Buying From Our Premiership Rivals 2007: Liverpool
By Ben Letby On Wed 1 Aug 2007 |
When it comes to success, down at Liverpool they are experts. Many people have come to see them as the weakest member of the top four but Liverpool fans over the last 50 years would disagree with that completely. England’s biggest clubs can only look in awe at the 13 league titles, seven FA Cups, five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three Super Cups that have found their way into the Anfield trophy cabinet since 1960. But I’m not here to blow another club’s trumpet, they do enough of that for themselves, what could we get from Liverpool, realistically, to improve results for Newcastle United?
This is a tough one. Rafael Benitez buys each player because that is the player he wants. Players generally only leave Liverpool if they fail to adapt to life in England or they are nearing the end of their career. Liverpool just do not sell to other Premiership clubs. So this article will have to be based purely on the pretension that they do.
The quality of some of the playing staff at Liverpool is immense. For a start, local boys Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are two of the best players of their position in the world and importantly, they both love their club. Having two players like that around is inspirational for both staff and squad members and only serves to strengthen the foundations Benitez and his team are trying to build. However, some of their team-mates aren’t quite as convincing. Jermaine Pennant wasn’t all that convincing at Birmingham but for some reason Benitez saw fit to splash out nearly seven million for his services. At 24 years old, Pennant isn’t a spring chicken anymore and in my opinion he has failed to live up to the potential that saw Arsenal sign him in 1999. There are several wingers I’d rather see at St. James Park and one of them is James Milner, who is already here. Ãlvaro Arbeloa and Gabriel Paletta are other examples of players at Liverpool that just aren’t good enough, and it remains a mystery as to why Rafa decided Andriy Voronin can help him win the league. The former Bayer Leverkeusen striker was followed into Anfield by Spain international Fernando Torres - but you only have to look back to Fernando Morientes to see the risk that is being taken there.

So what can they offer us? Newcastle have lacked a top-class centre half since Jonathan Woodgate left for Real Madrid three years ago and for me Sami Hyypia could finally fill the void left by the Middlesbrough man. No doubt he could do a very good job for a couple of seasons and he would be a no-risk signing. And, despite being in the latter stages of his career, he has proved he can still cut it at the top level, as his partnership with Jamie Carragher helped contribute to a record-breaking run of clean sheets just two years ago.
Currently, there is not an awful lot of height in the Newcastle side, and, at 6’4, Hyypia would certainly bring a greater aerial presence to the defence and pose a threat when going forward for set plays. Newcastle have conceded too many goals from set pieces and balls into the box in recent times, and having someone of Hyypia’s stature around would surely help cut that out.
John Arne Riise is a name we have been linked with this summer. I don’t know why he would leave and I don’t think he will, but the Norwegian is a fantastic player who can do a fine job at full-back and in midfield. He can run with the ball effectively, he can cross well and he can shoot brilliantly – but this is why he is a firm favourite with the Anfield faithful. The left back slot has long been a problem position for Newcastle, and, with Celestine Babayaro currently receiving treatment in Germany for a hamstring injury, it is possible that United could go into their first game of the season without a recognised left back.
Riise joined Liverpool from AS Monaco in 2001 and now may find his position at the club under threat with the arrival of Argentinean youngster Emiliano Insua and the return from injury of Brazilian Fabio Aurellio. This could allow clubs such as Newcastle to nip in.
In the current transfer market, you would have to pay through the roof to get a younger player of Hyypia’s standard, but a younger player would naturally not bring the experience and know-how of the Liverpool man and experience is absolutely what Newcastle need at the back. You can’t imagine Liverpool would demand a huge fee for him and he is definitely a realistic target for the persuasive powers of proven rejuvenator Sam Allardyce.
Who would you sign from Liverpool? Do you think Liverpool have a realistic chance of winning the league title in the coming season? Have you say.

Add to those, is Harry Kewell still at Liverpool ? I haven’t read the article all the way through, so excuse me if he gets mentioned. He’s usually been over-played and has under-performed - or been injured - but used to be great years ago and Sam has been excellent in the past at turning player’s careers around even when they’re 30 or so.
Another thing: I can’t believe that a lot of fans.are still so pessimistic (having just read a few posts on blogonthetyne). Okay, we do need defensive reinforcements quickly, of course, but we not only have a better manager now but also a new board -–something fans have been longing for for years. If we can get the players we want without spending much then I’ll personally be very happy that we haven’t spent the kind of megabucks that others currently are. And, in an odd kinda way, we might also have made a new signing in Luque if he can continue his new-found form and confidence,

Generally, I think the main problem in buying from Liverpool is that we would only be able to attract players from them who don’t have a chance of making the LFC 1st team.
These players would therefor be no better than what we have now, really.

Hi All
As a Liverpool fan this is an Interesting read.
To be fair lads, you’d be buying a dead horse in Sami Hyypia.
To say he’s knackered is an understatement.
While he was never the fastest, those few yards of pace have completely gone.
He’s still a legend and will do well as back up for a tea,.
He would not be quick enough for a complete season.
Riise is not going anywhere, every summer this crops up, but he’s loved by the fans and is a dedicated player.
There is no way we can let him go.
And one last call ..
As for For Voronin ….watch this space !!

