I think assessing whether it works based on the positive experiences of people inside it is a bad way to go. Anyone who would go into something quite this strange, unexplained and secretive is obviously a bit nuts to begin with.

The weird and interesting thing about Scientology is that despite it being a load of bollocks that everyone knows was made up by L. Ron Hubbard as the result of some kind of bet, it does seem to work for a lot of people.
Norman Spinrad (very wacky, hard-edged SF writer) wrote a f****** brilliant novel about a Scientology-like cult which was exploring exactly this question ? is it real or isn't it? And if it works, should we care? It's called i The Process, and it's about a guy whose wife disappears into the cult, and he enters it to try and get her back, which means graduating through all the stages of their "process" while still keeping his sanity/not getting brainwashed.
Same writer also did a good short story about a confrontation between Scientologists and Hare Krishnas in Times Square.
Quite the irony.

Quite the irony. It's a comic piece. They're having a turf battle. The Scientologists try to do their intimidatory bit to chase the Hare Krishnas out, and the Hare Krishnas try to drown them out with chanting. Ends up in a riot.

Seems an ideal club for the rich and bored. Seems an ideal way to make a lot of money too. And get laid; one way or the other.

The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; the pessimist fears this is true. During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it. The first people totalitarians destroy or silence are men of ideas and free minds. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.

I know quite a few Scientologists living in SoCal. They are nutters... if they didn't have scientology they would have something else. Religion fills a hole for many people and America was founded by religious extremists... so there you are.
The thing that really bothers me about Scientology is their aggressive stance toward people who question them or their beliefs... that kind of intolerance is what makes them a bunch of dicks really. If it wasn't for that I would actually prefer them over Mormons, but TBH Mormons are usually more polite and willing to let you laugh at them.
