Match Report: Birmingham 2-2 NUFC

Graeme Souness' 100% winning run came to an end at St. Andrews this afternoon as Newcastle come from 2-1 down, despite being 1-0 up, to draw the game 2-2 thanks to goals from Jermaine Jenas, his first of the season, and a spectacular scissor kick goal from Nicky Butt for his first ever Toon goal. The point moves us up into 6th in the table. Dwight Yorke and Matthew Upson grabbed Birmingham City's goals.

Is This Why Bernard Has Been Playing Poor?

It appears our under performing left-back has been nursing a slight injury for the past month now. Quotes from Bernard:

"I need to get the problem sorted because it has been troubling me for months now.

"I haven't been 100 per cent for a while, but I'm seeing the doctor who used to work with the French squad so hopefully he can help me.

"I have been having treatment here as well, but I am returning to France during the international break so they will have a look at the problem over there as well."

That and his contractual problems...

We Are GIVEN Too Many Goals Away

By Craig Hope

Eight games into the season and we have conceded thirteen goals with just one clean sheet to show for our efforts. That clean sheet came against Blackburn in our 3-0 victory – my argument is that Newcastle United only keep a clean sheet if the opposition do not look like scoring. Blackburn had nothing going forward and never threatened our goal with any real purpose. [More +]

Souness & Robbie Savage Spat

According to today's Telegraph, Toon boss Graeme Souness and Birmingham midfielder Robbie Savage had a war of words in the tunnel after Sunday's 2-2 draw at St. Andrews. Make of it what you will:

Newcastle United's 2-2 draw with Birmingham City at St Andrews on Sunday ended with the visiting manager, Graeme Souness, trading insults in the tunnel with the hosts' midfielder, Robbie Savage.

It began when Souness overheard Savage chuntering on about what a "shit team Newcastle are". Souness interrupted Savage with the words: "Hey, Robbie, you would know all about shit teams."

Never one to shy away from a debate, the Welshman responded: "You were only fifth-choice for the Newcastle job." The verbal ping-pong intensified. Souness replied sarcastically: "Oh, yeah, Robbie you are such a good player." Savage, formerly of Leicester City and Crewe Alexandra, countered: "I'm a better player than you were."

Drawing on the memory of three European Cups with Liverpool, Souness retorted: "You have the trophies and medals to back that up, do you Robbie? Sorry, what clubs have you played for? Yeah, thinking about it Robbie, you really are a top player."

The argument continued into Birmingham's dressing room before peace prevailed.