“Arbeloa simply not good enough”
He made his debut out of position at left back, away to Barcelona in the Champs league 2nd phase at the Nou Camp, and had to mark Lionel Messi. He marked him out of the game.
To prove it was no fluke, he did it again at Anfield in the 2nd leg for good measure.
The guy maybe not a household name or even a fashionable player, but he’s yet to have a stinker for Liverpool.
For £2m, more bargains like that please Rafa

Jay, as a fellow Liverpool supporter, I’m sorry to have to point this out, but you were a trifle quick off the mark: the writer has noted that we’ve won 13 titles SINCE 1960, not overall.
Apart from that, not a bad article, but I share LFC05’s views, most notably over Pennant and Voronin.

I want Riise…overpay for him if you have to…I want and we NEEEED Riise. Peter Crouch is a fine player in the Prem…but we do not need him currently. We have NO left back. Unless you count the 60 percent or the time injured Babayaro.

Hello mate. There’s a mistake in your honours roll for Liverpool. We’ve actually won 18 league titles, not 13.
Best of luck for next season, by the way.

LFC won’t sell to other Premiership teams? Yer ‘aving a larf! What about Bellamy to West Ham? And Kirkland to Wigan? They’re not exactly “rivals”, but….
Anyway, I’ve got a soft spot for Newcastle and wish you all the best for the coming season (except when you play LFC, of course!). But I think you’re dreaming if you think that Rafa will sell Hyypia or Riise and especially not Crouch to you. They are all still a big part of his plans.
You shouldn’t be too hasty to dismiss Voronin and Torres, though. And to compare the two Fernando’s … well, they’re as different as chalk and cheese! The new boys will do very well this season, you’ll see.

hyypia and riise would both be great signings, both also seem realistic with the emergence of daniel agger and the persistent chase of gabriel heinze, but a player that i have admired for a while is PETER CROUCH. big pete seems to have been pushed down the pecking order since the arrival of torres, and the good form of voronin and i think pete, although his technique is far from textbook, has shown time after time that he can get goals week in week out, against any opposition, and i feel he is exactly the type of striker we need a newcastle- although defenders still remain our main priority

As a liverpool fan i will give you my thoughts on some the players you have mentioned.
Pennant had a difficult start to his carreer and seemed a bit too eager to impress while looking a bit shellshocked from moving up to this level. He was making lots of bad decisions and not being effective enough. But since the new year he has been much better and was acctually our best player in the first half of the CL final. He has continued to improve his performances over time and from what i saw from him at the end of the season and now in pre-season i think he can acctually make it as a regular first teamer if he keeps this level of performance up and also improves part of his game. I think he will definately be given a chance to prove himself this season so i can’t see him going anywhere. Also, i remember people kept on quoting the £7million figure for Crouch and now look where he is so i don’t think you can critize the club for the fee as he has not had long enough at the club to be judged on it.
Arbeloa….i think is a decent squad player to have. He is versitile and capable of playing anywhere in defence but maybe has not settled fully into our defensive system yet so i think he will improve in future too. I think he will stay until at least January and if he does look out of depth then i reckon he will be shipped out then and not this summer.
Paletta…. i am not sure he will make it. He is very aggressive and dives into challenges a lot which leaves him out of posistion and a hole in the defence. He is not intelligent on the ball at all and never will be. Saying that though he is only 21 so he still has time but i doubt he will get much expierence in side this year. He will most likely be sold to a spanish or italian team or sent out on loan for the season for playing time.
Voronin is not just a bench warmer at Liverpool, let me say. He has been our best performer in our pre-season games and looks a smart player. For comparisons sake for me he is like Kuyt with more ability on the ball, a much better passer and more clinical finisher so i think people will be suprised by him this season considering we got him for nothing.
Torres looks a level above everybody on the pitch when he has played so far IMO. Pace, strength, skill, movement - he has the lot. Although he has had some chances which he missed when he should have score i am sure he will improve in this department once the league starts. He will score loads this season.
Hyypia is a tough one to call. I think he could still have one decent season in him at Liverpool but whether he will stay or not im not sure. Ideally i think Rafa would probably like to ship him out and bring someone younger in, but whether it would be worth doing it now when he could stay and be content knowing he is second choice to Agger and Carragher which im sure he is fine with. It all depends on whether Rafa wants to bring in another centre-back to replace him this season or leave it and let him leave on a free next summer.
Riise…i think will stay. He can play left-back or left-midfield so he gives us more options and has a cracking left foot and has been in excellent form in all the pre-season games. If someone bids big money for him though he might go if we bring someone in and as we have Aurielo too who is a very classy player, the problem is that he is more often than not injured! Sounds familar to another suituation i can think of
There ya have it… im off to watch Die Hard 4 now
