets try a european coach my view would be Louis van Gaal somebody of that type who coached Roeder into the ground. Our coaching structure is awful Lee Clark in charge of the reserves sums up all that is wrong, but I forgot he is a Geordie that makes it alright.
Finally this current situation is a dangerous one for Freddie more so than at any time before, it is coinciding nicely with season ticket renewals dropping on supporters mats, Freddie will find I’m sure that patience is finally wearing thin and support will be in melt down if this situation doesnt change, see you all at Sheffield for another fun packed episode.

Well even the most patient Roeder supporter has to wonder what the hell he was thinking today. Granted once the players take the pitch it really is up to them even if they shouldn’t be on the field. Changes then fall back on the manager. To make the changes that he knew would mind boggle 50 odd thousand fans in the ground and the rest of us listening from all corners of the world really is just comical. He has favourites which doesn’t allow the best 11 to be on the pitch and he will be sacked before he resigns. Then what happens other than fat Freddy saying how many big names want to manage and play for the club. How he can sleep at night is beyond me. Gareth good to see that you are still going to make the effort to go to Sheffield, I now live in Vancouver, Canada and will be listening to it on the internet. I won’t give up on the team, but I certainly have started to not care who wears a black and white as long as they try hard and come play week in and week out. Winning isn’t everything, but effort and being organised is. With this present set up from top to bottom, it isn’t going to happen any time soon. Gutted.

If Roeder is still here next season, Newcastle will go down. We have to be carefull in the coming fixtures (hard games) - we might end up in a last minute relegation battle. We could end up passing Sunderland like two ships in the night come the last game of the season.
Freddy, Roeder and the back room staff have got to go. The players have lost faith in him. He’s not going to take the club forward. We’re not even going to remain an average side next season. Dont let Roeder waste money in the close/preseason. Invest the money we’d normally waste on a no hope player in a manager who can get the best from our current players.
Roeder was never the man to take Newcastle forward - most of the Geordie followers knew that. We hardly attacked today - because our tactics prevented us from looking dangerous. Then the punishing strike came in the final 3rd of the game which sealed the 3 points for City - typical !! Even under Souness we would have won that game !! City were pap !!
I dont blame the players for that - i blame the coaching staff’s lack of ability to get the best from players and the manager’s ‘Play it safe’ tactics.
