Viana Wants SJP Return

Viana quotes regarding our UEFA Cup match with Sporting Lisbon:

"I told my best friend on Monday that this would happen and he just laughed.

"But I had a strange feeling United and Sporting would be in the same group. It's an amazing draw and I don't want to miss out. I know what the two clubs agreed in August but that was under Sir Bobby Robson and I know he didn't want me to be involved.

"There is now a different coach at the club and perhaps Mr Souness will allow me to play. I will be appealing to him and to the club to let me play against Newcastle.

"Lomana Lualua was allowed to play for Portsmouth when he found himself in the same situation so I am hoping I will be given that opportunity too. It's such an important match for me after what happened last season."

"This is the game everyone will be looking forward to and I am no different. It would be a devastating blow for me if all of my team mates were able to travel to Newcastle and I was left at home. I have so many happy memories there and I want to do myself justice in front of the United fans."

Souness Raids Blackburn

Graeme Souness has appointed goalkeeping coach Roy Tunks from former club Blackburn Rovers. Tunks 53, will replace Simon Smith as United's coach responsible for getting the best out of Shay Given and Steve Harper. The former Preston, Wigan, York and Rotherham man was appointed as Blackburn's goalkeeping coach back in 1997 by Roy Hodgson to replace Terry Gennoe who, ironically ended up at Newcastle as part of Kenny Dalglish's backroom staff. Both Tim Flowers and Brad Friedel speak highly of him and Tunks will join up with Dean Saunders, Alan Murray and Phil Boersma to complete the Ewood raid. Will Souness go back to his former club in January?
