League Cup Rnd 3: NUFC Vs Norwich City
Newcastle have been handed a home match against Norwich City
in the 3rd round of the League Cup after they beat Bristol Rovers
1-0 at home. This is the first time we have faced
the Canaries in the competition with our only other Cup match coming
in the FA Cup back in 1963 at Carrow Road when they dumped us out
in the 4th round with a crushing 5-0 win.
Lets hope they don't have such luck on the week commencing 25th of
October...
There is no chance of a Graeme Souness reunion with his former
club Blackburn Rovers who lost 7-6 on pens to Bournemouth at Ewood
Park after a 3-3 draw in normal time. No wonder he was quick to leave
that lot. That's a shocking result.
The Toon of course aren't averse to shocking results in Cup competitions
themselves and Norwich won't be an easy task as we found out in the
2-2 draw at St. James' a few weeks back. A result which proved to
be Sir Bobby's last match at the Old Gallowgate as boss. However,
having won the League Cup with Blackburn and with a mandate to win
that damn elusive trophy I can't see our new man taking this competition
lightly. If we turn up we should progress.
P.S I say that every Season. Fingers XX
Earlier we wrote:
Due to European participation the likes of Newcastle weren't
permitted to take part in round 2 of the League Cup like other Premiership
sides which started last night and ends this evening with the draw
for the 3rd round taking place after the final games have ended. With
the Toon in the hat.
Sadly there is no chance of a 136th Tyne-Wear Derby after the Mackems
were beaten on penalties to Crewe last night (sniggers childishly)
with former Toon defender Steven Caldwell guilty of missing one of
their pens (good lad).
There is no chance of being dumped out, like last Season, by Saturday's
visitors to St. James' Park West Bromwich Albion either after Gary
megson's men were sent packing by Division 2 side Colchester, creating
the biggest shock of the night.
Who will we get? I'll have an early wager on the Smoggies at St. James'
Park.
We'll get em' in the next round man...
No News Is Good News - For Us!
By
Craig Hope
What is this? Two days in a row now without any major event
at SJP! No player revolt, night club brawl, training ground spat or
even your run of the mill manager - board fall out! The only news
to circulate is some rubbish about Bellamy having a go at Souness
following his decision to play him in midfield at the weekend. How
ironic that exactly the same quotes that were used to produce articles
yesterday highlighting Bellamy's willingness to play midfield have
been used today to suggest a fall out with his boss.
Creating a different story out of yesterday's news is not good journalism.
For the supporters however, although we have less to read about, it
can only mean good things that at last our squad have woke up, went
to training and went home again without any major incident. Good work
Graeme! Keep their mouths shut and their heads down. Keep them working
hard and lets hope this mini revival we are experiencing gathers yet
more momentum at home to WBA on Saturday.

Media's 'Love' Affair With The Toon Continues...
Following yesterday's revelations from Craig Bellamy regarding
his role on the right-flank which he claimed he is happy to play there
if and when Souness needs him to do a job, like at St. Mary's on Sunday,
a posse of today's newspapers and websites have spun his comments
to make it look as if he's having another whinge and is unhappy. This
comes as no surprise to Newcastle-Online, after all the media in general
love to grind their axe on our club badge and have done for years,
but over the past few days it's getting absurd.
This from the the Mirror's match report of our brilliant 2-1 win over
Saints:
"Take Nicky Butt out of the Manchester United line-up and
he looks average, Lee Bowyer has been disappointing for more than
a year, and the strike force will be causing equal concern."
And...
"Shearer and Patrick Kluivert started up front together for the
first time yesterday - and it should be the last time as well. They
do not work well together and the partnership seems to have little
future."
And finally...
"But Kluivert was desperately poor yesterday as he struggled
to get into the game and was substituted in the 67th minute. Kluivert
is on £67,000-a-week so that made it £1,000 for every minute he was
on the pitch. That really has to be the biggest rip-off in the Premiership.
What's more, he has signed a three-year deal at St James' Park - Newcastle
chairman Shepherd showed he really does have more money than sense
when he signed a striker well past his sell-by date."
One word sums up these lot: It begins with T and
ends with an S!

Chops Cup-Tied
We reported yesterday that Michael Chopra, currently on loan
at Barnsley, would not play in their League Cup tie last night against
Manchester City. He did and has today extended his loan spell, which
was due to end on Saturday, to another month at Oakwell. Indeed he
will not play any further part in the League cup this Season after
his side were thrashed 7-1 at the City of Manchester Stadium. |
