With regards to Paul Montgomery, I read that he had gone to CSKA London (AKA Chelski).

As for Peter Beardsley he does get paid by the club, I was told he no longer works with the youth players. I am sure Adam Sadler is classed a Youth Coach now rather than a specialist youth gk coach.

Magpies hit by Gennoe blow

NEWCASTLE United have suffered a massive blow with goalkeeping coach Terry Gennoe being forced to leave the club because of a long-standing back injury.

Sam Allardyce has reluctantly had to accept that the 54-year-old Gennoe cannot continue, and United are on the look-out for a new coach for Shay Given and Steve Harper.

Assistant academy director Adam Sadler is currently doing the job, but he does not want to specialise in goalkeeping and is more interested in general coaching.

Both Given and Harper have been quick to point out the part Gennoe has played in their success at St James’s Park, and are sorry that he has been forced to go.

The genial and popular coach has had two spells with United, leaving to join Kenny Dalglish at Celtic after Ruud Gullit arrived on Tyneside.

However, Glenn Roeder brought Gennoe back – much to the delight of Given and Harper.

And Harper told me today: “I know I speak for Shay when I say that we both owe at lot to Terry Gennoe.

“It has been quite an emotional time for the three of us when we realised he could not continue because of his back trouble which flared up again about a month ago.

“Terry has been so important to all the keepers we have had here, whenever he has been our coach, and he really is going to be a huge miss.

“We all wish him well in the future.”

When Allardyce took over as manager of United in May there was a lot of talk about just what would happen to the backroom staff, and indeed several new faces have arrived.

But the likes of Nigel Pearson, Lee Clark, Gennoe and Terry McDermott were all kept on after Big Sam assessed their value to the club.

However, now Gennoe has been forced to call it a day, and one name in the frame to replace him is Fred Barber, who was Allardyce’s goalkeeping coach at Bolton and is still at the Reebok Stadium.

Barber, who was born in Ferryhill, is a former Darlington keeper – and he was in goal for Peterborough the night they knocked United out of the League Cup back in 1991.
